Huge rats were seen stealing food inside the penguin enclosure at a zoo in Malaysia.

Li Junhao saw the rodents when he visited the Zoo Negara in Selangor together with his family in August 10.

Seven adult rats could be seen feasting on the food bowls intended for penguins.

The shocked tourist said that at first sight, he thought that it was a penguin baby eating but when it moved a little closer he found it was rats.

He said: "I am very disappointed with the management of the zoo. I hope the management will look into this carefully instead of turning a blind eye."

Li added that the aquarium where the penguins are located is one of the best spots in the zoo before.

He said: " It turned out ghastly these days. The water does not fully refill and is dirty."

The Zoo Negara is managed by a non-governmental organisation known as the Malaysian Zoological Society and oversees more than 450 species of animals.

They apologised for the incident. The group said in a statement: "First and foremost, on behalf of Zoo Negara Malaysia, we would like to apologise for the video that went viral.

''For your information, we have set traps and closed the small holes that are the gateways of the rats.

"We assure you that your feedback has given us the opportunity to improve our service delivery further. Again, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention."
