Couple Upgrade Living Room With Convenience Features, New Decor and Furniture

This guy wanted to upgrade his living room setup so he and his friend got to work by swapping some of the furniture and decor items, fixing issues with the current setup as well as adding new items in the space. They started by centering the off-center TV and added a dedicated power outlet for it. Additionally, they built a new shelf space by the dining table to keep memorabilia, added a nice rug under the couch, as well as replaced the standing lamp and coffee table. Once all the work was done, the changes brought in a sense of warmth to the space and made it much cozier.

00:02 So in today's video, I'm going to be working
00:13 on upgrading the living room space here,
00:16 doing some DIY work, as well as adding some key pieces
00:19 that I've been waiting for for a while.
00:20 If you haven't already seen the first video,
00:22 you should definitely go check it out.
00:24 So we did a bunch of, you know, DIY transformation.
00:27 So we added, you know, a floating shelf.
00:29 We added a slat wall, built a couch.
00:32 We're going to be adding some new pieces.
00:34 We're going to be replacing some old pieces
00:36 and we're going to be fixing some issues
00:37 that we had with the first, you know, setup.
00:40 So the first setup we had initially mounted the TV
00:44 kind of off center, but there was a reason for that.
00:46 So we were supposed to put a floating shelf
00:49 right next to the TV,
00:50 but it didn't really work out the way we wanted.
00:52 So in today's video, I'm going to be adding
00:54 an electrical outlet behind the TV
00:56 'cause I initially ran a power cable through the wall
00:59 and apparently it's against the code.
01:01 So I'm going to be fixing that
01:02 by adding an electrical outlet behind the TV.
01:04 Also added an Xbox console to the living room.
01:06 Besides that, we've also added a floor mat to the space
01:10 to make it a little bit more cozy.
01:12 Something else we're going to be doing
01:13 is we're going to be adding some shelves
01:14 that we picked up from Ikea,
01:16 just so we can mount up, you know,
01:17 some photo frames and, you know, things like that.
01:19 Anything that's similar.
01:20 There's this one blank space, you know,
01:22 right next to the slat wall that we added
01:24 to the living room, the accent wall.
01:25 And that space, we saved it for that purpose.
01:29 And we didn't finish it up with the first video.
01:31 So we're going to be adding those as well in this video.
01:33 Lastly, we're going to add some artwork
01:35 to a blank wall we've got.
01:37 I also got rid of the LED strips
01:39 that I had underneath the couch
01:40 because honestly it just didn't work out
01:42 as well as I had hoped,
01:43 especially when we added the carpet to the living room.

06:48 All right, so now that we're done with the upgrades,
07:15 I'd love to give you guys a quick tour of the space.
07:17 First up, we've got the entertainment center.
07:19 We've got the automated rule of shades with black fascia
07:21 from Budget Blinds at the very top,
07:23 covering the high window.
07:24 Below it is a 75 inch Sony X85J 4K HDR TV.
07:28 It used to be off-centered,
07:30 but now it's the centerpiece of the space
07:31 after repositioning the wall mount.
07:33 It's also now plugged directly
07:35 into its very own in-wall power outlet
07:38 installed behind the TV,
07:39 as opposed to passing the power cable behind the wall,
07:42 which, you know, actually might be against code.
07:45 I've also added an Xbox Series X to the room,
07:47 mainly to use the HDMI 2.1 inputs on this TV
07:50 for 120 frames per second 4K HDR gameplay.
07:53 And it also comes in handy for social gatherings.
07:56 There's also a Govee Wi-Fi LED TV backlight
07:59 installed behind the TV, which comes with a camera,
08:01 which you have to install on top or under the TV.
08:04 It then tries to mimic colors being shown on the TV,
08:06 amongst other features like setting up scenes,
08:09 schedules, app, and voice control.
08:11 Some people might not like RGB lights that much,
08:13 but this one increases the immersive feeling
08:16 from using the TV, I promise you.
08:18 The in-wall outlet is from Kasa,
08:19 and it can be controlled using voice assistants like Alexa
08:22 and Google Assistant, or through phone apps
08:25 like the Kasa Smart App.
08:27 I use the Smart feature to set up schedules
08:29 for when the TV or Govee light strip must turn off,
08:31 or to control the flow of power to them
08:34 using voice assistants at any time.
08:36 I'll also let you guys know right now
08:37 that it doesn't work with Apple's HomeKit or Siri,
08:40 but it does work with Amazon's Alexa
08:42 and Google's Assistant.
08:44 I've also got another Smart LED strip
08:46 installed under the floating cabinet,
08:48 and that can also be voiced and app controlled
08:49 using Alexa and Google's Assistant.
08:51 This one is generic, and I found it on Amazon as well.
08:54 It was very inexpensive and was a lot longer
08:56 than what I had there before,
08:58 so it really fit under there a lot nicer.
09:00 Alexa, turn off TV stand light.
09:03 - Okay.
09:06 - All the smart devices in the living room
09:08 coupled with a Sonos One 2nd Edition speaker
09:10 allows me to add Alexa voice control
09:12 for all of the devices in the living room.
09:14 The speakers are also great for playing music
09:16 while hanging out in the living room,
09:17 and also using stereo mode with another Sonos
09:20 in the kitchen.
09:21 Here's examples of some commands I use with it.
09:23 Alexa, turn on living room.
09:26 - Okay.
09:29 - Alexa, turn on big screen gaming setup.
09:35 - Okay.
09:37 (door closing)
09:40 - We've also added some decor pieces
09:43 like the black see-through flower vase on one side,
09:46 and a large floor vase to the other side
09:48 of the entertainment unit.
09:49 The floating cabinet is from Ikea,
09:50 and it's called a Besta wall-mounted cabinet combination
09:54 with white lap-vacant doors.
09:56 We picked up two sets,
09:57 which we needed for our four compartment build,
09:59 which we also did in the first video.
10:01 The goal was to create the cleanest look possible
10:03 for the entertainment center with no wires visible,
10:06 and I'm glad I was able to achieve that.
10:07 The newly added coffee table is called Evo,
10:09 and it's from Structube.
10:11 I fell in love with it as soon as I found
10:12 that the top side pulled up and towards me.
10:14 It's called a lift-top coffee table,
10:16 and it comes in white, black, or walnut.
10:18 We bought ours in white to complement the white TV cabinets
10:21 as well as the kitchen island top.
10:23 There's also a storage compartment below
10:24 when you pull the top side away,
10:26 as well as a single drawer for more storage.
10:28 We spray-painted the legs from silver to matte black
10:31 to align with the house aesthetic
10:33 of little to no chrome color anywhere.
10:35 The lamp we replaced the old Ikea one with
10:37 is called Northbrook from Structube as well.
10:40 We wanted something that was smaller
10:42 with a stylish look and a gold finish,
10:44 which would fit this space better,
10:45 and this was the one that fit that bill.
10:48 I used the same smart bulb I used with the old lamp,
10:50 so voice and app control was already set up,
10:52 and once again, I could control it with my Sonos.
10:55 The couch is a dressed-in modular sectional sofa
10:57 from Rove Concepts.
10:58 We had to pretty much wait six to eight months
11:00 to receive it, but that was between the end of last year
11:02 and early this year,
11:04 so maybe the shipping situation for the world
11:06 has improved by now.
11:07 It's a nice couch with a modern look and feel to it,
11:10 and I love the little walnut console you can add to it.
11:12 The rug in the living room is natural,
11:14 and it's called a Lalloy Haze Pebble from Rug & Weave.
11:18 We got ours in approximately eight by 10 inches.
11:20 There's other sizes as well.
11:21 It's got a multicolored neutral look
11:23 and a pattern that I believe works great
11:25 with walnut, gold, and matte black.
11:27 I feel like it adds a little bit of warmth to the space
11:29 and doesn't make it feel as cold as it felt before.
11:33 Above the couch, we've also added three art pieces
11:35 from Wayfair with very similar patterns.
11:37 They all have minimal geometric lines and circles,
11:40 gold finishes, and neutral colors to match the couch.
11:43 Mounting wasn't difficult,
11:44 but always make sure to do your calculations beforehand
11:47 to make sure they're straight and evenly spaced
11:49 for a professional look.
11:50 There's also the slat wall corner
11:52 with a 28-inch Mondo chair and side table,
11:55 which has now been discontinued at Urban Barn.
11:57 It doesn't take up much space,
11:58 but the thin metal armrests make it very uncomfortable
12:01 to use.
12:02 At Urban Barn, we also got a Bishop thrown caramel
12:04 with hints of ivory and blacks
12:06 to fit the aesthetic of the slat wall behind the chair.
12:09 It also means there's a cozy blanket
12:11 for us to use in the living room at all times.
12:13 To the right of the slat wall,
12:14 we've also added a picture and decor wall
12:16 to display important items or moments.
12:19 It's pretty empty right now,
12:20 but over time, we'll fill it up with great memories
12:23 and cool home decor items.
12:24 We mounted six Monslanta shelves from Ikea
12:26 and made sure to line everything up as best as we could
12:29 for a clean and seamless look.
12:30 The dining room table and chair are also from Roof Concepts,
12:33 and once again, colors like black, white, and walnut
12:36 were selected to add to the overall aesthetic
12:38 of the entire house.
12:40 We finished off the long wall with some greenery
12:42 from a large fake plant we picked up from ArtiPlanto.
12:46 There's a large treadmill behind the plant,
12:48 which is only there temporarily,
12:49 so the plant will end up being moved further back,
12:52 and there's going to be more space in that corner.
12:54 Overall, after adding the new pieces
12:56 and fixing some old issues,
12:58 the space already feels a lot better to spend time in,
13:01 and everything works together in perfect harmony.
13:03 I'm always on the lookout for better tech
13:04 and things that could help make the space even better,
13:07 but for now, I'm loving how everything turned out.
13:10 Alexa, turn off living room.
13:13 - Okay.
