The full movie “Die Heiden von Kummerow (1967)” is based on the hit novel of the same name by Ehm Welk and tells a humorous story about life in a small western Pomeranian village during the imperial era. Kummerow stands for Biesenbrow (north of Angermünde and today also part of the town in the Uckermark), where Ehm Welk saw the light of day in 1884. The old film gives a fond insight into people who lived in the "good old days" when Germany still was a monarchy under Kaiser Wilhelm.
Krischan Klammbüdel has been tending the Kummerower cows for eleven years. Nobody knows where he lives in winter. He always comes to the small Western Pomeranian village around Easter, just at the time when the children in Kummerow are standing in the cold mill stream to find out who can stand it the longest in the cold and then call himsel "King of Kummerow". Pastor Breithaupt is the pugnacious pastor of souls in the village of Kummerow. With a powerful voice, he fights against pagan customs as well as against the new "revolutionary" attitude. The local children and the cowherd Krischan cause him particular grief.
