Ashtavinayak (अष्टविनायक) literally means "eight Ganeshas" in Sanskrit. The Ashtavinayak yatra or pilgrimage covers the eight ancient holy temples of Ganesh which are situated around Pune. Each of these temples has its own individual legend and history, as distinct from each other as the murtis in each temple.

Moregaon and the temple of Mayureshwar are steeped in legend
Legend has it that Ganesha was born to Parvati in the Treta Yuga, in the caves of a place called Lenyadri. Ganesha took the form of a fair Mayureshwar with six arms, riding a peacock, in order to vanquish Sindhu, who was terrorising the land.
