This person showed how they renovated a staircase and added cable railings. After the demolition, they ripped the old carpet padding, filled any cracks or gaps, and painted the staircase. Then, they secured a new jute runner using nails and tape and finished.

00:00 The original design of the house had a half wall around the staircase which interrupted
00:05 the open concept flow that I wanted.
00:08 On the kitchen side, there were useful cabinets and countertop space but it was definitely
00:12 worth the sacrifice for the outcome.
00:15 The first time that I painted, I painted the main floor light gray to brighten it up.
00:19 You can see the dark color it was below the cabinets.
00:22 And now it was time for the demolition process to begin.
00:26 As you can see, there were a lot of wires that needed to be moved.
00:29 This is the only part of the project that we used a professional for.
00:33 We hired a local electrician to relocate all of the wiring and then it was time for the
00:37 rest of the wall to come down.

01:05 We needed to fill in the flooring that was missing and make it blend seamlessly.
01:10 After much research on the railing, I found a guy in Minneapolis who does custom railings.
01:15 I gave him my measurements and he shipped the parts out to us.
01:19 My husband and I installed it ourselves and we only had an eighth of an inch that we could
01:23 be off by so it definitely took some precision.
01:26 And here's what it looked like halfway through the process.
01:31 Now on to the second part.
01:33 The steps were covered with a standard gray carpet.
01:36 And yes, it was all wrapped up around the stringer that runs down each side of the staircase.
01:42 I ripped that off and we were left with carpet pad, tons of staples, and wood that was in
01:47 really tough shape with lots of cracks and gaps.
01:51 After pulling all of the thousands of staples, I filled all the holes with wood filler.
01:56 I put down trim running the length of the staircase and filled out the cracks and gaps
02:00 with a paintable caulk for a seamless look.
02:03 Then I trimmed out all of the paint with a brush and went back and rolled the rest.
02:24 This carpet tape was a lifesaver to hold my runner down in place until I could nail it.
02:29 First place the sticky side down, cut, and peel off the protective layer.
02:37 Then I went back and nailed it all down with my brad nailer to make sure it was tight and
02:41 secure.
02:59 You can see how caulking made such a difference in the completed look.
03:03 I couldn't decide on what I was going to do for a runner.
03:05 I didn't want anything too dark or too light and it needed to have some grip to it and
03:09 match the carpet below.
03:11 After spending much time searching, I found the perfect thing to do for a runner.
03:15 It was a beautiful natural fiber jute runner.
03:17 And it was the perfect color.
03:38 Here is the finished product.
04:04 Thanks for watching.
04:26 Bye.
