We are frequently given misleading information about Islam, including the assertions that it is a violent religion and that its holy book serves as motivation for terrorists. Without having at least a basic understanding of the Qur'an, there is no way to evaluate these assertions.

What distinguishes the Qur'anic text from other holy texts? How has the book provoked challenges in Western and other cultures' attempts to interpret it?

Emeritus history professor Garry Wills teaches at Northwestern University. He is a historian and author who has won the Pulitzer Prize.
