This era of Disney feature animation was initiated in part thanks to a rivalry with one of their former employees. In 1979, Don Bluth and others left Disney and started their own studio. In 1986, Bluth collaborated with Steven Spielberg to release An American Tail, which competed that year against Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. For the rest of the '80s, Disney and Bluth continued their rivalry but by the start of the '90s, Disney came out on top.
