The metropolitan settlement is empty and unappealing, drenched in the August heat. Alenka, a twelve-year-old girl, is depressed. Her pals are still on holiday, her mother is at work, and Alenka is on her own for the entire day. She invents the role of a charming partner of an actress who lives in the neighborhood in order to minimize her long wait. He also encounters a young soldier from the balcony across the street. Mr. Tarab, a blind man who goes to the hospital and entrusts her to the care of his wolfhound, spends his only pleasant moments with him. Alenka's mother has a partner who is entirely uninterested in her daughter. She has no one she can trust or who can please her, so she accepts Mr. Taraba's invitation to celebrate her discharge from the hospital. Alenka meets the soldier Pavel and leads him to the station the next day, where she hopes for the first emotional awakening when Pavlov's girl appears. Alenka is once again left alone. He finds a wolfhound in front of the house and discovers that Mr. Taraba has been hit by a car and is in the hospital again. It's horrible news, but it also brings something that everyone has been anticipating: rain. It's raining outside, and the stress is dissipating.
