"Nali De Ayi" (那里的阿姨)

She cleans, she washes, she cooks, she sweeps. Her arms and legs wield the tools of her trade methodically, almost automaton-like. Her mind, though, is miles and miles away – on the edge of Mongolia’s Ugiinuur Lake 沃吉诺尔湖, on the gold beaches of the Penghu Archipelago 澎湖群島, in the sunny fields of Dongchuan 东川, in the wispy mists of Huangshan 黄山. Where is Ayi now, really? Are we what we do, or are we what we dream? This question is an especially poignant one for the legions of ayis, construction workers, drivers and security guards who silently, stoically and invisibly make our lives easy and convenient. Amidst the swirls of animated LED diodes, Liu Dao traces the beautiful, lost dreams of the forgotten laborer.
