Xijiebao Village is a thousand-year-old village on the Loess Plateau.
腊月二十三，村民们忙碌着准备过年。田氏家族兄弟们聚集在一起，商议过年村里的各项活动，双目失明的退休教师田老师在指导村里秧歌队和锣鼓队的排练。
On the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, the villagers are busy preparing for the coming Spring Festival. Brothers of the Tian family gather together, talking about the activities to be held in the village during the Spring Festival. Mr. Tian, a retired teacher who has lost the sight of both his eyes, is give guidance to the village’s yangge dance team and the gong and drum team in their rehearsal.
大年三十黄昏，留守儿童小狗蛋在村口等着爸爸妈妈回家过年；八十岁的独居老人田奶奶虔诚的恭送灶王爷上天；田老汉和老伴、小狗蛋围着炕桌吃着清冷的年夜饭；田老师和相依为命的儿子吃着简单的饭菜，老人唱起了传统戏曲碗碗腔。
At dusk on the last day of the twelfth lunar month, Goudan, a left-behind child, is waiting at the entrance to the village for his parents to come back home to spend the Spring Festival with him. Granny Tian, an eighty-year-old lady who lives alone, is reverently worshiping the Kitchen God. Old Man Tian, his wife and Goudan sit by the table on the kang table, having a quiet dinner. Mr. Tian and his son who keep each other company are having simple food. Then Mr. Tian is performing the Wanwanqiang Opera, a traditional local opera.
秧歌队锣鼓队挨家挨户给村里的老人拜年，村民们围坐在三堆大旺火边观看戏班唱戏。演出的是根据本村真人真事自编自演的“吕梁红梅”，讲述的是本村村民田新盛因伤致残，妻子十六年来无怨无悔孝敬年迈的公婆，照顾身残丈夫的感人故事。
The yangge dance team and the gong and drum team perform and pay a New Year call to the elderly of the village from house to house. The villagers sit around three Wanghuo (auspicious fires) watching the opera troupe perform. The performance “The Red Plum Tale of Luliang” scripted and starred by the villagers is adapted from a real story that happened in the village. It follows a touching story that Tian Xinsheng, a villager became disabled due to an injury, while his wife took care of his aged parents and him without complaint or regret over 16 years.
正月十五，村民们聚集在传承了600年的九曲黄河阵前祭拜祖先，敲锣打鼓唱着秧歌穿行其中，尽情地享受着年带给他们的快乐。
On the 15th day of the first lunar month, the villagers gather at the Nine-Bend Yellow River Array which has a history of 600 years to worship ancestors with offerings. With the performance of the gong and drum team and the yangge team, the villagers are enjoying the happiness the Spring Festival brings them.
年过完了，年轻人相继离家进城打工了，村口大槐树下是久久不愿离去的老人和孩子，古老的山村又恢复了往日的寂静。
After the Spring Festival, young people leave their homes to work in cities one after another. Under the big locust tree at the entrance to the village are the elderly and children who are seeing their families off and lingering and unwilling to leave. The ancient village becomes quiet again.
