In this series you will get acquainted with the Komodo monitor lizard, one of the most powerful predators, whose weight reaches 90 kg. But its ancestor, the megalania (lat. Megalania prisca or Varanus priscus or "giant butcher"), was even bigger. Megalania is the largest land lizard known to science, approximately 5 - 7 meters long and weighing about 400 kg. This species lived in Australia during the Pleistocene era. According to scientists, these lizards died out about 40 thousand years ago - exactly at the time when the first people arrived on the continent.
