The Key is a 1958 war/romance/drama film directed by Carol Reed, starring William Holden, Sophia Loren and Trevor Howard.

Plot: About a month before the United States enters the war (December 7, 1941), an American volunteer with general duties is assigned to command a tugboat based in Westport, on the British Western Approaches. The task consists in the search and towed recovery of abandoned freighters. An old friend will help him gain experience in what, at every outing at sea, is often a suicide mission due to the encounter with a German submarine regularly stationed near the merchant ship.
The commanders who followed one another usually stayed with a woman of Italian origin. Before setting sail for a risky recovery, the guests hand over the apartment key to a possible successor. In maintaining the continuity of succession, the woman fulfilled her role with a resignation continually alarmed by omens of doom.
