Drive My Car is an adaptation of Haruki Murakami's 2014 short story of the same name from the collection Men without Women.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi co-wrote and directed the 2021 Japanese drama film Drive My Car. It is based mostly on Haruki Murakami's short tale of the same name from his 2014 short story collection Men Without Women, with inspiration drawn from other works in the collection. The film follows Ysuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) as he leads a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima while grieving the death of his wife Oto.
Drive My Car made its global premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, competing for the Palme d'Or and winning three prizes, including Best Screenplay. The film was widely praised by critics, with many hailing it as one of the finest films of 2021. At the 94th Academy Awards, it received four nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is the first Japanese film to receive a Best Picture nomination. At the 79th Golden Globe Awards the film won Best Foreign Language Film.
