This student pilot was about to land at his home runway when he suddenly lost his engine. Panicked, he contacted the tower to tell them his situation. The man saw a field below him and decided to land the plane there. He carefully made an emergency landing and touched down on the field. By doing this, he saved his life and those who lived in the neighborhood near the field.

00:00 Before you watch the actual event unfold, I wanted to give you some context.
00:05 You see, I'm a student pilot and I wanted to make this video so other student pilots could perhaps ask their instructor questions around this that perhaps could help them in the same situation.
00:16 For me, I'm very fortunate. I've spent a copious amount of time with my instructor talking about emergency procedures.
00:23 Probably will never happen, but if it did, muscle memory must kick in.
00:28 Could I have done things better? Well, I'll debrief this at the end and the short answer is absolutely.
00:35 We're always staying a student, but did I land and did I live? Yeah, I'll take that as a win as well.
00:42 I've always wanted to be a pilot since I was a kid and about seven months ago I decided to start the journey because I wanted to do it before I turned 50 years old.
00:52 And this was actually the last part of that journey. It is called my long cross country and it was solo.
00:59 Now I did it with my instructor before and basically it was about 180 miles or so round trip with stopping two different airports and coming home.
01:10 And, you know, when I was coming back before the film started, because I was really only filming my landings to debrief with my instructor later.
01:20 I started getting a rough engine, so I'm around 2200 feet, 10 miles or so, 11 miles from the runway at my home airport and started running rough.
01:32 So obviously I started thinking, OK, carb ice, you know, so I pulled my carpeet and it got better and I thought, OK, everything's good.
01:41 There's still fuel in the tank. Everything seems good.
01:44 But I went ahead and hit record just in case it happened again so I could show him what the motor was doing.
01:49 And, well, you can see what happens next.
01:54 Concord Tower, Cessna 117, take us here about nine miles to the southeast requesting full stop. Have hotel.
