NBC reports that the record-breaking points came during the 20th season of his career in front of
a home crowd against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
James surpassed a milestone that stood for almost 39 years and was previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
With 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter, James broke the record with a fadeaway shot.
Following the shot, the crowd erupted, and the game was paused to celebrate James' achievement.
To commemorate the moment, Abdul-Jabbar handed James a basketball on the court and shook his hand.
