00:13I was very tired when I reached Nyabugogo,
00:16I was feeling dizzy
00:18I would think I am in another country
00:22I couldn’t understand what was going on!
00:31I am Ntakirutimana Anastase,
00:34I was born in Karongi district,
00:37in Gishyita sector
00:39I am the elder in a family of 5
00:41but there are others from the first wife
00:48my father married 2 wives,
00:51but one died
00:52and my dad brought another one,
00:54so I am the elder to the second wife, and we are five children
00:59excluding the children from the first wife,
01:01and I don't know the first dad's wife
01:03I grew up seeing my siblings
01:07and things were not easy for us
01:09I grew up in a poor family,
01:11we were living in hard conditions
01:14even eating was not easy
01:19we were living in tough conditions for real
01:24I even quitted the school
01:28because of the life, we were living in
01:31after growing up and find we are poor
01:35we could only eat when our parents beg for food
01:42at 13 years, I used to go with mum to beg different people
01:45like all those you see begging on the street
01:51that's how our life was at that moment
01:59and I would go to school after begging with my mum
02:05since we used to live in hard conditions for a long period
02:10when I was 15 years I stopped studying,
02:14my young brothers were going to school starving
02:19I was in primary six at that time
02:21so I had to stop studying and help them
02:28and find jobs like helping construction workers,
02:31making bricks at 15 years.
02:39I was trying to get a living
02:42and take responsibilities for my young brothers
02:45that's when I decided to stop studying.
02:49that's what I have been through until I was 18 years,
02:54at the age of 18 years
02:57I said,
03:01I worked so hard, but still nothing is changing
03:08we used to spend two days without eating
03:13and that was a big problem for me
03:16and I thought if I can go to steal maybe we can eat,
03:21it wasn't how I wanted things to be,
03:26I had pity for my siblings
03:29I couldn't really sleep seeing my brother there
03:33feeling weak due to hunger and I decided to steal things like sweet potatoes
03:42and lie them that I bought them
03:48I couldn’t tell them that I stole them, they would be mad at me,
03:52so I had to lie to them
03:55I would tell them that I have worked
03:58and I bought sweet potatoes,
03:59I would bring a few, so they don't suspect me
04:02I would steal plantains and divide them into pieces
04:08so they don't find out that I have stolen it!
04:11if I brought it all they would ask me where I got it.
04:15I lived that life like a year
04:20and I would bring money if I get a gig so we can eat
04:24or go to steal if I don’t get that gig
04:30I used to carry things for different people like sorghum,
04:33sweet potatoes, cassava at the market
04:35and they would pay me like 100 Rwf
04:38or 200 Rwf
04:40and I would end the day with 700 or 1,000 Rwf
04:46if that doesn’t happen I had to go steal
04:50and sometimes I would go steal at night
04:53and at home, they would think I am playing with others
04:59while I am stealing sweet potatoes
05:04or cassava, that we can eat 2 times and lie to them
05:10that I bought them
05:13I kept doing that, but I was caught
05:16and it was a very huge problem
05:18I was beaten so hard at our village
05:22in front of everyone
05:25and everyone found out that I was a thief!
05:29but I continued to steal
05:31because they did not resolve the issue
05:35which was pushing me to steal
05:37they were not going to provide us what to eat
05:42so I continued to steal
05:46and I turned into a bad thief,
05:54to the extent where I would meet other guys
05:58and go together
06:08and we would steal a whole sack of cassava or plantains
06:10and we go sell them
06:11I was a bad thief at that time
06:16I was not scared anymore
06:17it all started with the pity I had for my siblings
06:21and ended up being a real thief
06:23where I would need a pant, and decide to steal it,
06:28All I could do was stealing, I couldn’t agree to work
06:32that what I have been through from 15-18 years.
06:46One day I stole a bicycle,
06:47that's one thing which stopped me from stealing,
06:51I was beaten, where I spent a week unable to sit properly
06:55I was a bad thief
06:57I was beaten at the market
07:00I think you know how they beat a thief
07:03to the extent, I realized that I am doing wrong
07:08that's when I changed and be a good boy,
07:12and I started to find jobs at 18,
07:17I would ask for a job and get it without
07:20judging me that I am young,
07:23and I would earn 700-1,000 Rwf
07:26others were earning 1,500 Rwf,
07:28and I was earning 700 or 1,000 Rwf
07:31even in cultivating, I would earn 500 Rwf
07:35while others were earning 800 Rwf
07:38I had changed, I would agree to be paid less
07:41I would even work for 300, but not going back in thieve's life
07:45but it kept not going well, and I decided to go to Kigali,
07:48I was thinking if I go to Kigali, life will change
07:53so I can help my young brothers
07:55to study and send them money
07:58and also live a good life.
08:05When I arrived in Kigali,
08:10things were not easy for me,
08:12I came to Kigali by myself
08:16thinking that I will seek for a job and get it immediately
08:19I thought it was very easy, and Kigali is like paradise
08:23and everyone is rich, no poor people who live in Kigali!
08:28so I took a bus with little money I had
08:35I was so tired after arriving at Nyabugogo
08:37I was even feeling dizzy
08:39and when I was looking at people around,
08:41I would find myself, I am in another country,
08:44I couldn’t understand what was happening for real
08:49I was scared of cars,
08:52I was born in a rural area where it is hard to see cars
08:59even going into Kigali, I was afraid
09:04and each car I would see, I thought it was going to hit me
09:13so I had to go hide to that building in Nyabugogo
09:18which is in the center
09:22so I was hiding at a canteen there
09:26like 5 hours
09:29without understanding what is happening
09:32and staring at people, asking myself if I can ask them for a job
09:36or he is a thief as I used to hear there are so
09:38many thieves at Nyabugogo!
09:39I only had a small envelope with few clothes
09:44I don’t know how I can say, but it wasn’t easy!
09:50I sat there from 1pm,
09:54until 5pm
09:57and I was thinking if I ask someone a job,
10:00he will go with me and steal my things
10:03even though I had nothing for real
10:07I only had few clothes with me
10:12I kept sitting there,
10:14for 5 hours
10:19I started asking myself where am I going to sleep?
10:24I thank God every time I remember this
10:27I never thought where to sleep that whole time
10:29I spend sitting there.
