Maanas... in hindi stands for one's thoughts, mindset, nature. The protagonist Munna has his own thoughts towards the world, the god and towards his family. His character portrays the angry young man that is frustrated of poverty but can’t fight it positively. He steals and gambles and even threatens his younger brother to sell him. He is the dark face of the unprivileged world.
Chhotu, his brother, is another face of the world they belong to. He can’t speak but he conveys all the things by writing it on a slate. He studies by standing outside of the window of the classroom what his mother calls “Khidakiwaali padhaai.” Another skin of Chhotu’s character is like all children, he believes each and everything he is been said including his brother’s threat that he will sell him.
Aai, the mother of both, is the only earning member of the family. She is used to remind Munna his responsibility but Munna never listen to her until the day he makes his date with destiny. Film runs in timelines of three days of Diwali with few flashback moments. What are those circumstances that lead Munna to change his Mindset or we say “Maanas”. To know this, you got to see the film that conveys a message: No matter how tough it gets…, Life is to be lived…
