This Day in History: , One World Trade Center
Officially Opens in NYC.
November 3, 2014.
Construction for the tower
where the former Twin Towers
stood began in 2006.
Following the 9/11 terrorist
attacks, a competition was
held to find a lead architect
for a new structure.
Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind won the competition. His vision of an asymmetrical tower wasn't realized, however.
Leaseholder Larry Silverstein employed his preferred architect, David Childs. Childs' design of a more traditional tower was also eventually changed.
Critics commented that the slow pace of construction allowed for a "sense of emblematic rebirth" to
become "more acute and irresistible.".
Today, tenants of One World Trade Center
include several major financial companies,
as well as media and tech companies
