Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 -- 1921) is known especially for The Carnival of the Animals. His musical career ended at the beginning of the jazz age, and he was often criticized for rejecting romantic music elements. However, if you listen carefully to his Mazurka No. 1 you'll find that this music is much closer to Chopin's or Schubert's music than to Duke Ellington's music.
