During his visit to Shenzhen to mark 40 years since it became a special economic zone, Chinese President Xi Jinping designated the city as the engine for his vision to turn southern China into an economic powerhouse. Xi also made no mention of Hong Kong's past role as a catalyst to help Shenzhen develop into what it is today. Some Hong Kong lawmakers say Xi’s remarks reflect how the city is losing its competitive edge to its neighbour to the north.
