"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger.
During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers & became a major international hit for Roberta Flack
in 1972, winning Recording Academy / GRAMMYs
Awards for Record of the Year & Song of the Year. Billboard
ranked it as the No1 Hot 100 single of the year.
There are two differing accounts of the origin of the song. MacColl said that he wrote the song for Seeger after she asked him to pen a song for a play she was in. He wrote the song & taught it to Seeger over the telephone. Seeger said that MacColl, with whom she had begun an affair, used to send her tapes to listen to while they were apart & that the song was on one of them.
MacColl made no secret of the fact that he disliked all of the cover versions of the song. His daughter-in-law wrote: "He hated all of them. He had a special section in his record collection for them, entitled 'The Chamber of Horrors'. He said that the Elvis version was like Romeo at the bottom of the Post Office Tower singing up to Juliet. And the other versions, he thought, were travesties: bludgeoning, histrionic & lacking in grace."
The song was played as the wake-up music on flight day 9 to the astronauts aboard Apollo 17, on their last day (Dec 15, 1972) before returning to earth, thus ending the last manned explorations of the Moon. The use of the song was most likely a reference to the "face" of the moon below the spacecraft.
The series Glee featured a cover version of the song. Sung by Naya Rivera, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Lea Michele.
Other versions: James Blake, ELVIS PRESLEY, George Michael, Céline Dion, Josh Groban, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Matt Cardle, Johnny Cash, Luke Evans, Gordon Lightfoot, Miley Cyrus, Shirley Bassey, Engelbert Humperdinck, Richard Marx, Nana Mouskouri, Harry Belafonte, Stereophonics, Lauryn Hill, Birdy, LeAnn Rimes
Lyrics
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the endless skies my love
The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move through my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command my love
The first time ever I lay with you
And felt your heart so close to mine
The first time ever I saw your face
Your face [3x]
