Cara al Sol (English: Facing the Sun) is the anthem of the Falange Española de las JONS. The lyrics were written in December 1935 and are usually credited to the leader of the Falange, José Antonio Primo de Rivera.
The Falangists needed a stirring song of their own to counter the popular appeal of El Himno de Riego (the official anthem of the Second Spanish Republic) and A las Barricadas (a very popular Anarchist song).
(Letra Cancion)
Cara al sol con la camisa nueva
Que tú bordaste en rojo ayer,
Me hallará la muerte si me lleva
Y no te vuelvo a ver.
Arriba escuadras a vencer
Que en España empieza a amanecer
España, una! España, grande! España, libre!
Arriba España!
(English Lyrics)
Facing sunward proudly with my new shirt
That you embroidered in red
That's how death will take me
And I won't see you again
I will gather around my comrades
Who, as faithful warriors guard the heavens
With an impassive face
That represents our toil
And if I perish I'll know
That I'll return to my place
We will carry the banner of victory
At a greater step towards peace
And when you will lay five roses
In my yoke and arrows
Spring will laugh once again
Something yearned for by land and sea
Onwards squads to victory
For a new day dawns upon Spain
Spain, one (united)! Spain, great! Spain, free!
Onward (arise) Spain!
