Meet Clay Hutson

Clay Hutson is an entrepreneur and business leader in the construction industry based out of Nashville, Tennessee. He focuses primarily on building homes, turning what originally began as a side job during a lull in his primary job into his full-time job in 2020.

Clay’s interest in construction is due to his interest in home-flipping, finding it satisfying to source houses and give them the necessary TLC for a new family to move in. He takes joy in renovating these old homes, adding some modern touches to the otherwise original beauty, but Clay Hutson loves nothing more than seeing a family visit their finished home for the first time. Construction is much different than a standard 9-to-5 office job, but Clay realizes that many of the tenets of management are otherwise the same. Being a construction manager, Clay hires the best workers he can find to get the job done and is able to give them leeway to finish their work without delay as a result.

As a leader, Clay Hutson has determined that he won’t give someone he hires a job that he wouldn’t do himself. As a part of the construction industry, it’s not uncommon for leaders to pitch in and help get the work done. The mindset behind this is that there are no dirty jobs, and Clay feels that leading by example is vital to establishing good morale for his team. He says the experience is akin to basketball: the effort put into the work will bounce back just as much. It’s this philosophy that encourages Clay to have a good relationship with his team.

Clay Hutson makes sure to treat all his fellow workers with respect and kindness, driving him away from micromanaging others. Though he likes to involve himself in hands-on construction jobs, Clay trusts his team to do their jobs well. He knows that teams run better when experienced professionals are left to complete their jobs rather than supervised by people not at the same skill level. Though he doesn’t micromanage, he is always there for his team and is usually both the first on-site in the morning and the last to leave the site in the evening.

With his experiences in entrepreneurship, leadership, management, and business, Clay Hutson hopes to instill a sense of security in those who follow the same methods that he does. He is proud of his work as both a manager and a leader, and wishes to inspire other leaders to lead their own successful operations.
