Scientists have flagged another variant being loosely referred to as the South African variant of SARS-CoV-2 that could be of a bigger concern. Detected first in an African country, Botswana, the variant is identified as B.1.1,529 and now named Omicron by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Omicron SARS-CoV-2 is actually a variant of concern, the scientists observing the progress of this variant have said.
