Bix Beiderbecke plays "In A Mist"
Recorded in New York on September 9, 1927
Originally released on Okeh 40916 though the Vocalion repressing pops up more often.
You thought Bix was known for his trumpet and cornet work?
He was also a pianist and composer, too.
Very modernistic chords!
Bix plays this solo differently from the standard transcription in print (which was annyoing to me when I tried to learn the piece using the old sheet music), but finally Dick Hyman notated it accurately for a revival of a dance choreographed by Twyla Tharp.
The transcription wound up in the 2006 Spring edition of Piano Today magazine.
Bix Beiderbecke died in his apartment on 46th Street in Sunnyside, Queens, on Thursday, August 6, 1931.
This is his only solo recorded work--he used uncharacteristic fingering and inventive harmonies.
This was an early taste of jazz to come? Hints of bebop and "cool" jazz?
