00:00 And the way he's man-managed his team,
00:02 you know, guys like Man in Liverpool,
00:04 he certainly turned around into world beaters.
00:06 It just seems like a very happy team, the Stormers team.
00:09 And that's why coaching is so important
00:12 when it comes to how you actually, you know,
00:14 working with individuals, knowing what's best for them,
00:17 knowing what, you know, how to get them
00:20 in the right frame of mind.
00:21 Because these are players like normal human beings,
00:24 you know, they're not always in the best of moods.
00:26 Sometimes as well, when something personal at home happened,
00:29 whatever the case may be.
00:30 So John Dobson, I feel, has managed it so well,
00:33 you know, for the Stormers team.
00:34 And he certainly brought a unity together from this team.
00:38 Their motto, making Cape Town smile,
00:40 he certainly done it and went beyond.
00:42 And for me, you know, I have to take my hat off to him
00:45 for getting this right.
00:46 It's not always easy.
00:46 We know the stresses of a coach.
00:48 We know the hard work these guys must put in.
00:50 And always, things are not gonna go your way all the time.
00:53 There are gonna be difficult times in a season,
00:56 but John Dobson and his management team,
00:58 certainly, you know, they stayed calm.
00:59 They took the pressure off of the team
01:02 and certainly getting the best out of the team when needed.
01:05 - Shanks, for you, that second half,
01:07 the next nine matches,
01:08 where did you feel that the Stormers are back?
01:11 - I think it was the Sharks away win, I think in February.
01:14 I think if you look at their season from there,
01:16 they've only lost two games in all competitions since.
01:19 And you mentioned it about the set piece.
01:21 It started to function in the second part of the season.
01:24 When you set piece functions, you can launch attacks.
01:26 We know the Stormers are great off first phase.
01:28 They're great at scoring drives with limited phases.
01:31 And what they do well, they started to win the game like.
01:34 So they're only, a lot of time, you watch them today,
01:36 they only have one person in that ruck
01:38 because they're winning that game like that.
01:39 They don't need many more,
01:40 which means you've got 13 other players
01:42 that are a threat around the field.
01:44 So they started to get it right.
01:46 And I think after that win against the Sharks,
01:48 then it's just momentum.
01:50 It's just momentum, it's confidence,
01:52 and it's about peaking at the right time.
01:53 You don't need to peak at the start of the season.
01:56 You hope you can, you want to start the season well.
01:58 But it's when you get to the business end,
02:00 sort of just after Christmas and towards now,
02:04 is when you really want to be starting
02:06 to hit in those moves and those drives.
02:09 - Guys, but how's the contrast between these two coaches?
02:11 You've got Graham Rowntree, he'll make a great poker player.
02:13 I'm unsure of the hamsters running inside him,
02:15 but he's so calm and measured and considerate
02:17 in the way he goes about explaining
02:19 and picking out his season.
02:21 Dobbo's all energy and nervous energy.
02:23 You'll never be in doubt how Dobbo is feeling.
02:25 We just saw him next to the field there.
02:27 You're talking to Norman Lake, the defense coach.
02:30 Our defense has been outstanding this year.
02:32 And it's just how we get off the line.
02:34 We don't stop.
02:35 You know, so often you see sides going once or twice,
02:37 coming off the line, but they don't push through.
02:39 This former side will push through and go fetch you
02:41 10, 15, 20 meters behind the game line.
02:44 Does get them in trouble sometimes,
02:46 and that's where they rely on their work rate
02:48 and they scramble.
02:49 That's fascinating, listening to these coaches
02:51 going through the season.
02:52 The one seems a lot more emotional,
02:53 like emotional roller coaster than the others.
02:55 - Yeah, it certainly is.
02:57 But they found their balance, Scala.
02:59 Are they getting it right, though,
03:00 between the URC and the other competition,
03:02 the Heineken Champions Cup,
03:04 which has come in more for South African teams
03:05 and has been quite the learning curve this year?
03:08 - I think our fear was always going into Champions Cup
03:10 this year is that how do we manage our squads.
03:13 You know, we got a Curry Cup that runs parallel
03:15 with the URC, so we're always gonna lack the depth,
03:18 I think, to be competitive on both fronts.
03:20 And the Stormers, I think, found that out the hard way
03:22 by getting a weight qualification,
03:24 playing against Exeter.
03:26 Then the man that was just on screen, Dion Faree,
03:28 was out for a couple of weeks during that time.
03:29 Also, coincided with our loss against Munster.
03:33 And if he's playing, we're a different animal on the ground.
03:35 You know, he's so, so competitive.
03:37 Namat Kaba has been injured for most of the season.
03:39 He's the guy who sits behind him,
03:41 who's also got a bright future.
03:42 But at the moment, far ahead of the rest.
03:45 If you wanna fetch, you want the Stormers to turn over ball
03:47 and play with a transition play.
03:49 You need to have Dion Faree.
03:51 So, I think a blessing in disguise
03:53 for all our South African sides.
03:54 I know the Sharks went hard at the Champions Cup
03:57 'cause they weren't as good in the URC.
04:00 Once we fell out of that competition,
04:02 we could refocus ourselves to,
04:03 okay, we've got one job to do.
04:05 How do we get that done?
04:06 It was a much simpler task.
04:08 And also, to manage those squads.
04:09 Could you get a couple of weekends to boot?
04:12 - Shens, for you, where do you feel
04:14 that the Stormer side is getting it right?
04:17 And also, how do they continue on that trajectory
04:20 to not only win more trophies,
04:22 but be competitive all the time?
04:24 - It's first phase attack, I think.
04:25 They're really good launch plays.
04:26 And that is a lot down to Manny Labotte
04:28 because he's a multi-threat all over the park,
04:31 whether it's his kicking game, his passing game,
04:32 his running game.
04:33 And when you've got a 10 that's got pace like he has,
04:35 when he makes the breaks, he pulls away from defenders.
04:38 So, they're getting it right there.
04:40 I think as well, we mentioned there,
04:41 Set Piece has got a lot better,
04:44 which you do need to launch attacks.
04:47 So, they're peaking right at the right time now.
04:50 And there's other players as well.
04:52 I think Marvin Ory coming in at the line out.
04:55 That struggled against Conor.
04:57 And it's such a massive part of the game.
04:59 So, the Stormers, they're good.
05:01 There are a few weaknesses there, though.
05:03 You know, they're not the finished article.
05:04 They do tend to overplay a little bit.
05:06 And they do concede tries.
05:08 But if you want to watch a team score,
05:10 and you want to see tries,
05:11 and you want to see launch plays and exciting rugby,
05:14 you won't get a better team than this to watch.
05:15 - We need to also speak about the unsung heroes, Kalki.
05:18 Frans Malherbe, Josef Dwebber, and Steven Kutsov.
05:22 Can you imagine, for some reason,
05:23 if Steven Kutsov, for instance,
05:25 had an injury during the season?
05:26 You know, these guys are incredibly fit,
05:28 and they really look well after their bodies.
05:30 His leadership has been fantastic.
05:32 He's been phenomenal.
05:33 He's just a calm man.
05:34 And he doesn't talk a lot.
05:36 You know, he actually does his talking on the field,
05:38 and it's a sign of a wonderful character in person.
05:41 I tell you what, he's gonna be missed
05:43 by the people of Cape Town,
05:44 and especially Stormers fans.
05:46 But Frans Malherbe, for me,
05:47 has been the guy of the season.
05:49 You know, he's good in the hard work,
05:51 he hits those rucks.
05:52 He just do all the dirty work
05:55 for the likes of Angelo Davidson,
05:56 Leroy Lindsas, and Damien Valenza to go and score tries.
05:59 - And hopefully we're gonna see them firing as well.
06:01 But Spenser, that's what the classic commentators call him,
06:04 and he's certainly firing from all cylinders,
06:06 isn't he, Frans Malherbe?
06:07 But this is a team that won it last season.
06:09 They were a quality outfit,
06:10 second on the table, walking away with the title,
06:13 and they certainly did it the Stormers way.
06:15 - A deluge of disappointing performances.
06:24 Dark clouds descended over Cape Town,
06:27 and the critics didn't hold back.
06:29 Off-field struggles compounded the stormy mood.
06:34 - Well, it's been a turbulent few months off the field,
06:36 and this kicked ahead this week
06:38 as the Western Province Union,
06:39 who effectively own the Stormers,
06:41 was put into administration.
06:43 - Rock bottom was beckoning.
06:46 - Look, we're pretty disappointed
06:47 with our performance tonight,
06:48 so we didn't play well, you know,
06:50 so we didn't deserve to win this one.
06:54 - It's kind of the same story every time,
06:55 but at least today we started well.
06:57 You know, we can't keep on making the same mistakes every week.
06:59 And you know, we can't keep on saying,
07:01 like, we're gonna learn, we're gonna learn.
07:03 I mean, we don't have much time,
07:04 but you know what, I'm proud of the way we started,
07:07 but yeah, we have to get it together now.
07:10 - But a change of heart, personnel,
07:12 approach, and of resolve let a chink of light in.
07:16 - Pushes it through, and Zass is over.
07:23 And the Stormers deserve that try.
07:26 And the Stormers have won in Rodney Parade.
07:31 - You must be absolutely delighted with that win.
07:33 - Yeah, we are very relieved.
07:35 You know, going home as the only South African team
07:36 without a win would have been disastrous,
07:38 so it's a massive relief for us.
07:39 - Spirits were lifted, and the results soon followed.
07:43 - Gelant with a beautiful drifting pass for Dion Ferry,
07:47 and Sanatler away to his right.
07:49 Sanatler, and inside for Rouen now.
07:53 It's a brilliant score for the Stormers.
07:57 - I say a lot of credit to our boys,
07:58 and we're stuck in there,
07:59 even though it was quite tight at halftime.
08:01 I think the boys just realized how important this game is
08:04 and kept on fighting the pressure.
08:06 - And with those results came belief.
08:09 - The Stormers going to the last four.
08:11 They'll be facing Ulster next week at home,
08:13 and the faithful will be out once again.
08:15 - And belief is everything.
08:17 - The leading points scorer
08:21 in the United Rugby Championship
08:23 has this kick for the Stormers to host the final.
08:27 He's struck it beautifully.
08:31 It's over!
08:33 Absolutely incredible scenes.
08:38 - 11 victories on the trot,
08:40 and a remarkable turnaround was almost complete.
08:44 Just one final hurdle remained.
08:46 - Damien Willemsen
08:48 kicks the ball into the stands.
08:51 The DHL Stormers
08:54 are the inaugural United Rugby Championship
08:59 grand final winners.
09:02 - Storming to victory, not only then,
09:05 but continuing that momentum into a new season.
09:09 Riding the wave of success,
09:11 six wins from six local derbies
09:13 meant the SA shield had been secured once again.
09:16 - The defending champions of the competition
09:20 are defeated against any South African opposition.
09:25 - Putting a smile back on the face of Cape Tonians,
09:28 the feel-good factor is spreading.
09:30 - This becomes family.
09:31 And we've, I mean, I've been here for a number of years now.
09:34 And it's not just the team
09:36 or this elite big name you're playing for.
09:39 It is someone that you see day in, day out.
09:41 They're your brothers.
09:42 They are like family.
09:45 We're all in tight units.
09:46 It is an honor for me to wear this badge,
09:50 to sit alongside, you know,
09:54 celebrities, to work with them, to call them friend.
09:58 It's hard to sometimes, for me, to fathom
10:02 that I had a part in that.
10:03 It seems so small, the part that I had to play in that,
10:08 but yet it's also big.
10:10 It's big.
10:12 - From the depths of despair to the mountaintop pinnacle.
10:16 (whistle blows)
10:17 - How I pity the fool who steps in the way of Joseph Dweba,
10:21 with that look in his eye.
10:23 - The stormers have risen again.
10:26 - They stay patient on attack
10:28 and ultimately get their reward.
10:30 It is another piece of silverware,
10:33 which is a proud moment for the team,
10:36 but they've got a much bigger objective.
10:39 (crowd cheering)
10:42 - Yeah, it's been quite an astonishing turnaround
10:53 in fortunes for the stormers, for the misery.
10:55 They seem to be in just a few years ago, John,
10:58 and now they're on the verge of back-to-back titles
11:01 here in the URC.
11:03 What do you put it down to?
11:05 - Look, I think the man that we spoken to earlier
11:08 and that was on screen quite a few times now, John Dobson,
11:11 has played an integral role
11:13 in what this organisation is today.
11:16 And I was actually speaking to him earlier today
11:18 and some messages that we shared probably four,
11:21 five years ago, and just the struggles and the troubles
11:24 that this organisation had, and some of it still has.
11:28 But the fact that they were able to bring a team together,
11:31 contact guys that really believes in the project
11:34 that they have and where they wanna go as a group,
11:37 what they wanna achieve in the broader Cape Town,
11:40 and I suppose South Africa,
11:42 and then being able to display that by playing rugby.
11:46 That is something special.
11:47 It takes a special character to be able to do that.
11:50 And Dovo's done that with this team,
11:52 and you can just see it.
11:53 It's a happy group.
11:54 It's a great culture that they have going,
11:57 and they've really nailed down the way
11:58 that they wanna play,
11:59 the brand of rugby that they wanna play.
12:01 And it's a brand that these fans can really associate with.
12:05 - Back to today's game, Ben Allen.
12:07 I'm sure you'll tell me the breakdown
12:08 is always the most important area of the game.
12:10 And today, Dion Furi is back for the Stormers.
12:13 The guys in studio are gonna talk through their team
12:16 in a little bit.
12:17 But in Tideburn, Munster have a Jackler extraordinaire.
12:21 That battle on the floor could be critical
12:23 to deciding the outcome of this game.
12:25 - Yeah, people are a little bit surprised
12:26 as OG Snowman has not started the game.
12:29 But I think not just Tideburn,
12:31 but John Hottnett has been really good
12:33 for Munster in recent times.
12:35 He didn't play here a number of weeks back,
12:38 but he's been brilliant the last few weeks.
12:40 His connection with backs and forwards,
12:42 his ability on the breakdown again.
12:44 And Munster are very aware of Dion Furi.
12:47 He's superb at that breakdown.
12:49 It's an area where they've been pretty good
12:50 the last few weeks, winning turnovers,
12:53 but also protecting their own ball.
12:55 And you know, we've seen Tideburn so many times
12:57 over the years, that blue skunk cap.
13:00 You know, his ability to get in on the ball.
13:03 And John Dobson and Graham Rowntree spoke about this.
13:06 The contact area is gonna be really crucial.
13:09 Getting your body position right.
13:11 Doing it legally, keeping your discipline,
13:13 because that's gonna be really important.
13:15 But that breakdown is just gonna be unbelievable today.
13:18 - Yeah, it's gonna be unbelievable, the breakdown.
13:20 It's unbelievable here.
13:20 It is so raucous now here in the Cape Town Stadium.
13:24 And it's only gonna get louder and more exciting
13:26 the closer to kickoff we come.
13:28 It's not too far away now,
13:30 and we can hear from the captain of Munster.
13:32 Peter Omani is with Cobus VISA.
13:34 - Peter, welcome back to South Africa.
13:37 It's the final.
13:38 It's the one every player has been participating
13:41 in this competition.
13:42 What do you guys expect from today?
13:43 - Loco, we expect the biggest game of the year
13:48 against arguably the best team in the competition
13:51 at home in their own backyard.
13:53 So look, it's gonna be a huge test for us.
13:57 - You guys are showing against Leinster,
13:58 away from home, that you can absorb pressure,
14:00 you can handle pressure,
14:01 and that's what finals is really about.
14:03 The team that absorbs the pressure the best.
14:06 - Yeah, look, we've spoken about calmness,
14:08 and we've spoken about being under pressure today, 100%.
14:12 Spoken about probably being under our sticks at some point.
14:17 But being calm at the same time,
14:18 and navigating our way through issues,
14:20 and staying on top of ourselves, and we're going well.
14:24 So look, it's gonna be a big day for everyone,
14:26 and it's gonna be a huge challenge.
14:28 - You guys have seen the Stormers' teams
14:30 throughout the season.
14:31 What do you expect from them today?
14:33 - Look, I think they've shown their class
14:34 over the span of this whole competition this year.
14:38 I suppose the variety in their game,
14:42 with the way they can play wide,
14:44 but with the dynamic pack they have,
14:47 their mauling game is obviously very strong.
14:50 I think in particular their counter-attacking game.
14:53 We know if we cough up ball today
14:57 that we're gonna have to be really good defensively
15:00 when that ball gets billed
15:01 to stop these guys from scoring.
15:03 But yeah, look confident.
15:06 - Good luck for the game.
15:07 - Thank you very much.
15:08 - Thanks, Rupert.
15:09 - Okay, let's have a look then
15:11 at that full Munster lineup here today.
15:13 They've made three changes from the side
15:16 that defeated Leinster in the semifinal
15:18 of the Aviva Stadium.
15:19 The hugely experienced Colin Murray is back.
15:22 We heard from him a little earlier.
15:23 One of just two survivors in that Munster 23
15:26 from the team that last lifted the trophy
15:28 way back in 2011.
15:30 Former All Black Malakai Feketoa and Calvin Nash
15:33 also returned to the back line.
15:34 And the drop goal hero from a fortnight ago,
15:36 Jack Crowley, moves from 12 to 10
15:39 to accommodate that new midfielder.
15:41 RJ Snyman, as Alan mentioned earlier,
15:44 is fit and back in the 23,
15:46 but has to settle for a place on the replacements bench, Alan.
15:49 But looking at that 23, that starting 15,
15:52 that's about as strong as a Munster side you could hope for.
15:55 - It is, yeah.
15:56 I think there's still one or two other players,
15:58 injured, younger players,
16:00 guys who may not necessarily have started.
16:02 But on paper, yes, it's right up there
16:04 with the strongest side they've had.
16:06 As I said, Snyman being on the bench.
16:10 Some people are divided on that,
16:11 that maybe he should have started.
16:13 But, you know, I trust the coaches.
16:15 I think Mike Prendergast, he looks after a lot of the attack.
16:18 Of course, Andy Kiriakou, the forwards coach,
16:20 would have been ultimately probably his decision
16:22 and the balance of that forward pack.
16:24 The pressure they're gonna come under at scrum time,
16:27 which I'm sure we'll talk about,
16:29 and maybe the guys in the studio will,
16:31 it's really important.
16:32 So maybe RJ Snyman, that extra weight and size.
16:36 But they've picked him on the bench.
16:38 They've developed a plan.
16:39 As I said, Hodnet plays in that back row.
16:42 It's a very strong monster side.
16:44 It's a side that they have a bit of continuity.
16:47 Having Fekete and John Lennon better back at 12
16:49 is big for him as well.
16:51 - Yeah, I want to talk to you about the midfield combination,
16:53 but specifically about 10, John,
16:54 'cause we talked about Crowley earlier,
16:56 how he is a big star of the future.
16:58 But that would have been a really tough call
17:01 for Graeme Randrew to make,
17:02 because Ben Healy started the semifinal
17:03 and he started it really well.
17:05 - Yeah, look, but I think you select your best team.
17:08 So Crowley is the best flav,
17:09 and you want your best flav to be playing.
17:11 You get a guy like Malakai Feketewa coming in as well,
17:14 who's an international player,
17:15 and suddenly it's a pretty strong midfield that four monsters.
17:19 So Crowley, massive player for them.
17:23 - Absolutely massive.
17:24 It's bizarre that we're not even talking about Joey Carberry
17:27 when we're talking about the fly-off debate.
17:28 He has fallen way down the packing order into third place.
17:32 Okay, I think we can hear from Steven Kitsoff now.
17:34 The Stormers captain has also been speaking to Cobus.
17:38 - Steven, big game today, to say the least.
17:41 It's the final, you guys are the defending champions.
17:43 Is there a bit of pressure on you, Ox?
17:45 - No, 100% Cobus.
17:45 I think big occasion, 55,000 Cape Town supporters,
17:49 or Stormers supporters.
17:51 It's an unbelievable atmosphere out there.
17:52 So there's a lot of pressure
17:54 and you can start feeling the pressure building.
17:56 - Besides the normal emotions out there,
17:57 it's special for you today.
17:58 It's your last game in the beloved Stormers jersey
18:01 before you go abroad.
18:03 So today, you know, the win will do you well.
18:07 - Yeah, Cobus, but it's gonna be rugby first.
18:10 80 or 100 minutes of rugby,
18:11 and then the emotions can come afterwards.
18:14 But yeah, for me, it's all about just focusing on the game,
18:17 focusing on my task, my job for today,
18:19 and hopefully getting the win for the boys.
18:22 - Obviously making the right calls in a final
18:23 counts a lot of points, but the team that absorbs pressure,
18:26 and this Munster side have shown,
18:27 they can play under pressure.
18:29 - No, 100%.
18:30 Munster have shown in the last couple of weeks,
18:31 they thrive under pressure and they actually back their
18:34 systems and they defence and they attack to actually
18:37 get territory and play in the right areas.
18:40 But yeah, as you said, it's all about absorbing that
18:42 pressure, how much pressure you can exceed,
18:44 and then eventually the cracks will come.
18:46 But yeah, I think it's gonna come down to the wire
18:49 and it's gonna be a brilliant game of rugby.
18:52 - Hope it's a special day for you and the team.
18:53 - Thanks, Cobus, appreciate it.
18:55 - Let's take a look at how the Stormers
18:59 will be lining up for today.
19:00 Two changes that have been made, all in the pack.
19:03 Dion Ferree returns as well as Marvin Arie replacing
19:06 Vili Engelbrecht as well as BJ Dixon.
19:09 Two new faces in this team compared to last year's
19:12 finals team in Joseph Dwebber and Ruben van Yeerden.
19:15 They were not in the side at that time,
19:17 but what a quality outfit that's gonna take on
19:20 Munster tonight.
19:21 Look at that team, your thoughts on that, Brace.
19:24 - Yeah, it's a solid team and it's so good to see
19:26 Dion Ferree back.
19:28 He was sorely missed when he wasn't able to play
19:30 and he makes such a big difference.
19:31 His impact on the field certainly lifts the guys
19:34 around him as well.
19:35 So I do feel that he's a big, big plus in today's game
19:38 and especially the way the Stormers play.
19:40 - I like the team.
19:41 I mean, the team complements itself.
19:44 You know, they're not trying to be anything different.
19:45 They've got an identity of how they wanna play.
19:48 You look at Le Boc at 10, you look at the centres
19:50 that go alongside him.
19:51 They pair up really well.
19:53 The back three's electric, a great back row.
19:56 But the DNA is in the Stormers to play.
19:59 I just wonder, because it's a final,
20:01 are they gonna play the same way?
20:03 If points are on the board, are they gonna take it?
20:04 Are they gonna kick the touch?
20:06 Because we saw what happened last week
20:07 against Leinster and Munster.
20:10 And Leinster sort of fell into that trap a little bit
20:12 and Munster just swallowed them up.
20:13 So, but that Stormers T1 paper,
20:16 I mean, it's hard to look past that.
20:18 - Yeah, I love the Stormers side.
20:21 There's so much firepower, you know,
20:22 contrary to, you know, the Munster side
20:24 that basically camped in that Leinster half.
20:27 What's it, 12 minutes they spent in the 22?
20:30 They battled to score points.
20:31 The Stormers side, against Conrad,
20:33 they basically had 33% of the position, scored six tries.
20:37 There's so much talent and firepower within this team.
20:40 Also, nice to have Marvin Ory back.
20:42 Our line-up was functioning in the low 70s.
20:44 Yes, we had to make a makeshift plan in there.
20:48 Beautiful side to pick for us.
20:49 And, you know, the main thing for me is intensity.
