00:02 Lizard, lizard, lizard, right there,
00:12 right there, right there, right there.
00:13 Sees us.
00:15 Okay, if it darts, I'm just going after it,
00:17 so follow after me, watch out for these logs here.
00:19 Did it?
00:24 Got it, nice!

00:32 The Australian outback can truly be hailed
00:41 as one of the most iconic landscapes on the planet.
00:43 And visiting this location had long been a dream
00:48 for the Brave Wilderness team.
00:49 This vast expanse of open grasslands and arid terrain
00:54 is home to a plethora of reptilian species,
00:57 many of which we hope to get up close for the cameras.
01:01 So to have the best chance of finding them,
01:05 we traveled far beyond the city limits
01:07 of bustling civilization and headed westward
01:10 toward the tiny rural town of Meandara.
01:13 Exploring the outback requires a bit of experience,
01:18 so we teamed up with animal specialists,
01:21 Lockie Gilding and Max Jackson,
01:23 who own and operate Australian Wildlife Encounters.
01:27 Working under their special permits,
01:29 we will be spending peak daylight hours
01:32 driving the countryside in search
01:34 of ideal habitats to explore.
01:35 Once a viable location was established,
01:40 the goal was to break trail into the great unknown
01:42 and begin our search for any species
01:44 that could be safely presented in front of the cameras.
01:48 Guys, so right now we are out exploring
01:50 in some bat country.
01:52 This is officially the Australian bush,
01:55 and it's very disorienting.
01:57 I spin in a circle like this,
02:01 and I bet it looks the same in every direction.
02:05 All right, I'm disorienting myself.
02:07 I know that I came, though, from that direction,
02:09 so I'm gonna head back and meet up with the crew.
02:11 The bush, as it is so iconically known in Australia,
02:18 refers to any sparsely inhabited region,
02:21 regardless of vegetation type.
02:23 And given the fact that we were well over 300 miles away
02:25 from any major city, this wilderness
02:28 could definitely be considered true Australian bush.
02:32 Look at that.
02:36 That's a wild pig skull right there.
02:40 Now, these hogs are feral here in Australia.
02:43 And I tell you what, you do not wanna run
02:44 into one of these out there in the bush.
02:47 Those tusks will do a number on you.
02:50 Wow, pretty cool find, wish we could keep it,
02:52 but it's gonna stay here in the environment.
02:55 All right, let's keep going that direction.
02:57 Deep within the brambles,
03:00 it would be nearly impossible to find,
03:03 let alone pursue, any fast-moving reptile.
03:06 So we made our way toward a clearing,
03:08 when all of a sudden, we came upon
03:10 one of Australia's most common, yet iconic lizard species.
03:14 Lizard, lizard, lizard, right there,
03:15 right there, right there, right there.
03:17 - I don't see it.
03:18 - It's right there on that wall.
03:19 - I got it, I got it.
03:20 - I think it's a bearded dragon,
03:21 but it's really dark in color.
03:23 - Okay, come up slow.
03:24 Mario, see if you can zoom in and get a shot on it.
03:25 - Got it, it is a bearded.
03:26 - Wow, it's a lot darker than I thought they'd be.
03:28 Okay, come on, go slow, slow, slow.
03:30 Oh, oh, oh, it sees us.
03:34 Okay, if it darts, I'm just going after it,
03:36 so follow after me, watch out for these logs here.
03:38 - Get it? - Got it.
03:46 - Nice. - Woo-hoo-hoo!
03:47 It barely even moved, it was like perfectly camouflaged,
03:50 and it just said, "Okay, you can't see me."
03:53 I'll tell you what, I did see you.
03:55 That is a bearded dragon right there.
03:57 Whoa, whoa, calm down there, buddy.
03:59 Wow. - A little spiky.
04:00 - It is super spiky.
04:01 Okay, very stark lighting right here.
04:03 Let's kind of duck down into the shade.
04:05 I think that'll be better for your cameras,
04:07 and let's get this lizard up close for the cameras.
04:10 Oh man, first lizard of the trip, this is awesome.
04:13 Woo!
04:14 Watch your footing through here, guys.
04:16 All right, here's a good shady spot up here.
04:18 Let's hunker down and film this scene.
04:20 There it is, guys, the eastern bearded dragon.
04:28 Now let's talk about where this lizard gets its name,
04:31 the bearded dragon, and let me see.
04:34 All right, buddy, can you kind of flare up your beard for us?
04:36 Actually staying really calm.
04:37 As you'll notice, the temperature, well, you guys
04:39 can't notice, but what we're noticing is that the sun
04:40 is very hot, but the temperatures are still very cool
04:43 in the air, and like all reptiles,
04:45 this one is ectothermic, which means they're using the sun
04:48 to heat up their bodies so they can head out
04:50 and hunt for the day, and the bearded dragon
04:52 is a diurnal species.
04:54 There is the central variety and the eastern variety,
04:57 and the big difference there is that the eastern variety
04:59 is much darker in coloration, and the interior
05:02 of the mouth is yellow as compared to pink.
05:05 All right, buddy, can we see that beard?
05:07 You guys wanna see that beard, right?
05:08 - Oh yeah.
05:10 - All right, let's see if I can kind of tickle his chin.
05:12 Oh, starting to puff up his body a little bit there.
05:15 Puff out that beard for us.
05:16 I stand actually really calm.
05:18 Look at that, I'm not even applying any pressure
05:20 holding onto the body.
05:22 It's just chilling out on my hand right now.
05:24 Okay, you can kind of see the beard there.
05:26 Look right underneath the chin.
05:28 Now, when they're really aggravated,
05:29 they will puff up their bodies and puff up that beard,
05:32 open up their mouth, and display that yellow interior color.
05:35 Now, in a sense, that's aposematic coloration.
05:38 They are not venomous, but that bright color
05:40 and that (hissing) sort of display oftentimes
05:43 will ward off any potential predators.
05:45 Now, when I do touch the beard,
05:47 it's a bit softer than the very rough, spiny scales
05:52 on the back of this lizard.
05:54 Wow, I cannot believe how calm it's being.
05:57 Oh, now it's trying to take off.
05:58 There we go, there you go.
05:59 Now you got the beard puffed out.
06:00 Wow, that is one impressive beard, sir.
06:04 I think you could probably win a beard-growing contest.
06:09 And you'll notice the very triangular shape
06:11 of this lizard's head.
06:13 That's one feature that distinguishes it
06:14 from many of the lizard species here in Australia.
06:18 And oftentimes, you'll see 'em like that,
06:21 just perched on the side of a tree,
06:23 facing downward with that head protruding out,
06:26 absorbing the sunlight.
06:28 - Man, I can't believe you got one.
06:29 - I know, and on my first attempt as well.
06:32 I'll tell you what's impressive
06:33 about this reptile is its claws.
06:36 Let me kinda just see if I can get one of its feet out here.
06:39 Oh, he's actually missing a claw on one side.
06:41 They're excellent climbers,
06:43 and oftentimes, early in the morning like this,
06:45 what they will do is climb up on the side of a tree
06:47 or perch out on a log where they're absorbing sunlight.
06:50 And like I said, it's an ectotherm,
06:52 so they rely on the sunlight to heat up
06:54 before they head out and hunt for the day.
06:56 Actually, I think at this point,
06:58 he is just using my hand as a perch.
06:59 I've got him sort of propped up in the sun there.
07:01 I think he's saying to himself, "Ah, this is perfect."
07:05 - Is this normal behavior?
07:07 I mean, that lizard is so calm.
07:09 - I honestly expected it to jump off that log and take off,
07:12 and I would be chasing it across the bush,
07:14 but I think it was relying more on its camouflage
07:16 than anything to keep it hidden.
07:18 Now, this is an opportunistic predator,
07:21 and they're primarily feasting
07:22 on small insects and arachnids.
07:25 However, they're omnivorous,
07:26 which means that if they find the chance
07:28 to eat some plants, some berries, something like that,
07:30 they will scarf up that as a meal as well.
07:34 Now, look at the length of this lizard's tail.
07:36 Beautiful, right?
07:37 Now, unlike some lizard species,
07:39 they're not able to detach that tail
07:41 to help them escape from predators.
07:43 Actually, I can actually balance the lizard
07:45 by the end of its tail and keep it on my hand like that,
07:48 and that tail is incredibly spiky.
07:51 Go ahead, Mark, reach out there
07:52 and feel how rough those scales are.
07:54 And if you run your hand in the opposite direction,
07:57 that's where you really get ripped up.
07:58 I'm getting little lacerations all over my hands
08:01 just from handling it.
08:03 - I don't even think there's sandpaper that's that gritty.
08:05 - Right? - Wow.
08:07 - Let's look at the underside of the lizard.
08:08 Now, the belly is much softer than its back,
08:12 almost like the belly of a horned lizard.
08:15 Go ahead and zoom in there.
08:16 You see those large ear sockets?
08:18 They have excellent hearing
08:21 and wonderful eyesight during the day.
08:23 This is without question
08:24 one of the most iconic species here in Australia,
08:28 and I know for you guys out there watching Coyote Pack
08:30 you have been requesting a bearded dragon episode
08:33 for quite some time,
08:34 and I think it's really fitting that our first lizard
08:36 of this Australian trip just so happens to be that reptile.
08:40 Well, this was pretty cool,
08:42 getting the bearded dragon up close for the cameras.
08:45 I'm Coyote Peterson.
08:46 Be brave, stay wild.
08:49 We'll see you on the next adventure.
08:51 All right, guys, what lizard are we gonna catch next?
08:54 Getting to see, let alone safely catch,
08:58 and present a bearded dragon
09:00 has been a goal of mine for many years.
09:03 These rugged lizards define everything
09:05 that I've always loved about reptiles,
09:08 and their even-keeled demeanor
09:09 makes them an instant favorite
09:11 amongst herpetology enthusiasts.
09:13 As a team, we do our best to follow
09:16 the suggestions of our audience,
09:18 and if the Coyote Pack makes a request,
09:21 especially for something as safe and fascinating
09:23 as the iconic bearded dragon,
09:26 you better believe we were going to make it happen.
09:29 What do you think, guys?
09:31 Who has the better beard, Coyote Peterson,
09:34 or the bearded dragon?
09:35 What's going on, Coyote Pack?
09:42 Winter is coming,
09:45 which means it's starting to get cold here in Ohio,
09:47 and most of us are bundling up.
09:49 Now, some of us are wearing fleeces,
09:52 and some of us are from Florida.
09:55 Yeah, that's a snowsuit,
09:57 but when it comes to me, I simply layer up
10:00 by wearing as many T-shirts as I possibly can.
10:03 - That's a Brave Wilderness T-shirt.
10:04 - That's right, Mark,
10:06 an official Brave Wilderness T-shirt,
10:07 which is available now at the BW store.
10:09 - Whoa, do people know that we have a Brave Wilderness store?
10:12 - Well, if they didn't, they know now.
10:14 Do you guys want to see some of these epic designs
10:16 that we have ready for the holidays?
10:17 - Cue the fashion show montage.
10:19 - Here we go.
10:20 (roaring)
10:22 Okay, guys, do you see this shirt here?
10:24 This is the gray official Brave Wilderness logo.
10:26 I love this one because it's resistant in all climates.
10:30 Now, underneath this shirt, wait for it.
10:32 (roaring)
10:33 We have the BW logo shirt.
10:34 See that?
10:36 The classic BW symbol that you'll oftentimes see
10:38 on YouTube and up in the corner of the videos
10:40 as the watermark.
10:41 You want to see the next one?
10:43 I bet you do.
10:44 Here we go.
10:45 - Watermark's on the other side, by the way.
10:47 Nope, yeah.
10:50 - Mm, yeah.
10:51 (Mark laughing)
10:52 (cat meowing)
10:53 See that right there?
10:54 That's the Brave Wilderness logo on a brown shirt,
10:57 totally camouflaged in the environment.
10:59 Ready for the next one?
11:00 - Whoa, a blue shirt.
11:02 - Be brave, stay wild, the blue version.
11:04 This is absolutely one of my favorite shirts.
11:06 See how the orange really kicks out?
11:08 This is the opposite of camouflage,
11:10 blue and orange together at the same time.
11:12 Be brave, stay wild, ready for the next shirt?
11:15 - Let's do it.
11:15 - Let's do it.
11:17 It's just like the blue and the orange one,
11:20 only different colors, get it?
11:21 - How many shirts do you have?
11:23 - It's an endless supply of shirts.
11:24 In fact, we have around a million designs
11:27 on the website right now.
11:28 No, not a million designs, how many?
11:30 - Like 12.
11:31 - Like 12?
11:32 12 is close to a million, though,
11:33 and I've got all of 'em on right now.
11:34 (cat meowing)
11:37 This is actually a youth size extra large.
11:41 It's pretty tight, but there are plenty more
11:44 where this came from.
11:45 We've got adult sizes and kid sizes.
11:46 - Wait, that's a kid's shirt?
11:48 - That's a kid's shirt right there.
11:49 - All right.
11:50 - Okay.
11:50 - Aside from shirts,
11:52 you can also buy the official
11:54 Leather Walker Coyote Peterson hat.
11:56 That's right, and if you don't wanna wear
11:58 a leather cowboy hat, guess what else we have?
12:00 Ball caps.
12:01 Ready?
12:03 We've got the gray one.
12:05 Check that out.
12:06 Pretty cool, right?
12:07 We've also got the black one.
12:10 Check that out.
12:11 And we've also got the blue one,
12:13 which matches pretty much everything.
12:16 Now, aside from hats, we also have
12:19 (paper rustling)
12:22 posters!
12:23 You guys like posters, right?
12:25 - Tour poster.
12:26 - Now, if you don't want a poster,
12:28 we also have the Brave Adventures book.
12:32 Looking pretty epic.
12:33 This is an autographed copy.
12:35 And aside from that, we've also got stickers.
12:40 Lots and lots of stickers.
12:42 - Now you gotta pick all that up, right?
12:44 - I'm gonna pick all that up
12:45 because we don't wanna litter in the environment.
12:46 - Guys, right now all of the Brave Wilderness elves,
12:49 who magically look just like Chance,
12:51 are hard at work in the Brave Wilderness factory,
12:53 packing up gifts for all the good little
12:55 Coyote Pack boys and girls.
12:57 So make your way over to the Brave Wilderness store
13:00 and pick something up for your favorite Pack member.
13:02 Order as soon as you can so that your gifts show up
13:04 just in time for the holidays.
13:06 Woo, it's really getting cold out here.
13:08 I better put my shirts back on.
13:09 (upbeat music)
13:12 (wind blowing)
13:14 If you thought the bearded dragon was a friendly lizard,
13:30 make sure to go back and watch the episode
13:32 where we get another spiky looking reptile
13:34 up close for the cameras, the horned lizard.
13:37 And don't forget, subscribe,
13:39 so you can join me and the crew
13:40 on this season of Breaking Trail.
13:42 Real cryptic colors that blend in
13:44 with all the sand and the rocks.
13:46 (animal growling)
13:50 (animal howling)
