For the Batak ethnic group of Lake Toba in North Sumatra Province, their handwoven textile, known as "ulos" is a significant symbol.

Quoting The Ministry of Tourism data, it is not only made to wear as clothing but serves as precious heirlooms, a symbol of status, or ceremonial gifts during rites in the human's life cycle.

Traditionally, weaving was the task of women only, and men were prohibited from the work since it is believed that while weaving, women imbue the cloth with symbolic values connected with women’s role in caring for family, children, and the community. See more in the video.
