  • last year
Let's recap the brutal secret move of 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial that blindsided Argentine veteran Ruben 'Bebo' Villalba.
Good day boxing fans and welcome back to sports manda.
Surely, you have watched the highlights of the Marcial vs Villalba match over and over again.
The video flooded social media and it really got a lot of views.
But while I was watching the match, I saw the drastic improvement of our 27-year-old compatriot from Zamboanga City.

Let's break down the match.

Round 1 – Villalba immediately threw a right straight and looping left but it didn't hit because Marcial immediately took the right distance.
Not close, not far – just right to get away and counter.

Marcial also established his jabs early.
This is to show dominance inside the ring and also to set up his power punches.

Note Eumir Marcial's lead foot.
Whenever Marcial throws Jabs, he places his lead foot outside the opponent's lead foot.
This is to make his power punches heavier, whether to hit the body or the face.

We often see moves like this in Manny Pacman Pacquiao's fights.

Lead foot on the outside while throwing strong combinations.

Eumir also showed quick footwork.
Whenever Villalba attacks or feints, Marcial does a simple half-step back making Villalba frustrated.

But, this was Eumir Marcial's bread and butter in the match. Double right jab then left straight.

After throwing the second jab, Eumir hides his lead foot at the same time so that he can be positioned on the outside to connect his powerful left straight.

Inside the final 30 seconds of the first round – Marcial used a double jab then body shot – Villalba fell.

Marcial showed patience and let Villalba finish the first round.

Round 2 – Villalba suddenly became aggressive but Marcial kept his composure and was timing the opponent's rushes.

Marcial repeated the Double jab then left straight that landed, Villalba retreated.

Double jab again, this time, Villalba covered for a left straight but it was wrong because Marcial landed a right hook to the head to end the fight.

This is the reason why we often hear coaches shouting the instruction to double jab then straight.

This is to properly set up the right Angle to throw the killing blow.

And of course, it needs tons of practice and muscle memory, combined with fast hand and foot coordination to become an effective weapon.
Actually, the double jab then straight or cross is just a basic and not a secret move.
But if used correctly in the fight, the enemy is sure to be asleep.

Thank you very much for watching and God bless.
