00:00In this video, I'm going to show you how I made this super cool floating TV stand
00:05no lags
00:07All for around a hundred bucks
00:10Alrighty guys to start I'm going to take three of these 4x4s. They're not pressure treated or anything
00:16I want my floating TV console to be about six foot long
00:21So I'm going to cut these down to about 74 inches just to leave them a little long so that I can cut the miters on
00:27them later
00:30You're going to want to set aside your cutoffs too because we're going to be using them
00:42Now what we're going to want to do is take these rounded edges off
00:46We really want to square these up
00:47So it's going to be a lot cleaner look in the end without these rounded edges
00:51It comes with right from the big-back store. Okay, so to knock the soft edges off of this
00:57I'm going to raise my blade up to about two inches and these are about three and a half inches
01:03So I want to take about a quarter inch off. You can usually go a little less maybe three sixteenths, but to make it easy
01:09I'm going to first set my fence to three and a quarter run them all through
01:14Okay
01:27Now we're going to want to take those same three boards
01:29So the side we caught will be up against the fence this time and then I'm going to change my fence to three inches
01:35And then run them through this way to take this curve that job
01:45Okay
01:49So now with one more eight foot four by four, we're gonna cut five pieces and 19 inches
02:02Okay, so now with these five pieces plus the three pieces
02:09Then we cut from these
02:11We're gonna do the same thing on the table saw to bring them to the three inches
02:22Okay, so I'm gonna start with putting the two sides of the TV console together
02:26What I'm going to do is run mine through my jointer just so it's a lot cleaner and comes together a lot better
02:33But these come plain drink from the store
02:35They're not the best but you could get by with just gluing it like this the finished product
02:40You might have some gaps to fill but if you don't have a jointer, you don't have a choice
02:45But I'm gonna run mine through just to clean it up. So these will come together like that a lot better
02:56All right, you guys say as you can see these have been ran through the jointer and it just
03:01Makes them come together a little cleaner. Okay. So now next up we have to cut the miters on these
03:08So to come up with what length you want to make yours
03:13I'm gonna take two of my long pieces and to pet depending on what you want to fit in between
03:18You're gonna want to measure that to make sure it's gonna fit in here. I
03:22Don't have much that's gonna go in here
03:24So and I kind of want a narrow look to mine so I might do about nine inches in between which would bring me
03:32To cut those miters to 15 inches so right here you can kind of just visualize and play around with
03:40What width you want?
03:47Okay, and then once you get them together like this you're gonna want to glue them up
03:51I'm gonna use my domino just to keep the alignment good
03:55You absolutely don't have to have it if you have a biscuit joiner
03:57You can use that if you have nothing at all just clamps and wood glue you can use that
04:07All right, now these next cuts is gonna be the length of your TV stand
04:12so I was originally gonna do 72 inches and I just went in and remeasured and
04:19I think I'm gonna knock it down to
04:2266 inches because it'll be a little more
04:25Fitting where I'm gonna put it so
04:28Whatever you want the length of yours
04:31Just make sure when you're cutting these miters
04:34Outside to the outside is what it's gonna be
04:39Once I got the stop block there
04:41Push it up against that and make this cut and I'm gonna do this on all three of the four by fours
04:46I have cut to this
04:49Okay
04:52Now with the four by fours cut you're gonna take just a regular two by four and do the same thing on that
05:03Okay, so our final two cuts are gonna be two
05:07two by eights point of the two by four material and two by eight material is to just save on weight because this is gonna
05:14Be a floating TV console. So it is gonna sit on the wall
05:18So you don't want it to be too crazy heavy. So now with these cut
05:22Cutting the two by eights is gonna be just a little different because we can't do it on the miter saw
05:27So I'm gonna set up to do it on the table saw. All right for this
05:30I'm gonna want to set my blade to 45 degrees
05:33So I'm gonna raise it up all the way
05:37Then I'm gonna use this to just make sure it's as close to 45 as possible. I
05:42Don't trust the gauge on my saw. So I just double check to make sure
05:48Perfect. I lock it in to make sure it doesn't go anywhere
05:57All right, you guys so on the four by four that's gonna be on top on the back
06:02We're gonna want to do something on the table saw
06:04So when we go to hang this as I've said
06:07It's gonna be a floating TV console and we're gonna hang it with a French cleat
06:11What we want to do is make a 45 cut here like this
06:16And then a straight cut down like that all this is gonna come out
06:20This will all be hidden when it's all put together. It all makes sense in the end. I promise
06:34Okay, so now you'll be able to better see what I was talking about so now this piece here gets mounted on the wall this
06:40way
06:41Then once it's all done this will fit right over it and hang on the wall
06:47It's super strong
06:48It's literally what I've done my whole shop in all my tool organizers and everything. They're all with French cleats
06:56I'm gonna take two by eight
06:58That's gonna be in the center like this then I'm gonna take one more four by four
07:04That's gonna be the front so it's gonna go together like that
07:11I
07:17Okay, so now I'm gonna go about gluing up the bottom so that one by eight it's gonna go there
07:22Or two by eight. I mean this two by four is gonna go here
07:25Remember when you're cutting these bottom pieces this bottom two by eight and this bottom two by four
07:32Make sure you're cutting it from the inside of the 45
07:36Earlier I was gonna cut it to the outside to match these but it's got to be on the inside because
07:43All this down here is gonna be hidden. This is to save weight. That's why we're using two by material
07:49So the side four by four is gonna come down and hide all this and when it's installed on the wall
07:55You're never gonna be able to see this
07:57So just make sure when you're cutting these two you cut it to the inner
08:0245 when you're measuring
08:06All
08:08Righty guys, I got all four parts glued up they sat overnight. I got the bottom set up on some sawhorses
08:16Now it's time to bring all four of these parts together and glue them up
08:20This is not the easiest glue up as it's four miter joints coming together. I got
08:26some ratchet straps here
08:29And I'm gonna try blowing all four up at once. I also did cut dominoes in on the
08:3645s just to help with alignment if you guys don't have a festool domino
08:39I might have to mock it all up with glue and then
08:43Maybe add some sort of decorative lag bolts in your style just to because miter joints are gonna need
08:50Reinforcement you can't just glue them up
08:59Alrighty, I don't know if you could tell through the time-lapse but that was quite a struggle to glue up
09:05But all in all the front miters, which was my main concern this is probably the worst one and
09:11That can easily be filled
09:14Rest of them went together
09:16Pretty damn good. So with a combination of the three ratchet straps, and I used four pipe clamps
09:23This one went across because I didn't have any long enough. I had to put two of them together
09:28But I think this is really gonna look good in the spot. I'm gonna put it
09:33So while that dries I got to move on to this thing which was actually the inspiration behind the stand I'm doing
09:42This is going to be a bathroom vanity that I made out of hand-hewn beams
09:49And that went together a lot like that one so but as you can see I got a
09:57Polish the epoxy next just to get a few dust nibs out of it, but
10:02That's what I'm gonna do now while that dries and then we'll move back to this tomorrow
10:10All righty guys now it's all together
10:11So what I'm gonna do now is just go over it all with 80 grit sandpaper to get rid of the dry glue
10:17And all that then I'm gonna do some distressing on it just to kind of give it a barnwood look a little more rustic
10:23approach to it
10:25I
10:28Already guys I touched up a couple of the miters that needed to be filled a little bit
10:32I'm just gonna give it a couple of just slight imperfections just to kind of give it a little bit of character
10:38I'm gonna screw some screws in and out just to
10:45Give it a couple like nail holes
10:47I'm gonna take my sawzall and just give it a couple little saw marks
11:07All righty guys now at this point before my final sanding I'm gonna stain it
11:12But first I'm gonna put on this pre-stained conditioner
11:15I don't want this to be too dark and this will help it not be blotchy
11:21And it'll also help not as much soak in so it won't be as dark and that's another reason
11:26I'm doing it doing this before my final sanding is because I want to
11:31Sand off a lot of it just to give it that worn look
11:34You'll see what I mean when I start doing it, but put this on first
11:45All
11:47Right and right after that I'm gonna immediately put on some special walnut stain really lightly put it on
11:53so all I want it is to
11:56Give it kind of a natural wood color and there's a little bit of color in the natural pine
12:02Four by fours are a lot redder than the two by eight. So I kind of want to blend that
12:07But I do not want to give it that
12:10deeply stained saturated look
12:13And another thing this is doing is kind of darkening up
12:19The little saw blade marks where I ran my table saw
12:24And this is kind of giving us exactly the look I want
12:32All right now I'm just gonna give it a really light sanding with 240 grit
12:38And I'm gonna pay more attention to the edges just to kind of give it a worn look
12:50All righty guys, so as far as finishing goes I'm gonna use this polycrylic it's a semi-gloss
12:56I'm gonna just spray it with my
12:59great gold 360 DSP
13:02This I'm just gonna be using this because this is just what I had laying around
13:07I
13:37Hope you guys enjoyed!
