What is a pleural effusion?
A pleural effusion is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the pleural space
It can be detected on X- ray when 300 mL or more of fluid is present, and clinically when there is 500 mL or more.
The accumulation of serous fluid within the pleural space is termed pleural effusion.
The accumulation of frank pus is termed
empyema .
The accumulation of of blood is haemothorax.
The accumulation of chyle is a chylothorax.
