00:00 Hiya! Good evening. Gosh I sounded a bit daft then didn't I? Hiya! Anyway, hello, good
00:09 evening and welcome. That's a bit better, that's more British isn't it? A little bit
00:15 more Queens English. Right I'm just altering my little set up here, just so we can get
00:24 the best sort of view. I think that's okay, let me know if it's not. And also I've got
00:29 music on in the background, like I like to have, so if it's too loud or anything, please
00:35 do let me know. So let's see who's online and then we'll begin in a little bit. Hello
00:42 everybody. Hello! Let me just put my reading glasses on because my eyes are getting so
00:49 bad. Nabila, hello, nice to see you. Hi Aimee and Sarah. Corinna, Christina. First timer,
01:00 welcome! I really hope that you enjoyed it. Oh, hi Shona, not too addicting I hope. Hello
01:08 from Sweden, hello from the UK and Alaska. Is it really cold in Alaska or is that just
01:14 a really daft question? Because it's really, really chilly in the UK, I have to say. I've
01:19 been really wanting snow and we're just not getting it, which is very disappointing. Also
01:23 got quite a shiny forehead, one moment. Just a little touch up, there we go. Not very on
01:34 screen made up tonight, but I have been working all day. Somebody else sitting with their
01:40 rollers in. So as you can see, I've got one side rollers in, one side pink curls. And
01:49 I'm going to have to put these glasses back on. Honestly, it's getting terrible. Don't
01:53 ever get older people. Your eyesight goes awful. Washington State, Sweden, Spain, hello
02:00 Olga. Thank you, Peggy. I would love some snow. I love the snow so much. We just don't
02:11 get it in the UK anymore. Right, we've got quite a lot of you online now. So shall I
02:17 start? I did this earlier today, so it's been sat for... Oh, hi Steph Pink. Hello. Just
02:26 had a quick shout out there. Oh gosh, lots of you have had snow and in Derbyshire. Well,
02:32 I'm in Derbyshire, Caroline, but no snow in actual Derby. Excuse me, this is my phone
02:37 telling me my storage is almost full, interrupting me mid-flow. How rude. Germany, amazing. Amazing.
02:46 So yeah, I did this probably about half past one, two o'clock today. I would normally like
02:50 it to set a lot longer than that, usually overnight, but I just didn't have time last
02:55 night or anything to do it. And also I had an appointment today and I didn't really want
03:00 to go to the appointment with this in, this in and this little umper lumper top knot going
03:08 on here. So what I'm going to do first is talk to you about products. And as I'm talking,
03:17 I'm going to try and answer questions as I can. Spit my words out there. Um, but it's
03:23 quite difficult when I'm doing things, um, and trying to read as well. So please don't
03:29 think that I'm ignoring any of your comments. It's just, yeah, I need an extra person really.
03:34 Anyway. So yes, Tracy Knight, also in Derby, no snow. It's just rude. We want snow. Claire
03:45 is asking how I go on sleeping with the clips. Absolutely fine because I use these double
03:51 prong curl clips and as you can see on the base, they're completely flat. So that's the
03:57 bit that sits against your scalp. So somebody's just said, it just looks like I've not had
04:04 a date in centuries. Well, that's actually true because I have been with my boyfriend
04:09 nearly six years. We do have dates, date nights, but you know, not actually a date date. So
04:17 you're almost right there. Anyway, back to the double prong curl clips, they're flat
04:22 on the back. That's the bit that goes against your scalp. So absolutely fine. And once I'm
04:27 all pin curled, I'll put a headscarf or a turban on and just sleep with that just to
04:32 protect it. So let's start talking a little bit about products. Um, I'm going to talk
04:37 to you about obviously this side and this side and then this side, this bit here will
04:46 be curled with my curling tongs. So that's going to, sorry, I'm just laughing at some
04:52 of the comments. Yes, Dawn, that did tell him. You have to laugh, don't you? Um, so
05:01 I'm going to talk to you about products for this bit, which will be set with the curling
05:06 tongs. So I'm just going to brush that through. So if you're using any kind of hair, uh, heat
05:14 on your hair, you need to make sure that you protect that hair, whether it's straighteners
05:19 or whether it's a hairdryer, um, or curling tongs or a curling wand. Because if you continually
05:26 use that on your hair, you're going to really, really damage it beyond repair if you're not
05:30 careful. So heat protection. So my favourite one that I use it, uh, use on myself and also
05:39 my clients is hot spray, uh, from Kenra Professional. Now I know that, sorry, Kenra Platinum, but,
05:48 um, I'm aware that you can't really get this in the UK unless you are a professional and
05:55 you can go to a wholesalers. So I'll talk to you about some that are a bit more available.
06:02 This one from Paul Mitchell, which is called Heat Seal, thermal protection and style. That's
06:08 good. It's more expensive than kind of a high street type brand, a drugstore brand, but
06:14 it's a big bottle and it really is worth spending just that little bit more just to get, you
06:20 know, really good results. So that's a good one. Another good one is from Wella, which
06:27 is called Perfect Setting, which is a light setting lotion spray. And you can use this
06:33 for blow drying as well. So it's a good sort of heat protect. And then if you are, um,
06:40 on a bit of a budget, I would go for the VO5 heat protect, which is just a few pounds in
06:48 the UK from a local drugstore. And that's, that's pretty good as well. But obviously
06:54 I prefer the salon brands. So, um, Dawn is asking about heated rollers. Any recommendations?
07:02 I would go for Babilis, but to be honest, I'm not a fan of heated rollers. Um, I don't
07:08 think they get hot enough. The ones that you can buy quite cheaply and also the packs,
07:13 they only seem to come from, come with, um, large, medium, and then just a few small.
07:20 And when you're trying to do a vintage hairstyle, you need smaller, more structured curls. And
07:27 if they did different pack size where you could just buy a whole load of small ones,
07:32 that might be great, but you can't get that. Um, and also I don't think it gives enough
07:36 direct heat either. So I prefer if I'm going to use heat, a curling tong. So, uh, yes,
07:43 heat seal. That was, that was the one, the Paul Mitchell one. So I'm going to start first
07:51 with putting some of the Kenra through my hair. You can spray this on individual sections,
08:00 but just for speed, I'm going to spray it on the whole section. Now this is brand new,
08:05 so just takes a few pumps. There we go. Just dampen it slightly and then brush it through.
08:15 Laura, my lipstick is from, um, Rimmel. It's a Provocalypse one and I like the Provocalypse
08:22 range because it really does stay put. It's on the next day. It's the only long list,
08:29 long lasting lipstick that I've found that actually does last throughout the day. But
08:35 I am looking for cruelty free brands. So if anybody's got any recommendations of a lipstick
08:41 that literally stays put all day, do let me know. So I'm going to talk to you about curling
08:48 with the tongs. I'm going to separate this front section off first because I want to
08:53 show you a common mistake. Whoops. Ah, Kat Von D. See, I'm not that keen on that to be
09:06 honest. I don't think it lasts that long on me. Maybe I'm just doing too much drinking,
09:11 eating and talking. Who knows? And kissing. So Nicola, hello. Are you all right, lovely?
09:18 So these double prong clips, eBay, just look on eBay for double prong curl clips. Right.
09:24 So I have got here my trusty Babyliss, um, Babyliss Pro Curling Tongs and you need to
09:32 go for quite a, um, small barrel size. So this is a 19 mil one. What a lot of people
09:40 do with curling tongs is firstly they'll twist it the wrong way like that. You see what happens
09:49 there? It gives you that kind of fish hook look. So another mistake people make is they
10:00 start from the bottom and go all the way up to the top and it slides out. So that's tighter.
10:21 You go all the way up from the bottom and if you think about it, you've got that end
10:25 bit of hair right in the middle where all that heat is. So it's going to cause damage
10:31 and also you're not getting much heat on the outside. So look, you can see all that curl
10:38 right at the bottom. That's for kind of, if you're going for a structured style with like
10:42 a brush out 50s or 40s Rita Hayworth style, um, curl set and waves or you know, some kind
10:49 of half poodle type updo or something that's not going to really give you any wave curl
10:55 or wave to work with up here. So what you need to do is, this is where it gets tricky
11:08 and I suggest that you actually practice when you, with your curling tongs not actually
11:13 on because it is a bit tricky and there's the whole, when you're looking in the mirror
11:17 doing it as well, that hand eye coordination can be really, really confusing, but you need
11:22 to start fairly close to the roots and you're wrapping it round, keeping it flat like a
11:27 ribbon and the beauty of these Babyliss ones, they've got ceramic barrels so you can slide
11:33 your hair through it. I wiggle it just a little bit here so you can slide it through easier,
11:37 but if you look, I'm curling much closer to the root and I'm getting all that hair in
11:43 there and eventually it will come to the bottom. I'm going to just put my finger on it lightly,
11:55 that's getting nice and hot. Can you see the difference in the curl? Such a difference
12:01 isn't it? And it means that you've spread that heat evenly throughout that section rather
12:07 than just being focused on the ends. So I'm just going to let that cool for a minute or
12:12 two or a second or two with a drink of water and then I'm just going to comb through. So
12:23 yeah, we've just got a wave at the bottom. I mean that technique, if that's what you
12:28 want, just a bit of a wave at the bottom or a curl at the bottom, that's fine, absolutely
12:34 fine, but as I keep saying, you need a structured curl for vintage styles. So that's a bit cooler
12:42 so I'm just going to comb through. So there you go, you can see that shape starting to
12:51 form because that heat has been nice and evenly distributed through that section. I might
13:04 go out now for a drink or two, what do you reckon? Saucy! Then I definitely wouldn't
13:09 get a date in six years! Right, I'm going to release the rest of this hair and brush
13:18 through again. Now I'm just going to put a little bit more heat protect on that section
13:22 at the front because I'm going to curl it again. Wait for that to dry. Lots of you joining
13:36 from the States. Ah, Tony's saying her curls end up dropping. I'm going to address that
13:43 in just a minute. So I'm going to take this section from back to front about an inch wide
13:52 and split that into two. I'm going to start curling. Following that same technique, tickle
14:11 and turn, so you're tickling the little clamp there and turning at the same time, making
14:18 sure it doesn't come out like it just has. I don't think this is any curling 101, there
14:25 will be room 101 with that. But I'm just wrapping that round. Be very careful if this happens
14:32 to you, I have got asbestos fingers from this and the glue gun. So I'm going to gently slide
14:38 that out and take a curl clip and if it's come and done slightly, I'm just going to
14:50 roll that back down. I'm going to get my clip and clip it to see where that bit meets the
14:59 root. That's also giving you what's called a stand up pin curl. A stand up pin curl is
15:08 also going to give you volume straight away because you've got the curl directly on the
15:16 root so you can see how it's standing up so that's going to give you height and volume.
15:27 And sometimes as well, if I'm having a frizzy hair day or particularly if I've got freshly
15:33 washed hair, this is not freshly washed, I'll use a little bit of working hairspray. Just
15:41 a bit and it just adds a bit of smoothness. I really like L'Oreal Elnett for that, it's
15:51 a really good working hairspray because it brushes out really easily but I cannot stand
15:55 the smell so I have to be really careful not to use too much because it makes me really
15:59 dizzy and I feel really sick. So let's do this again. And like I say, it's all practice
16:10 so if you want to practice this after you've watched this, do it with your curling tongs
16:14 off first so that you don't burn your hair. I think somebody's just asked how I don't
16:32 burn myself, it's just asbestos fingers really. I'm so used to it, I've been doing this for
16:39 several years now and I also use a glue gun daily so I'm pretty used to it. I'm not sure
16:45 if I've actually got any fingerprints which I'm thinking will hold me in good stead for
16:50 my third career as a cat burglar. I'm thinking how to catch a thief style. I am joking by
16:58 the way, I don't advocate stealing or thievery or cat burglary. Cats, yes, but not cat burglary.
17:07 So here we go, a little bit more L'Oreal. I used to use L'Oreal Elnett all the time.
17:17 Thought it was wonderful and nothing could top it until I discovered Kenra when they
17:22 arrived in the UK and also I did a wedding where I think there were about five or six
17:28 in the bridal party and I thought I was having a vertigo attack at the end of it all and
17:34 I felt so sick and so so dizzy and then I used that hairspray again after that particular
17:40 time and realised that's what it was. It's so fumey and smells so strong. Right so I'm
17:47 just going to tickle that bit there until I get the ends in. Down to the root. Corinna
17:54 is asking me, oh Dawn is asking me a question as well then I'll answer Corinna's. The background
18:03 is my studio. This is where I work on my hair accessories every day and I can't show you
18:10 the rest because it's an absolute tip. I'm so busy and I've got so many supplies I just
18:14 don't have time to tidy. Whoops that one's come and done a little bit but I'm not going
18:23 to worry I'm just going to re-roll that and because you've already got that curl in it's
18:27 quite easy to roll back down and it's still hot. So Corinna is asking me who I prefer
18:33 Marilyn or Audrey. Oh that's a very difficult question. I think Audrey Hepburn to be honest.
18:42 I think she did so much good in her life right from when she was a young girl and that's
18:48 what I like about her. She wasn't just a massive talent and style icon there was a lot more
18:53 to her. But then I adore Marilyn Monroe as well and if I could ever meet her I'd just
18:59 want to give her a big cuddle because she was so sad. So Una, oh my background Dawn
19:10 is asking. Well that partly told you. So my background, I used to be a fashion designer
19:20 and I designed knitwear so sweaters, cardigans, knitted dresses, that sort of thing for high
19:26 street stores and I did that for almost 20 years and towards the latter part of that
19:32 career I started my hair business and that has just kind of grown and grown and flourished
19:39 and I ended up being lucky enough to leave the knitwear design industry behind because
19:44 it just wasn't making me happy at all it had changed, like the job had really really changed,
19:49 the industry had changed. So I've been doing hair styling for almost 4 years now and I'm
19:56 full time with that and also my accessories business which just sort of seemed like a
20:01 natural extension to the hair styling. So yeah I make vintage inspired bridal and everyday
20:07 and occasion hair flowers, headpieces and corsages. So, hi from Sweden, hello. So you
20:20 use Swatchcoft Got2B hairspray, which one is that? There's a few of them. Is it the
20:26 Glued that you're talking about? Corrina is asking me to say something in German, I didn't
20:32 take German at school but the only thing I can remember is "Ich bin 13 Jahre alt" and
20:39 I'm not 13 years old anymore, that's about all that I can say, sorry. Disgraceful. Excuse
20:47 me my phone is interrupting again, there we go. Annabel I am from the UK, from Derbyshire
20:55 which is smack bang in the middle of the country. Australia, hello. There we go. Last couple
21:07 of curls. LA, amazing, hello. I've never been to LA. I've been to New York many times and
21:18 I've been to just outside DC because I've got family there. I've never been anywhere
21:23 else in the States but I would absolutely love to. Let's just get that end of it in,
21:30 there we go. Aw, thank you Corrina, that's very, very kind. Amy, I can't plug my hair
21:39 accessories page, I can't type anything at the moment while I'm doing this but if you
21:44 go onto Etsy and just look up Pin Up Curl, so Pin Up Curl, that's my shop name. I'll
21:51 put the link at the bottom after the tutorial. So a few people have been asking about frizzy
22:07 hair, naturally curly hair. It's a bit of a tough one because naturally if it's really,
22:15 really curly it's got such a strong memory that it just wants to spring back into that
22:20 particular curl and I think the only way really is to straighten it first or to get it blow
22:24 dried first. That's the best way to actually do it before you set it. Or, as I say, with
22:31 these curling tongs, try these, the Babalist ones because they're so good, they're professional
22:36 tools and with the ceramic barrel you can really get it smoothed out and it adds a lot
22:43 of shine to it as well. So also a lot of people are asking about curls not holding. Now, this
22:52 is why you clip those curls to cool properly before you let them down. Obviously thick,
22:59 long, heavy hair is always going to drop somewhat, there's just not a lot you can do about that
23:06 because of the very nature of your hair. But the curl forms in your hair when it's going
23:13 from a hot state to a cold state and it forms that temporary curl which only comes out with
23:19 lots of brushing, sleep etc and washing obviously. So you need to clip it to cool like I have.
23:27 Now, they're fairly cool, they're not cool at all, so if you do it, allow plenty of time,
23:33 if you're going out or anything like that in the evening, do it that afternoon or a
23:36 few hours before so that you've got time to actually curl it and let it cool completely.
23:41 Hi Jools, have a good night tonight. I think it's a very common mistake that people make
23:52 when they're curling their hair with heat is that they let it drop because they haven't
23:57 curled it and if you let your hair just drop while it's cooling it's just dropping and
24:01 it's pulling all that curl out straight away. Now I'm not off out tonight, Dawn, I've got
24:10 a little bit more work to do for my hair accessories, some orders to process and I'm making myself
24:16 a corsage tonight for a big burlesque night that I'm going to on Saturday. There we go.
24:27 Yes I do do wedding hair accessories and let me just scroll down. Ah, Chantelle is saying
24:32 for curly hair do a wet roller set and dry properly. Lots of setting product before and
24:38 spray after. Yeah, that's also going to work just as long as you let it dry completely,
24:44 otherwise you've put all your rollers in and done all that work and it's still a bit wet.
24:52 So Leslie's asking what the time is. About half past seven. So I'm going to show you
25:01 this side first, which is my foam roller set. Angela, it's a Babalist Pro curling iron.
25:11 So I've used fairly small rollers and obviously the bigger the roller that you use, the bigger
25:17 the curl. 6am, wow. Yes, I do have Instagram Suvi, it's @pin_up_curl. So this is usually
25:33 a stronger curl but because it's only been set for about six hours, but you can see how
25:39 curly it actually is. And I've learnt how to sleep in these now as well. I'm kind of
25:48 used to them now. I don't know what make they are actually Dawn, they're just generic foam
25:58 rollers that I found on eBay. Yes, Victoria, I do use setting spray with curling irons
26:04 and also a thermal heat protect spray. If you re-watch the video back after it's all
26:10 been done, you'll be able to see the ones that I've recommended. Just take this last
26:14 one out. Thank you, Karen. So there we go. And I'm just going to brush through it. Sarah,
26:36 I think if you use foam rollers but do a wet set or a sort of a damp set, that would be
26:42 better than using heat. So you can see with rollers, you get a lovely structured wave
26:53 starting to form. Now if I'd have slept in these all night, it would have been ridiculously
27:06 curly. So I do really like the structure and that kind of sculptural shape almost that
27:19 foam rollers give you. And because you've rolled them on base, like I was saying with
27:25 these, you've got nice volume here already. Now if I'd have left these in for several
27:32 hours, this bit here would be ridiculously curly. And if you've got a little bit of frizz,
27:41 you can use a pomade, just a little bit. I love, as you might know if you've seen my
27:46 videos, Lady Look pomade, available on Etsy. I'm from the States. And Kirsty, I'm just
27:56 talking to everybody about the ends of your hair, if they're tangling and if they're a
28:03 little bit frizzy. If they're starting to tangle, just start brushing out from the bottom
28:09 very, very gently till you get that tangle out. Yes, Elizabeth, try smaller rollers.
28:23 And yes, Marie, I did put product in, I put a setting lotion in. So I mean, this is okay.
28:29 For me, it's not too frizzy at all. And I quite like fluffy curls. But if you are struggling,
28:35 just a little bit of pomade on your finger, emulsify it with the heat of your hands, just
28:45 run it through. I love the smell of Lady Look brand as well. It's like Mars Pan. And it's
28:54 just great for those little flyaways as well. And also, if you don't want those fluff girls,
29:11 you can mould it into a curl under, a bit like a page boy as well. So the brushes that
29:20 I'm using, I've got a Denman metal bristle brush. I think it just depends on your hair
29:28 type what brush you actually find that works for you. I really like this one. I think it
29:33 gets through my thick hair pretty well. I'm just going to fluff that up a little bit,
29:43 which is what I prefer. And then I'm also using a Kent, or you can get a Denman one
29:49 as well, natural bristle brush. And that just adds smoothness on the top. You can see how
30:02 lovely and smooth that is now. So I'm going to take out the pin curls and show you there.
30:08 I tend to do pin curls that are flat more than anything. I feel like they're more authentic.
30:15 And also I can sleep on them. So Karen is asking if metal brushes over plastic bristles
30:24 cause more static. For my hair, I find that plastic bristles cause more static for me.
30:30 But if there's a bit of static going on there, I'll spray the brush with some hairspray and
30:37 then start to run it through and that helps with the static. A body perm, it would be
30:50 less work in terms of just having an all over curl. But if you wanted to mould your curls
30:57 into a certain shape, it would be good to pin curl it as well because you're kind of
31:02 teaching your hair to go into a particular shape because you can do lots of different
31:06 sets with pin curls. A lot of people, when they started having their hair permed from
31:11 the twenties and thirties upwards, they had the perm but they also still pin curled because
31:17 of that reason. Emma, this will be just three bits, won't be a complete style. But I'll
31:26 show you kind of a bit of a hairstyle. The pomade is Lady Look brand. You can buy it
31:33 in the UK at Russell and Brown's Vintage Salon, which are in Liverpool or online on Etsy.
31:46 I prefer pin curls. Let me just find the name. Helene, I prefer pin curls but I think that's
31:52 what I always started with when I first started to get into vintage hair styling and it's
31:59 kind of my first love really. Best style for fine hair, just practice and find a hairstyle
32:06 that suits your hair, that stays, that is easy for you to do. I always think a curl
32:13 set and brush out is good for fine hair because you can add volume through backcombing and
32:18 making them fluffy curls or if you want them smooth and then more volume and fluff curl
32:24 at the bottom. I think updos on fine hair, unless you've got a ton of backcombing, which
32:31 can be hard to hide with fine hair, it's just going to look a bit scraped back so I would
32:36 recommend a full curl set and brush out. Obviously the smaller the pin curls, the smaller the
32:54 section of hair and the smaller the pin curls, the smaller those waves and those curls are
32:58 actually going to be and the same with rollers. So I'm just running my fingers through those.
33:13 So if you can't get hold of Lady Luck brand, another one which is pretty good as well is
33:19 Black and White which is really easy to find in the UK, it's really cheap as well. I do
33:25 find you have to use such a tiny bit of this though because it's quite greasy and it's
33:31 a lot runnier as well than the Lady Luck brand so I've just literally got a tiny bit on my
33:36 fingers. I find with pin curls as well, I can really do different sets with it. You
33:50 can with rollers of course but I just prefer doing different patterns and layouts with
33:56 pin curls. But then I know people who have foam rollers and use them more than anything
34:03 and they have great results. So personal preference at the end of the day. Thanks Karen. So just
34:19 brushing through and then get the smoothing brush. And then I can do different types of
34:40 curls. This would have been much tighter if I'd have had time to do them overnight last
34:45 night but I just didn't get it unfortunately. So in the 40s a lot of curls, if you have
34:51 a look at say Rita Hayworth for example, Lana Turner, their curls were really quite fluffy.
34:57 So to make them fluffier, which is also a good trick for finer hair, you can pull them
35:03 apart and that creates fluff and instantly more volume. I'm going to just show you what
35:19 it's like when I curl it under with a brush. So that's good to form a page boy. So if I
35:35 was doing a bit of a page boy, I would just add a little bit of backcombing just underneath
35:41 all the way through and then very lightly stroke the top so that you're not brushing
35:49 out any pin curling. Sorry, backcombing. That's just going to add just a little bit of structure.
35:56 And just put a little bit of hairspray on that. Oh I love the smell of Kenra hairspray.
36:16 That's going to be slightly addictive. Thank you Jenny, thanks for watching. So I'm just
36:26 going to show you this top bit. So that's all really nice and cool there. Kelly you
36:40 can do your hair like this, it's just lots of practice and research. I taught myself
36:47 how to do it just by reading, research, looking at pictures, watching lots of online tutorials
36:56 and just practiced nearly every night in front of the TV. Even if I didn't have time to do
37:00 my whole head, I would just practice certain sections of it until I got it right and then
37:04 I transferred that to the rest of my hair. Yes I can do a 40s hair tutorial, no problem.
37:15 I do have a YouTube channel Amy but there's hardly anything on there, there's about three
37:20 videos I think so I just don't get time. So I do find with a curling tong set it takes
37:28 a lot more brushing out to achieve what I want. And if you've got frizz on the ends
37:35 this is a good trick, brush it against the heel of your thumb or the palm of your hand.
37:48 And it's a really strong curl so you can just keep brushing it. If you've got thick hair
37:54 especially. So I'm now going to just blend these two sections together. So you can see
38:14 there that there's instant volume because of the way that they've been curled with upright
38:21 pin curls. You've already got that volume. I can make that even higher. Hi Ava, thanks
38:30 for watching. So I've got a fine tooth comb. Oh thank you Calinda. And I usually put a
38:44 little bit of dry shampoo on the roots because it just adds that little bit of texture and
38:49 that little bit of grip. But I'm just going to use hairspray because I haven't got any
38:54 on me at the moment. So I'm just going to backcomb just lightly. I'm going to take the
39:02 next section and I'm not going to backcomb them separately. I'm going to hold those two
39:07 sections together otherwise they separate. And just make sure you push it all the way
39:12 down to the roots. A lot of people make the mistake when they're backcombing of just going
39:17 like this and that's not going to do anything or you're just going to end up with a big
39:20 mat here. So be methodical about it. In, down. I'm going to take this section here. This
39:30 way gives you more of a 50s look as well. In, down, in, down, in, down. And then just
39:41 move it. Thank you everybody. Some lovely comments coming in tonight. So there you go.
39:53 You can see just that little bit of backcombing, how it's put a lot more height into it. So
39:58 I'm going to take my natural bristle brush and just really gently stroke over the top.
40:08 Just make it nice and smooth because you don't want to undo all that backcombing. If you
40:14 want it even higher you can put even more backcombing in. And the beauty, if you've
40:20 got a really strong curl that you've created, you can really mould that hair. I kind of
40:35 call it hair sculpting because that's what you're doing really. You've put the preparation
40:39 and the foundation in. And then a lot of people always say to me, "But you've just put all
40:44 that curl in and you're just brushing it all out." That's what it is. It's all that prep
40:50 to form what you want. So I'm going to hold this bit here. Or you can put a duckbill clip
40:56 in. I'm just going to brush that. I'm going to just take the side of my hand and just
41:10 form it into shapes. So I'm doing another tutorial in three weeks' time. So if there's
41:23 anything in particular you'd like to see, do let me know. But I think I might do a 40s
41:29 Rita type of style, seeing as it's been asked for and I think it follows up on this tutorial
41:35 really nicely. No gypsy, my hair colour is not natural. I wish it was. It's naturally,
41:44 I'd like to say dark blonde but it's probably more mousy brown with a generous smattering
41:51 of natural highlights, otherwise known as grey. Yeah, Rachel, I am lucky that my hair
42:00 is so cooperative. I'm quite lucky there. And also it's not at all clean. It's much
42:07 easier to do these hairstyles with hair that's just that little bit dirty unless you want
42:13 to do a wet set after washing. So wet sets usually hold really, really, really well for
42:20 days and days but they just don't seem to suit my hair for some reason. I've got quite
42:24 porous hair and it tends to go really quite frizzy. Victory rolls, OK. I can do that for
42:32 you. So now I'm just going to brush all this bit under that I've blended and mould it into
42:42 a bit more of a page boy style. Julie Douglas, I use Kenra hairspray. There we go. And a
43:01 page boy tutorial. OK, I shall write those down on my list. But yeah, I think definitely
43:08 the next one that I do in three weeks, I will do a Rita kind of brush out. It will be set
43:14 the night before. So I'll just show you the brushing out and the moulding technique. I
43:23 don't wear a page boy very often. I really quite like it. Oh, thank you, Helene. That's
43:31 really kind. I like to know that what I've been talking to you about is going to be really
43:37 useful for you. But the most useful thing that I can say to anybody watching is practice.
43:44 Rome was not built in a day as a hairstyle is not made in just the first time of doing
43:50 it. Practice, practice, practice. And if there's a certain technique that you've seen, read
43:56 about or I've taught you that isn't quite working, try and adapt it for something that
44:02 does work. Everybody's hair is different. Everybody's lifestyle is different. Yes, Charlotte,
44:10 a long hair tutorial. I have got that on my list. I'm just looking for a model who's going
44:16 to be able to help me at the moment. Thank you, Ali. So I am going to. Yes, Karen, practice
44:26 when you have nowhere to go every weekend, every day. Definitely just practice if you've
44:33 got a bit of spare time. Like I said, I started to learn just in front of the TV. I went to
44:38 an event, got slightly obsessed with vintage hair and ended up practicing more or less
44:43 every night that I could just in front of the TV, just mastering the techniques of pink
44:47 curling, even if it was just on a section of hair. Thank you, Tammy. Oh, my my favourite
44:54 hairstyle at the moment. It does change, I have to say, because I change my moods like
45:00 the weather sometimes or my likes anyway. But at the moment, I really love like a 40s
45:06 style half updo. So like a half poodle, whether it's a bit of a poodle at the side or right
45:13 at the front. That's that's kind of my favourite go to hairstyle at the moment. So, Nicole,
45:22 yes, it would work if you've got naturally wavy hair. If you've got waves rather than
45:27 tight, frizzy curls, it really helps, actually, because you've already got that that foundation
45:33 to start working on. You've already got that curl halfway formed. So definitely. Charlotte,
45:42 wet set on foam rollers. I don't do a wet wet set because my hair just goes frizzy.
45:49 So I would try a more of a damp set. Or if you did a wet set, put your head underneath
45:55 a hood dryer or get a hair dryer on it as well just to help it dry, because all that
45:59 water just gets absorbed into the foam. So it's it tends to make it frizzy, I think.
46:06 Oh, just one more thing. Foam rollers, but you've also got these that I use, which are
46:12 called Curlets. If you look on Etsy, you can find the Curlets brand. And it's a lady in
46:19 the UK who hand knits all these herself. And they're brilliant because you can get really
46:24 tight curls because of the texture, all the hair kind of grips into it. And when you finish
46:31 rolling it around, I'll just show you. Oh, thanks, Libby. Julie, just one second. I will
46:38 show you the hairspray can. I've got the volume spray. The freeze spray as well is really
46:46 good. Oh, Miranda, maybe try pin curling rather than foam rollers. Try a different technique.
47:01 There we go. And then because it's got that loop, integral little loop, thread that through.
47:14 And they're really easy to sleep in and you can wash them as well. So that is all for
47:21 now. Thank you very much for watching. And hopefully I'll see some of you back again
47:30 in a few weeks time, three weeks time. I'll put the event up on my Facebook page and also
47:38 that will be on the Vintage Life page as well. So I shall see you all soon. Bye.
