Geothermal energy works by harvesting heat found below the Earth's surface. When wells are drilled a mile or deeper, it enables the capture of rising hot water and steam that can be used for heat or used to rotate turbines connected to a generator to produce electricity.
Energy activist Jamie Beard says geothermal energy can be made more accessible if we use techniques borrowed from fracking. During TEDMonterey 2021, she shed light on this technique and other innovations that could make the energy source more widespread and accessible.
