Seals on shore 2021

Seals are generally slippery and quite large. Their bodies are well adapted to their aquatic habitats, where they spend most of their life. As hands, the feet are large and shaped like fins, and the body is narrowed backwards. The speed seal, namely Arctocephalus galapagoensis, weighs about 30 kg for its adult size and is 1.2 meters long. The largest seal, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), has a maximum length of up to 4 meters and a weight of 2200 kg.

All types of seals are carnivores that eat fish, squid and other marine animals. The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is possibly the largest predator of all seal types, eating a wide variety of animals from krill, penguins to other seals.
