00:02:15This is the sea, as old as the world itself.
00:02:19It extends over three quarters of the surface of the globe.
00:02:22The sea, the birthplace of life.

00:03:40Since time began, the ocean has withheld its secrets.
00:03:43Man has ventured merely to its threshold.
00:03:46Oceanographers have, with precise instruments,
00:03:49presented us with a framework of facts.
00:03:51Around these facts, our imaginations reconstruct
00:03:54the eerie, forbidding atmosphere of the deep.
00:03:57Scientists, working with sonic equipment,
00:04:00discovered a mysterious layer which returned an answer to sound waves.
00:04:04This layer measured over 300 miles and lay 1,500 feet below the surface.
00:04:10It was soon noted that the phantom layer rose to the surface at night
00:04:13and descended to the deep water in the daytime.
00:04:16It is composed of living creatures capable of locomotion
00:04:20that are apparently strongly repelled by sunlight.
00:04:24Some oceanographers believe the layer to be made up of plankton.
00:04:28Others suggest that it is a gigantic concentration of fish.
00:04:32The most startling theory about the phantom layer
00:04:34is that it is composed of millions of squid.
00:04:37This theory is supported by the fact that squid are tremendously abundant.
00:04:41As the sun's rays become weak and soon turn into complete darkness,
00:04:46the fish are all black, brown, or silver.
00:04:49In the blackness of the deep sea,
00:04:51the strange phenomenon of luminescence is found.
00:04:54Half the fish that inhabit the darkened waters
00:04:56are able to turn their luminous torches on or off at will.
00:04:59Lower forms of life are known to have this luminous ability as well.
00:05:03Some fish have rows of lights.
00:05:05Perhaps these are signals, signs of recognition.
00:05:08The deep sea squid ejects a fluid which becomes luminous,
00:05:11a counterpart to the ink ejected by his cousin who lives in shallow water.
00:05:16The eyes of many creatures who live in the black world
00:05:19are enlarged and protruding,
00:05:21making the most of the intermittent lights which may reach them.
00:05:24On the other hand, some animals have no eyes at all.
00:05:27They have developed and perfected antennae and feelers.
00:05:30Their entire world is known to them through the sense of touch.
00:05:34Several years ago, a fish was caught alive off the southeast tip of Africa.
00:05:38It was an amazing sight.
00:05:40This animal was supposed to have been dead for at least 60 million years.
00:05:44After this discovery, they found the frill shark.
00:05:47He lived 25 to 30 million years ago.
00:05:50Perhaps there are other such anachronisms to be found in this region
00:05:54about which we know so little, other links with the past.
00:05:57Perhaps we can find the answers to many of these questions.
00:06:00Perhaps we can find the answers to many of these questions.
00:06:03We are now prepared to invade this black wilderness.
00:06:17I hope you enjoyed the pictures.
00:06:19We had a great time filming them.
00:06:21As most of you know, tomorrow marks the completion of Mr. Matheny's diving bell.
00:06:25I hope the next film we make will give us a lot more information.
00:06:38Do you really think you'll find it much different at greater depths?
00:06:41Occasionally, a new species may rise briefly to about a hundred feet from the surface
00:06:46and be seen by a diver.
00:06:48They return quickly, however, to, oh, about 600 feet.
00:06:52We intend to see what may exist thousands of feet below that.
00:06:56Matheny, I've had a lot of admiration for the things you've been doing
00:06:59in shipbuilding and navigation equipment,
00:07:01but this diving bell of yours is sheer nonsense.
00:07:03It's a waste of money.
00:07:05I'm sorry you don't share our enthusiasm.
00:07:08Even if it does work, which is doubtful,
00:07:10does that justify the cost involved?
00:07:13Curiosity is one thing, but you spent over $70,000 on a toy.
00:07:17Have you ever heard of Mallard Wyman?
00:07:20Of course, I've read his books, and I believe he's your brother.
00:07:24He believes a sea could hold a food supply vast enough to feed the entire world.
00:07:29You built this bell for him?
00:07:31I'm afraid Mr. Wyman needs no help from us.
00:07:34He had his practically completed at the time we began.
00:07:37Then what's the sense of another?
00:07:39No frontier was ever explored by just one expedition.
00:07:43Our first dive will be in the Pacific.
00:07:46Then we'll try the Gulf.
00:07:48Right now, Wyman is in the Caribbean.
00:07:51He's making his first attempt with his bell
00:07:54somewhere along the Southeastern Keys.
00:08:18Our position's perfect.
00:08:20Better take a rest while I double-check the bell.
00:08:23I'll be ready as soon as I get some clothes.
00:08:27Craig says our location is perfect.
00:08:30Looks like a big moment's finally here.
00:08:32Well, Laurie and I are all set. How about Miss Marshall?
00:08:34Oh, yes. No, never mind. I'll get him for you.
00:08:37Try to relax, Mr. Wyman.
00:08:39You should be elated, not worried.
00:08:41I guess I'm too anxious.
00:08:43They look at me and think I was the one who's going down there.
00:08:46What's going on?
00:08:48Wait, wait, wait, wait a minute.
00:08:51We shouldn't release anything until I come back up here with the pictures.
00:08:54What do you think I'm going down in that contraption for?
00:08:57Look, we'll have an absolute exclusive on this.
00:09:00Every wire service will get the depth information,
00:09:02but we'll be the only ones with the actual pictures.
00:09:05Now, doesn't that make what you said?
00:09:07Come on, lady reporter. The time has come for your promotion.
00:09:10Or should I say demotion?
00:09:12Well, whatever it is, Skipper, you won't lose me on this show.
00:09:15I'll come back to shore and call this office.
00:09:22Well, this will make a good picture. Hold it.
00:09:29Now, goodbye, fellas.
00:09:31Good luck, Dale. Good luck, Dale.
00:09:33Thank you. Come on, Dale.
00:09:35I know you're disappointed that Tom couldn't make it,
00:09:37but I just couldn't get him to come out.
00:09:39He asked me to give you this.
00:09:41Well, I hope he knows what he's doing.
00:09:45As I do.
00:09:51There. This is a good order.
00:10:01I...
00:10:03I suppose I shouldn't make a fool of myself
00:10:05telling you what this day means to me.
00:10:08Well, you people are taking my place in a way
00:10:11I feel as if you've been working with me since the beginning.
00:10:15We're very grateful to be able to have a part in your work.
00:10:19You'll be going deeper than any man has ever attempted before.
00:10:23I wish I could go along with you.
00:10:25I know how you feel, Mr. Wyman.
00:10:27But I'll be talking to you every inch of the way.
00:10:29I know, Craig, but it's not quite the same thing.
00:10:31Well, good luck, Craig.
00:10:35Oh, Mr. Wyman.
00:10:37You girls will let me down now.
00:10:39You take care of these fellas if they get scared.
00:10:45Stand by to drop her.
00:10:47Craig, you ready?
00:10:49Ready whenever you are.
00:10:51Air pressure okay?
00:10:53Fine.
00:10:55Everything's 100%.
00:10:58Here we go.
00:11:00All right.
00:11:02Release!
00:11:15Tilt of two degrees.
00:11:17Release one pellet from the left ballast tube.
00:11:23Another one.
00:11:27That's got it.
00:11:33All right.
00:11:35All right.
00:11:37All right.
00:11:39All right.
00:11:41All right.
00:11:43All right.
00:11:48We just passed 1,000 feet, Craig.
00:11:50How's it going?
00:11:52Everything's fine.
00:11:54Just please do tell us to get a balance.
00:11:561,500 now.
00:11:58Is it getting dark?
00:12:00No, not yet.
00:12:021,500 now.
00:12:04Is it getting dark?
00:12:06No, not yet.
00:12:32Can't be any sun penetrating now.
00:12:34You're almost 1,700.
00:12:38That's fine.
00:12:42Only half the lights are working.
00:12:44Check to the cable, no break.
00:12:48Craig, are you okay?
00:12:50I don't know.
00:12:52The lights.
00:12:56Craig, what happened?
00:12:58I think the equipment.
00:13:00Craig, what's working?
00:13:02What's working, Craig?
00:13:04The cable's lit.
00:13:06We're hanging over to one side.
00:13:08I think we're gonna...
00:13:10Craig! Craig!
00:13:12Can you hear me?
00:13:15Craig!
00:13:30Excuse me.
00:13:34Hello?
00:13:36Yes, he is. Just a moment.
00:13:38Mr. Matheny?
00:13:40Long distance.
00:13:42Hello?
00:13:44Oh, hello, Hank. How's everything?
00:13:46What?
00:13:50One of my reporters radioed from the ship.
00:13:52He'll interview Wyman before the launch gets out there.
00:13:55I can't believe it.
00:13:57The conditions where I'd be,
00:13:59I see.
00:14:01Yes, of course I do.
00:14:03You can reach me here. I'll be in Aldi.
00:14:05Thanks for calling, Hank.
00:14:09Your brother's attempt was a complete failure.
00:14:11The bell broke loose at 1,700 feet.
00:14:15Can we contact the ship?
00:14:17I'm afraid we'll have to sit tight until Hank's men get into Key West.
00:14:20He promised to call us as soon as he hears from them.
00:14:29Mr. Wyman?
00:14:31Sorry to barge in on you this way.
00:14:33We'll be leaving the ship soon.
00:14:35I wonder if you'd give me some information.
00:14:37You saw everything? What can I add to it?
00:14:39Would you mind telling me something about the occupants?
00:14:42I know Dale Marshall, but not much about the other three.
00:14:45The other three, as you put it,
00:14:47were very brave people.
00:14:49And over-competent, as I was.
00:14:51Well, had they been working with you long?
00:14:53Laurie and Paul were students of mine.
00:14:55And I was a student of theirs.
00:14:57Laurie and Paul were students of mine at the Institute of Oceanography.
00:15:01Craig joined us a bit later on.
00:15:03Mainly, I suppose, because of Laurie's devotion.
00:15:06Well, did they have any part in actually designing the bell?
00:15:10No, I'm afraid not.
00:15:12I'm the only one who's responsible for that.
00:15:15Well, what do you believe went wrong today?
00:15:18I don't know.
00:15:20If I did, it wouldn't help matters.
00:15:22Well, the bell obviously had a weakness.
00:15:24You must have some idea where it was.
00:15:27Land and research.
00:15:29I don't know the answer.
00:15:31The public will take a pretty dim view of your research.
00:15:34I suppose so.
00:15:36The right opinion of me doesn't matter now.
00:15:57Craig.
00:16:12Craig.
00:16:17Craig D.
00:16:19We gave it to one of his marshals.
00:16:21Craig, did we?
00:16:23Yeah.
00:16:25I don't know how to deal with you.
00:16:29You feel all right?
00:16:31I think so.
00:16:36Margo, stop it!
00:16:38Hold yourself!
00:16:40Stop it!
00:16:42Hold yourself!
00:17:05How much time do you think we have?
00:17:08The oxygen tank only holds 100 cubic feet.
00:17:11Well, at least the shut-off valves worked.
00:17:14We could have been flooded when the cable broke.
00:17:17Although I don't know what good it is to prolong the inevitable.
00:17:21Laurie worked with Wyman for three years to build this.
00:17:24Dale Marshall was going to get a big story.
00:17:26You were going to see new sea creatures for the first time.
00:17:30Pretty noble ambitions to be blown up by one engineering mistake.
00:17:34Oh, well, I probably wouldn't have seen any new...
00:17:40Craig.
00:17:43We're not on the bottom.
00:17:45There's light out here.
00:17:47We must be on some kind of a shelf not too far below the surface.
00:17:51I don't see how that's possible because we dropped out of the penetration of light.
00:17:56Well, how could we have moved upward?
00:17:59I don't know.
00:18:01At this point, I couldn't care less.
00:18:04Will we be able to get out of this thing?
00:18:07Look, at this level, the pressure shouldn't bother us.
00:18:11We should be miles in the darkness by now.
00:18:15Yet we're not.
00:18:19Well, what are we waiting for?
00:18:22Let's check out of here.
00:18:31It'll probably be a long, long haul to get to the surface.
00:18:35Just remember, try not to get panicky.
00:18:38Well, you better go first. Give the girls somebody to follow.
00:18:41Right.
00:20:01Captain, Mr. Wyman!
00:20:03Come here, quick!
00:20:31Do they have a chance to make it?
00:20:34The pressure's much too great for survival at that depth.
00:20:37Then why would they attempt to leave the bell?
00:20:40Not knowing how deep they went, I suppose they figured it was worth a try.
00:20:43Isn't there something we can do? Some way that...
00:20:47They'll never make it to the surface even without the pressure.
00:20:50I'm afraid they'll repress the moment they left the bell.
00:20:53What we see is their bodies floating upward with the currents.
00:20:57What we see is their bodies floating upward with the currents.
00:21:57What we see is their bodies floating upward with the currents.
00:22:19Radio BRI 421.
00:22:22Calling ships in vicinity of longitude 23,
00:22:25latitude 75.
00:22:27Please stand by to search the area.
00:22:30Repeating, ships in vicinity of marlin 8,
00:22:33please stand by to assist.
00:22:44JCR 774, we're about a quarter of a mile north by east of original location.
00:22:49I have a diver descending. He'll cover a thousand yards moving south by west.
00:22:54I'll advise of any results.
00:22:59Got it. Over and out.
00:23:04How long do you think it'll take for the bodies to reach the surface?
00:23:07It's been quite some time since we lost them on the sonar.
00:23:10They may not come up this far at all.
00:23:13Prepare to move out if we don't spot them in about five hours.
00:23:18I know it's none of my business, but didn't you have your own money tied up in that bell?
00:23:22I mean it was your own project with no affiliation.
00:23:25None of the universities had any confidence in it.
00:23:28Only myself and those down there.
00:23:32I understand there's another bell ready, built by an outfit in California.
00:23:36My younger brother designed it.
00:23:38They'll be interested in finding out where mine failed.
00:23:42I suppose we'll never know the answer to that.
00:23:52It's fantastic.
00:23:55There must be miles upon miles of these tunnels.
00:23:58Yeah. So many of them we could easily get lost.
00:24:04We better head back.
00:24:06Yeah.
00:24:22You were gone so long, we were getting worried.
00:24:25Our lives were reprieved today, Laurie.
00:24:28I don't think we should get scared now.
00:24:30I found the answer to one thing.
00:24:32These rocks are loaded with phosphorus.
00:24:34That's how the caverns were illuminated.
00:24:36But did you find anything else? A way out?
00:24:38We might be here a long time before we find the way out.
00:24:41A long time?
00:24:43You see, we're a good many miles beneath the surface.
00:24:46The bell won't ring.
00:24:48It's going to be a long climb up, even if we do find a way.
00:24:51What do you mean, if?
00:24:53We'll have to find a way.
00:24:55Well, it'll be treacherous going, but we'll find a way out in time.
00:24:58First thing to do is keep our heads, and put something in our stomachs.
00:25:01Saw plenty of fish down there.
00:25:03We can fashion some spears and rods in the bell.
00:25:06You're going back to the bell?
00:25:08Well, I don't think we'd get very far without our shoes and a few other things.
00:25:11We'll have to find a way out.
00:25:13We'll have to find a way out.
00:25:15Well, I don't think we'd get very far without our shoes and a few other things.
00:25:18Look, as long as I'm going to be a caveman, I want to be a comfortable man.
00:25:21Come on, let's go.
00:26:15We'd better work fast. This place is nearly empty.
00:26:45Come on, let's get out of here while we're still ahead.
00:26:47Anything else we can take?
00:26:49This compass will help us more than everything else put together.
00:26:51Let's go.
00:27:15He didn't leave any too soon.
00:27:44There's a storm following right in our wake.
00:27:47Come in.
00:27:49Excuse me, sir, but I have something I believe is important.
00:27:54Yes?
00:27:55Well, I called you and Mr. Wyman while I was watching the sonar, but...
00:27:58Well, apparently you didn't hear me, and I wanted to keep my eyes on the screen.
00:28:01You saw the bodies again?
00:28:03Well, sir, I don't know exactly what I saw, but I'm sure they weren't dead bodies.
00:28:08I saw two of the same masses move practically as they did before.
00:28:13How do you know they're the same?
00:28:15Well, the characteristics were identical, and they weren't floating.
00:28:19I'm positive they were moving under their own power.
00:28:22How long did you have them?
00:28:24Several minutes, sir.
00:28:26They moved along together, then one suddenly changed direction.
00:28:29I lost them at exactly the same spot as before.
00:28:32You probably saw some large fish that were curious about the bell.
00:28:37Begging your pardon, sir, but I've seen plenty of fish on that screen.
00:28:40I know this reading was of something else.
00:28:43You said they changed direction.
00:28:45The currents were pretty strong at that depth.
00:28:47Well, only one veered off.
00:28:49The other continued straight up.
00:28:51Well, whatever the objects were, it's a sense the bodies aren't going to float to the top,
00:28:56and we've wasted enough time as it is.
00:28:58Sir, it's possible that they...
00:29:00That'll be all, Wilson. Return to the radio room.
00:29:02I have problems enough with the storm to contend with.
00:29:05Yes, sir.
00:29:11Hmm.
00:29:13You know, if we had all the conveniences of a kitchen,
00:29:16I'd still prefer a barbecue just like this.
00:29:19When we leave here, what do we eat then?
00:29:21Well, these caverns have water pools everywhere.
00:29:25Probably fish in all of them.
00:29:27I also saw some planktonic shrimp back around the rocks.
00:29:31It must really be late.
00:29:33Is anyone as tired as I am?
00:29:35You better get some sleep, Laurie.
00:29:37You too, Dale. We've been through a lot today.
00:29:39We'll probably do a lot of walking tomorrow.
00:29:41Dale and I found the crevice. It's fairly dark inside.
00:29:44At least it will seem like nighttime.
00:29:46Don't worry about getting cold in there.
00:29:48I'll bet the temperature here doesn't vary two degrees.
00:29:50You make it sound like Miami Beach.
00:29:52Come on. It's not the ocean floor either.
00:29:55Good night.
00:29:57Good night.
00:29:59Take all this diving gear along with us?
00:30:02It's too heavy.
00:30:04Leave it right here.
00:30:06What do you think our chances are?
00:30:09What do you really think?
00:30:12You sound as though I haven't been leveling with Dale and Laurie.
00:30:15I know you, Craig.
00:30:17You've got an uncanny ability to hide what you feel.
00:30:21Paul, I've been diving for quite a few years.
00:30:24But the deepest I ever went was about 200 feet.
00:30:28Frankly, I haven't any more idea about where we are now than you do.
00:30:32Well, haven't you ever heard of these underground caverns?
00:30:35I've read some theories about the earth being honeycombed with caverns containing air pockets.
00:30:40Then the air we're breathing might not be coming from the surface.
00:30:44Possibly not, if you want to believe theories.
00:30:48How far down do you think we are?
00:30:51No idea.
00:30:53Might find out something about the mineral deposits along the way.
00:30:58Well, I guess only time will tell.
00:31:02I'm going to get some sleep.
00:31:05You know, I'll probably dream about breaking an altitude record in a helium balloon.
00:31:11You know, I'll probably dream about breaking an altitude record in a helium balloon.
00:32:41I think we've made progress.
00:33:05Will you drink it?
00:33:08No content. Probably as good as any well water.
00:33:15It's better.
00:33:29Can we afford a time out here?
00:33:31Sure we can, Laurie. We'll rest until you're ready.
00:34:02You should have kept that.
00:34:05Maybe a while before you get anything else to read.
00:34:08When I need your advice, I'll ask for it.
00:34:11Sorry.
00:34:13Didn't realize.
00:34:14You don't realize a lot of things.
00:34:16You probably never will.
00:34:20I didn't mean to intrude, dear. That was just a friendly joke.
00:34:24Friendly?
00:34:26Well, you just listen to me, Miss Innocent.
00:34:29There's nothing friendly between two females.
00:34:31There never was and there never will be.
00:34:35Sorry you feel that way.
00:34:37I was hoping we could help one another.
00:34:41You don't need any help.
00:34:43And neither do I.
00:34:45Not as long as we have two men around us.
00:35:03There's no opening. We're trapped.
00:35:05Take it easy, Dale. We'll find one.
00:35:07She's right.
00:35:09The only openings are small cracks.
00:35:11We couldn't possibly get through them.
00:35:13We'll have to go back.
00:35:14No, we shouldn't lose our direction.
00:35:16There's a water pool to the left, about 50 yards back.
00:35:19We'll have to try going through it.
00:35:21And if that doesn't lead to another cavern?
00:35:23Then we'll have to drop back to the fork and try another course.
00:35:25That'll mean losing a lot of time.
00:35:28Well, let's try it.
00:35:30Yeah, let's go.
00:35:44Let's go.
00:36:14Sure hope Paul brings back plenty of shrimp.
00:36:34Feel like I could eat about three dozen of them.
00:36:37He said there wouldn't be any shrimp around in the clear water.
00:36:39He's looking for some sort of crawfish.
00:36:41Just so there are plenty of them.
00:36:43So what's the difference? They both taste terrible.
00:36:47I'm going to hunt up some roots for the fire.
00:36:53Come on.
00:36:59What's up?
00:37:01Take a look at that.
00:37:06So we're not the first ones to be here.
00:37:09You know, it's not exactly my line, but...
00:37:12I'd say he's been dead about 10 or 12 years.
00:37:16It's horrible.
00:37:17He probably kept walking until he dropped.
00:37:20Look, this is the best indication we've had yet.
00:37:22This man could have come down here directly from the surface.
00:37:25And I suppose he liked it so well he decided to stay here and die.
00:37:30Perhaps he just lost his way.
00:37:32Is that any better?
00:37:34Craig!
00:37:40What on earth?
00:37:52So he's a weirdo.
00:37:54Who else would come down here?
00:37:57You're so right, Skipper.
00:37:59Listen, I don't care who leaves us out.
00:38:02Hello!
00:38:04Hello up there!
00:38:14Hello!
00:38:17I guess he can't hear us.
00:38:19Come on.
00:38:35Hello.
00:38:36Are we glad to see you.
00:38:40What do you want here?
00:38:42We don't want anything except to get out.
00:38:46We were underwater in a diving bell.
00:38:48A cable snap dropping us to the bottom.
00:38:51We left the bell and found our way in here.
00:38:53You see, we were attempting to break a depth record.
00:38:56Oh, I'm Paul Whitmore.
00:38:57This is Craig Randall, Laurie Talbot, and Dale Marshall.
00:39:01I've been here 14 years.
00:39:0414 years?
00:39:09I don't think we want to stay quite that long.
00:39:12Would you mind leading us out?
00:39:15There's no way out.
00:39:18But how did you get here?
00:39:19And that fellow back there?
00:39:21He was killed a long time ago.
00:39:25I was more fortunate.
00:39:27But how did you get here?
00:39:29The same as you.
00:39:31And you haven't found a way out in all this time?
00:39:35There is no way.
00:39:40This is air we're breathing.
00:39:42We wouldn't be here if there weren't an opening to the surface.
00:39:46The air comes from a volcano about two miles from here.
00:39:51Are you sure of that?
00:39:53I'll show it to you.
00:39:55Would you like to visit my home?
00:39:59I don't know.
00:40:02It isn't far.
00:40:04I'll take you there.
00:40:35You need rest.
00:40:42You've certainly made this place comfortable enough.
00:40:47I carried stones here to make pots and flint for fire.
00:40:53Sometimes I traveled to the salt water to bring back seaweed.
00:41:00You look at the size of this cloth.
00:41:03There's no known species this large.
00:41:06I use it to spear fish.
00:41:09But you have fine weapons.
00:41:12With them we can hunt much better.
00:41:15Say, are you positive there's no opening to the top?
00:41:18Even a small one we could hack out with some kind of tools?
00:41:22I'll take you to the volcano so you can see for yourself.
00:41:27And then you will know as I do.
00:41:30How soon can we start?
00:41:32We must first have food.
00:41:35I have enough for all of us.
00:41:43Do you think he really knows?
00:41:45I don't think he knows up from down.
00:41:47But we'll have to go to find out if there is a volcano.
00:41:49Well, there's no sense in all of us knowing.
00:41:51You and Laurie should take a breather.
00:41:53Do you want us to stay here for a reason?
00:41:55Well, we'll probably be taken to some pretty rough places.
00:41:58No telling how dangerous.
00:42:00I'd feel better if you stayed.
00:42:07You all set, Craig?
00:42:08Yep.
00:42:09The old man's been up there waiting for over an hour.
00:42:12Don't you think he's a little eager to show us that volcano?
00:42:16That's why I want the girls to stay down here.
00:42:19Never did buy that story about that ship sinking 14 years ago.
00:42:24What do you think he's got up his sleeve?
00:42:26Maybe nothing.
00:42:28But I still think it'd be a good idea if you'd wait down here with Dave and Laurie.
00:42:31Oh, now wait a minute, Daddy-O.
00:42:33I'm no babysitter.
00:42:34I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:42:36I'll trade places with you.
00:42:38Okay, you win.
00:42:40We'll both go.
00:42:42I think the girls will be all right as long as we stay with him.
00:42:44Yeah.
00:42:45Besides, they're planning a swimming party.
00:42:47And we weren't invited.
00:42:50Too bad we can't get a sunset.
00:42:53I can do without it.
00:42:55The sun always gives me a bad time.
00:42:58I got birds once at the beach and...
00:43:00Oh, well, it's not important now.
00:43:03We've been here quite a long time.
00:43:04They should be getting back soon.
00:43:06Are you afraid they'll bring bad news?
00:43:08I'm afraid I am.
00:43:11I keep telling myself that old man couldn't possibly be right.
00:43:16I can't make myself believe it.
00:43:18We'll know soon enough, one way or the other.
00:43:22You know, I was afraid...
00:43:24until I realized that if we do spend the rest of our lives here,
00:43:28we can at least start a new one.
00:43:30Anything that happened in the past can't bother us here.
00:43:34Don't make me think about it.
00:43:36And let's not start painting any dark pictures before we know.
00:43:48They're here.
00:43:52Let's go.
00:44:15You're so quiet. Does that mean...
00:44:17There's volcanoes there, all right.
00:44:19Cutting air by the ton.
00:44:23Then he was right.
00:44:25Laurie!
00:44:26Well...
00:44:28Laurie, look, it won't be so bad.
00:44:32We took it hard, too, at first,
00:44:34walking down there and all that, but...
00:44:37Look, I know it's not going to be so terrible.
00:44:39After all, we've gotten...
00:44:46Laurie, listen.
00:44:50Please, look.
00:44:52I know how you feel.
00:44:54As though you have nothing to look forward to, but...
00:44:57I felt the same way until I realized how really fortunate I am.
00:45:02That is, if you...
00:45:05What I'm trying to say is that...
00:45:08Laurie, I've been in love with you for a long time.
00:45:11I planned to tell you before now.
00:45:13I just... I never seemed to be able to.
00:45:16Oh, I wish you...
00:45:18I wanted you to love me.
00:45:25Oh, Laurie, as long as I have you, my life's complete.
00:45:28Anything beyond that's unimportant.
00:45:49I love you.
00:45:51I love you.
00:45:53I love you.
00:46:18And reports indicate the strike will be settled this week.
00:46:21According to a local saying,
00:46:23Marine Research of California has abandoned the scheduled launching
00:46:26of an experimental diving bell.
00:46:28J.R. Matheny, president of Marine Research,
00:46:31is rumored to have lost some $90,000
00:46:33constructing the bell during the past 18 months.
00:46:36And now for a look at the weather.
00:46:38Early morning fog will cover the harbor area
00:46:40with little change in temperature.
00:46:51TWA flight number 201 is now arriving.
00:47:22Good afternoon.
00:47:24My name is Wyman.
00:47:26I believe Mr. Matheny is expecting me.
00:47:28Yes, of course.
00:47:30Mr. Wyman to see you.
00:47:32Send him in.
00:47:34It's the first door.
00:47:35Go right in, please.
00:47:38Good afternoon.
00:47:40Good afternoon.
00:47:42Good afternoon.
00:47:44Good afternoon.
00:47:46Good afternoon.
00:47:48Good afternoon.
00:47:50Good afternoon.
00:47:57Pleasure to meet you.
00:47:59Very pleased to meet you, sir.
00:48:00Sit down.
00:48:01You certainly got out here quickly.
00:48:03I came directly from the airport.
00:48:05The telegram sounded quite urgent.
00:48:07Suppose you elaborate for me.
00:48:09Well, I understand you're giving up your plans to try your bell.
00:48:13We've given it a lot of consideration.
00:48:15The project has been costly,
00:48:17and we've devoted the entire lab to the bell's development.
00:48:20I'm afraid the wisest thing we can do at this time
00:48:22is just give up the project.
00:48:24Yes, of course, because of the results of mine.
00:48:26Wyman, if it weren't for your pioneering in research,
00:48:29this bell wouldn't have even been built.
00:48:31When your brother came to work for me,
00:48:33I knew where his ideas were coming from.
00:48:35You mean your bell is similar to mine?
00:48:40As you can see,
00:48:42the designs are identical.
00:48:45The hatch, the cables, are they the same?
00:48:48Why, yes.
00:48:49Why?
00:48:51Mr. Metheny, I'd like to ask you for a personal favor.
00:48:53A favor?
00:48:55You have no confidence in your bell because it was patterned after mine,
00:48:58and likely so.
00:49:00But if I could take the responsibility off your shoulders...
00:49:02What do you think you'd do?
00:49:04I could make the dive myself,
00:49:06in the same location as before.
00:49:08I don't understand.
00:49:10How can you of all people consider doing this
00:49:12when you know that the bell is obviously...
00:49:13I believe it can be done.
00:49:14I've always believed it.
00:49:16If I can't at least turn my failure into a success,
00:49:19I'll be doing a grave injustice to four gallant people.
00:49:23What makes you think that the results would be any different this time?
00:49:27Since I returned from the Caribbean,
00:49:29I've been like a man who is living apart from his own soul.
00:49:33I knew there was an answer somewhere,
00:49:34but when I searched for it, my mind just wouldn't function.
00:49:38I think it was because of my condition
00:49:40that I finally discovered where the bell failed.
00:49:43You found the reason?
00:49:45The chain broke not at the weakest link, but at the strongest.
00:49:48I don't understand.
00:49:50The bell was designed with the force
00:49:51to take a stress five times greater than what we anticipated.
00:49:54We even thought of using booms on two different ships
00:49:57as an added safety factor.
00:49:59We overcame that with added couplings
00:50:01together with a pelvic release system for balance.
00:50:04But in our extreme measures for added strength,
00:50:07we actually defeated our own purpose.
00:50:09Until we stopped work here,
00:50:10the plans were to use three ships for support.
00:50:12You don't need them.
00:50:14Depending on the overall weight descending,
00:50:16you must equalize the supports to parallel
00:50:19the point of water pressure above and below 2,000 feet.
00:50:23You mean it's the pressure pushing upwards that causes stress?
00:50:27Exactly.
00:50:28We went all out for strength and supporting the bell.
00:50:32When it reached the point of water pressure
00:50:33where there was no up and down factor,
00:50:35the couplings ripped off the seams.
00:50:38Wyman, I know what a successful operation would mean to you,
00:50:41and I certainly want to help,
00:50:43but this has all come so fast.
00:50:45I don't know what to say.
00:50:47Of course, I wouldn't ask you
00:50:48without offering something in exchange.
00:50:50I have a ship available.
00:50:51It will take us to the Caribbean.
00:50:53It's fully equipped.
00:50:54The owner will do everything he can to assist.
00:50:59I suppose if I didn't go along with you,
00:51:01it would only be a matter of time
00:51:02before you'd raise some money
00:51:04and be building another bell of your own.
00:51:06Does it mean an unnecessary delay?
00:51:09However, I'm afraid there's one thing I'll have to object to.
00:51:13You're going under.
00:51:15But if I know that young brother of yours,
00:51:19you can jump at the chance.
00:51:21Let's go out to the lab and see him.
00:53:33Oh, so little.
00:53:34I've had to fill him three times already this morning.
00:53:37I suppose that means
00:53:38I'm not doing my share of the work.
00:53:40That's not at all what I meant.
00:53:42Anyway, we'll have some decent containers
00:53:44as soon as the men come back from the bell.
00:53:46Well, I hope they bring my camera back with them.
00:53:49I could use it for one of the decorations.
00:53:51Craig said that they would only bring back
00:53:53the most important things.
00:53:54I'm sure your camera...
00:53:55Craig said this.
00:53:57Craig said this.
00:53:59What is he around here anyway?
00:54:00Some kind of monarch or something?
00:54:02You could take that old fool with him
00:54:04when he could use a couple of extra hands
00:54:05to help carry things.
00:54:07I'm sure Craig knows what he's doing.
00:54:10That's exactly what I mean.
00:54:12I'm fed up with his doings.
00:54:15Nobody's going to dominate me.
00:54:16I'll see to that.
00:54:17Nobody's trying to.
00:54:18If you think I'm going to put up with this routine,
00:54:20you're crazy.
00:54:21Dale, there's nothing I can do to make you feel better.
00:54:23I don't care.
00:54:24I don't care.
00:54:27Dale, there's nothing I can do to make you feel any better.
00:54:30Oh, yes, there is.
00:54:31And you're going to start doing a few things my way.
00:54:33Dale, I don't want to argue with you.
00:54:35Will you just leave me alone?
00:54:36I'll leave you alone when I get good and ready to.
00:54:38And so will Craig when the time comes.
00:54:41Well, that's it.
00:54:43You're not getting all the attention.
00:54:46You're pretty smug, aren't you?
00:54:48Just because we're all trapped...
00:54:49That's enough!
00:54:50And Dale, I don't want to discuss this again.
00:54:56Dale.
00:55:22Here.
00:55:23Yeah.
00:55:26How many more trips is this going to take?
00:55:28This lung is nearly empty.
00:55:29Well, there's just a few more things I'd like to get down there.
00:55:31You probably have enough air for one more dive.
00:55:34So let's make it count.
00:55:35Okay, well, I'll keep an eye on you.
00:55:57I found the original bell.
00:56:00It's a hundred feet below me.
00:56:02Wait a minute.
00:56:04Unless I've lost my mind, I see two men in the water.
00:56:27I telephoned above as soon as I spotted the other bell,
00:56:30and they still can't believe it.
00:56:31How is Laurie and Miss Marshall?
00:56:33The girls have been doing all right.
00:56:56How long to get out of here?
00:57:07Only a few minutes.
00:57:08I've got some coffee.
00:57:12Good.
00:57:18There.
00:57:19It's coming around.
00:57:27Come on.
00:57:46I like you much better than the others.
00:57:49That's just fine.
00:57:50I'm very glad you do.
00:57:52I will help you.
00:57:53That's all I need.
00:57:55We will kill them.
00:57:57We will what?
00:57:59It is easy, like I killed Maurice a long time ago.
00:58:02And after we kill them, we can be alone here.
00:58:07Now you stay away from me.
00:58:09Stay away!
00:58:11Stay away from me!
00:58:13Maybe I should kill you instead.
00:58:18No, stay away!
00:58:25Stay away!
00:58:34The volcano!
00:58:55The volcano!
00:59:26Let's go into one of these openings.
00:59:28That's not going to do any good.
00:59:29We've got to go find Greg.
00:59:55Greg!
01:00:23Greg, are you all right?
01:00:24Are you all right?
01:00:26Yeah, I'm all right.
01:00:27How about you?
01:00:28We're all right.
01:00:29And the old man?
01:00:30He was killed in the avalanche.
01:00:35Here, put these on.
01:00:36Where did you get these?
01:00:37Never mind.
01:00:38Come on.
01:00:41Come on, follow me.
01:00:54Easy now, not too much speed.
01:01:22Give her a little whack.
01:01:28I really can't explain the feeling when we first saw the bell.
01:01:31We'd given up hope and, well, nothing ever looked so good.
01:01:36I do wish the old man had been as fortunate as we are.
01:01:40If Mr. Wyman's up there, tell him that Laurie is fine.
01:01:45She'll be saying hello in just a minute.
01:01:48Laurie, I...
01:01:51I think from now on, my whole life will be changed.
01:01:54I realize how terrible I've acted.
01:01:57Do you think he can ever forgive you?
01:01:59Of course I can, Dale.
01:02:01I've always wanted our friendship.
01:02:14Laurie.
01:02:15Well, little lady, you've got the scoop of the year.
01:02:18Well, not this time, Jimmy.
01:02:19The story goes to all of you.
01:02:21I want you to meet your benefactor, Mr. Matheny.
01:02:24Mr. Matheny, we're very grateful.
01:02:26We have only Wyman to thank.
01:02:27It's all his idea.
01:02:29Can't thank all of you enough.
01:02:31Come on, you people, move back a little.
01:02:33Let's give him room to breathe.
01:02:36Room to breathe.
01:02:37You know, I never thought about it much, but there's nothing greater.
01:02:42Well, I don't know about you people, but, man, I'm ready for a two-inch steak.
01:02:47Bravo!
