00:00 Hi everyone, I'm Courtney Bright.
00:04 I'm the Senior Social Digital Editor at American Salon and we are coming to you live today
00:08 in Las Vegas at Redken Symposium.
00:10 I'm very excited.
00:11 This is our very first Facebook Live here at Symposium.
00:13 We're going to be having a series, but first up, I've got Jenny Strevey with us.
00:18 You guys may know her as the Confessions of a Hair Stylist and Jenny kind of braved on
00:22 a stylist that was out registering, who's also named Courtney, and I'm going to step
00:27 away and let Jenny take out.
00:28 You guys, so this is so exciting being here at Redken Symposium.
00:33 Again, I braid bombed my friends here, Courtney.
00:37 So what I'm going to show you guys how to do is a beautiful disheveled fishtail braid.
00:41 So I came up with this the other day and I thought it was kind of clever in the sense
00:45 of really utilizing a fishtail braid in a different way.
00:48 So anytime you're doing a fishtail braid, you want to make sure that you hold the sections
00:53 out right, make sure the density is the same.
00:56 So we're going to take a small section of hair from the right, cross it over to the
00:59 left, small piece of hair from the left, cross it over to the right.
01:03 Now I'm taking larger sections than I normally would with a fishtail braid because we're
01:07 going to dishevel it up and then pull everything into it.
01:10 So you can see fishtail braid, just a small piece of hair from the left to right, right
01:16 to left.
01:17 I feel like sometimes hairdressers have a hard time with fishtail braids because they
01:20 can't grasp that they just take a little section from the outside and cross it over.
01:26 It is that easy you guys.
01:28 So again, I always like to reference almost like a quarter of the hair on the side here
01:33 from right to left, then we're on the left here, left to right.
01:37 So again, taking larger sections.
01:41 Now Courtney has a nice texture, her hair's a little bit on the dirty side she said, which
01:45 is great for this because it's really going to help smooth the cuticle down.
01:49 We also have products like Braid Aid that will help smooth the cuticle down as well
01:53 when you're doing any type of braid.
01:56 So again, just crossing over.
01:58 We're going to go ahead and go about two thirds of the way down.
02:02 So this is that braided hairstyle that is a braid but it's not going to look like a
02:07 braid.
02:08 So we're going to really dishevel it up and make it into a beautiful, kind of a bohemian
02:14 style.
02:15 Again, crossing it over, right to left, working a little bit faster now.
02:20 So a couple more passes, then this is the fun part.
02:22 This is my favorite part is when we really get in there and just kind of make it a little
02:27 bit messy, a little bit more editorial and definitely very kind of big and bohemian.
02:33 Denise from Germany says hi.
02:35 Hi Denise, I know who that is.
02:37 Hello Denise.
02:38 So now we're going to go ahead and pull the braid apart.
02:40 So it's really important at this point that we pinch and pull.
02:43 And what I mean by that is we're going to go section by section of all of our fishtail
02:48 braid on the side here, the sections, and just pinch and pull it out.
02:53 The reason why you want to go section by section is because you don't want to lose any of that
02:57 definition.
02:58 Sometimes, if you just kind of pull it apart, it can look a bit sloppy, so you definitely
03:03 want to still have some structure in there.
03:06 So pinch and pulling, pinch and pulling all the way down to the ends, going a little bit
03:10 faster here.
03:11 I like it a little bit bulkier at the top and then gets a little bit skinnier towards
03:16 the bottom.
03:17 So now I'm going to grab on the left side here, do the same thing, pinch and pull, pinch
03:21 and pull, pinch and pull here.
03:25 Now it's great that Courtney has a little bit of that blonde, that definition into her
03:29 hair so you can actually see the braid.
03:33 Sometimes, if the hair is too dark, you actually lose a lot of that braid feel.
03:37 So now that we've pulled that apart, I've been playing around with this technique.
03:42 We have our fishtail, right?
03:43 So we're going to...
03:44 So Juan is sending love from Tucson, Arizona.
03:45 Oh, what's up Juan?
03:46 And Bev is asking you if you would just catch her up really quick, please, for anybody who's
03:51 just joined.
03:52 So Bev, we're going to create a kind of bohemian mermaid style.
03:57 We've just done a fishtail braid right now, and we've really pulled it apart, pinched
04:01 and pulled it, so now we're going to start incorporating the sides in a second.
04:06 So what I'm going to go ahead and do is loosely hold onto this, right?
04:09 I'm going to take my fingers, there's not much technique in this, you guys, so put my
04:14 fingers in there and then lightly hold onto the tips, just the baby ends, and we're going
04:19 to pull this braid up.
04:22 See this?
04:23 Just pulling it up and then pulling on the ends.
04:26 So it doesn't actually look like a fishtail braid anymore, right?
04:30 So we have our beautiful ends here, maybe we'll finish it off with a bit of curl.
04:34 So before I go ahead and let go of my fingers here, I'm going to grab with my left hand,
04:39 and we're just going to go ahead and secure that with a hair elastic.
04:42 We're going to use just a clear hair elastic here.
04:46 So it gives it that kind of braided feel, bohemian feel, but you can't actually tell
04:52 it was really a fishtail braid, right?
04:54 So I've been playing around with that technique a lot, and I've been falling in love with
04:58 it.
04:59 So you can see, it looks very soft, romantic.
05:01 Now we're going to take a little bit of our Extra High Hold Hairspray by Redken, spray
05:07 it a little bit.
05:09 We want our textures to match.
05:10 This is really nice and kind of like, kind of a textured, whimsical kind of feel, so
05:17 we want this to have a little bit more texture.
05:18 So I'm going to hold onto this and then just pinch and pull it up for more of a erratic
05:23 texture.
05:25 So it kind of gives it that undone kind of feel to it.
05:29 So once we've done that, we're going to go ahead and incorporate the sides.
05:33 So I'm going to turn Miss Courtney here.
05:36 So I'm going to go ahead and section it out.
05:39 We're going to go ahead and leave some of the front hairs away for later.
05:43 So this is our money area, so I always like to leave those out for later.
05:47 So we're going to work with these sections first.
05:48 We're going to do that on both sides.
05:52 Clip this away just for a little bit later.
05:54 Do the same thing on the opposite side here.
06:00 I always like to think of braids and updos like you're piecing a puzzle together.
06:04 I feel like too many hairdressers get a little overwhelmed with styles like this, but if
06:08 you slowly kind of incorporate it piece by piece, it just makes it a lot easier on yourself.
06:13 So we're going to clip those front guys for later.
06:17 So there's a lot of different things you can do with these sections.
06:20 You could braid them, maybe incorporate them, you could twist them.
06:24 What I want to go ahead and do, I want to go ahead and create a knot in there just to
06:29 create something a little bit different, and then we're going to go ahead and pull the
06:32 rest in momentarily.
06:34 So with that, everyone knows how to basic knot, right?
06:38 So we're going to create a knot.
06:39 So we have our knot up front.
06:42 Then I'm going to go ahead and take this section and then clip it away and then knot down at
06:47 the bottom here.
06:48 Antonio says, "Pure artistry."
06:49 Aw, thank you.
06:50 So we're just going to go ahead and, you know, I always think, I try to think of hair, knot
06:59 as hair, you know, like what can you do?
07:02 Like lately I've been kind of experimenting with how people like do leather work, so how
07:07 they braid different types of leather work, because I feel like we got to sometimes think
07:13 of outside the box, and I think that's really, really key.
07:17 So we just knotted that.
07:19 Then we need our textures to match, right?
07:22 So I'm going to go ahead and hairspray it and then just kind of pull it apart a little
07:26 bit, so pinch and pull, pinch and pull.
07:30 So I always like to incorporate different types of elements into any styles that I'm
07:35 creating.
07:36 So this is kind of fun.
07:37 So we have our little knot there.
07:38 Stuart from Scotland is loving it.
07:40 Awesome, Stuart.
07:41 Thank you.
07:42 All right.
07:43 So now we're going to go ahead and drop these sections out.
07:50 So we are going to, what are we going to do?
07:53 We're going to go ahead and pull it back and then just do a little twisting into the knot,
08:00 leaving these kind of guys out, because they kind of want to come out anyway.
08:05 So I'm going to divide this hair in front in half.
08:08 Then we're going to use a little bit of wax blast, taking our section of hair, lightly
08:15 misting it.
08:17 We're going to go ahead and twist it away from the face.
08:22 Now we're going to surface pinch and pull it.
08:25 So we're pinching it and we're pulling it forward, making it look a lot fuller.
08:30 It kind of gives it that kind of delicate element to it.
08:36 And we're going to pin it right into where our knot is, grabbing a bobby pin.
08:41 And her hair is fairly fine texture.
08:43 She has a lot of it.
08:46 Go ahead and release this.
08:47 Jesse Hernandez from Mexico.
08:48 He says he loves it.
08:50 Awesome.
08:51 Thank you, Jesse.
08:52 A little bit more of our wax blast.
08:58 So again, twisting it, pinch and pulling it.
09:01 So I like to add, too, when I'm holding onto it with my left hand here, I'm holding onto
09:06 it firmly but still allowing the hair to move, because you want that surface hair to move.
09:12 So we're just pinch and pulling it, pinch and pulling it.
09:15 This is a good one for people that their hair just won't stay curled, because it almost
09:22 kind of locks it into that twist.
09:25 Grab another hair bobby pin here, and then we're just putting it right into that knot.
09:33 So we're going to do the same thing with the opposite side.
09:35 I'll probably tuck these guys in.
09:37 Everybody's thanking you for sharing all of this.
09:41 Oh, of course.
09:42 You guys are welcome.
09:43 Victoria says thank you for sharing your skills.
09:46 You guys are welcome.
09:47 All right.
09:48 So we're going to twist this way.
09:49 Actually, I'm going to go around this way here, just because I'm right-handed.
09:56 So pinch and pull.
09:57 So you guys, this is-- I mean, I came up with this in a few minutes.
10:01 You know, I play around a lot with different textures, with different hair types.
10:06 We braid-bombed Courtney here.
10:08 So I always like to encourage people in the industry to play around with hair a lot more.
10:13 You know, like, let's test our boundaries.
10:15 I think that's when magic happens.
10:17 Recently I've been going to, like, art museums and really trying to take my inspiration from
10:23 elsewhere other than Instagram or social media, just to kind of get a new outlook on things.
10:29 So twisting away from the face, pinch and pulling, pinch and pulling.
10:37 And then we're just going to go ahead and connect that.
10:42 So she has these kind of little light, airy baby ends.
10:46 I'm just going to tuck them.
10:47 We're just going to go ahead and forget about them here.
10:50 We're going to twist it, put our bobby pin in there, and just tuck them right in there.
10:54 Now I'm going to do some detailing out, grabbing some of our hairspray.
11:01 Again, just kind of pinch and pulling, creating, like, a really nice erratic texture in there.
11:11 Scotland.
11:12 Michelle says, "This is so creative."
11:15 Aw, thank you.
11:17 I'm getting love from all continents.
11:23 And we missed a piece here.
11:24 We'll go ahead and twist that into it.
11:30 But I think this would be a really nice concert festival hair.
11:34 It'd be a great, like, bohemian bride hairstyle.
11:38 You know, if you put, like, a nice embellishment here, you could certainly...
11:41 I know a lot of my brides have been asking for two looks, too.
11:45 So say this is, like, one look, maybe curly ends, and then you can easily take it all
11:49 and create, like, a really nice low chignon as well.
11:52 So just giving you guys a couple ideas there.
11:55 So yeah, I think that's it.
11:57 I'm going to go ahead and...
11:58 Jamie says, "Super cute."
11:59 Aw, thank you.
12:00 So we're just going to go ahead and finish it off with a little bit of wax blast, just
12:05 to kind of smooth some of the cuticle down.
12:08 And Courtney was such a great sport for letting me braid-bomb her.
12:12 That's kind of my thing.
12:13 I like to braid-bomb people.
12:15 So really different.
12:16 Again, just to recap, we used the fishtail braiding technique.
12:23 I took my fingers and I pulled it up to where it almost created kind of a knotted kind of
12:27 bohemian feel to it.
12:29 Took sections on the side, created that beautiful knot.
12:32 And then with the leftover pieces around the face, we delicately twisted and pinched and
12:36 pulled and tucked it into our knot.
12:39 So that is about it.
12:40 Really, really easy.
12:41 Finishing off with a little bit of wax blast, only because since she has that chemically
12:47 textured hair, as I know, because I do as well, that blonde texture, sometimes we lose
12:52 a lot of shine.
12:53 So adding a little bit of wax or a shine element in there will definitely kind of bring that
12:57 back.
12:58 So I think that's it.
12:59 I hope you guys enjoyed it.
13:01 Thank you so much for having me.
13:02 This is so fun.
