In the opposition day debate on the peerage of Lord Lebedev, tensions boiled over as Conservative MP Lee Anderson accused Labour of not liking “foreign names” and Conservative MP Simon Bailey lost his temper, alleging that an opposing MP had labelled the Conservative party “xenophobic”.

Dame Eleanor Laing the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons lambasted MPs, telling the House, “nobody in this chamber is calling anybody xenophobic”.

Laing reminded MPs to “keep this at the right level”.
