Bengbu is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province, an important comprehensive industrial base in Anhui Province, a national comprehensive transportation hub, a regional central city, a member of the Hefei metropolitan area, and a member of the Hefei Urban Area, the Bengbu pilot zone of the China (Anhui) Pilot Free Trade Zone. As of 2020, Bengbu has 4 districts and 3 counties, with a total area of 5,951 square kilometres. Bengbu is located in east China, west of the Yangtze River Delta, northeast of Anhui Province, in the middle reaches of the Huai River, along the Qinling-Huai River, the geographical boundary between north and south China. The territory is dominated by plains, with hills scattered in the south. It belongs to the transition zone between the northern subtropical humid monsoon climate and the southern temperate semi-humid monsoon climate zone. The main railway lines passing through Bengbu are the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Huainan Railway, Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and Hepeng High-speed Railway.
On January 1, 1947, Bengbu was officially established as a city, the first city in Anhui Province. Bengbu is one of the birthplaces of the Huaihe culture, and the engraved symbols unearthed at the Shuangdun culture site 7,300 years ago have been identified as one of the important origins of Chinese writing.
