The lowland paca (Cuniculus paca) is a large rodent that inhabits the forests of Central and South America. They are about the size of a small dog, weighing between 4 and 13 kg (9 to 29 pounds) and measuring between 60 to 80 cm (24 to 31 inches) in length.
Their fur is short and thick, ranging from reddish-brown to black, with a distinctive white or cream-colored spot on their throat, chest, and underbelly. They have large, rounded ears and a short, hairless tail.
Lowland pacas are primarily nocturnal, spending their days hiding in burrows or crevices in the forest floor. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, fruits, and seeds, and are known to hoard food in their burrows for later consumption.
They are solitary animals, except during the breeding season, which lasts from January to June. Females give birth to litters of one to three young after a gestation period of around 120 days.
Due to habitat loss and hunting, lowland pacas are considered a vulnerable species. However, they are also kept in captivity for their meat and as pets.
