00:00 On to stage 6 of the Dauphiné.
00:17 Jonas Wingergaard seized control of the race yesterday with a demonstration on the Cote
00:21 d'Atese and he leads by over a minute.
00:24 He can now afford to just follow the wheels in the mountains.
00:52 Behind the Dane though, it's very open with plenty of riders targeting a solid overall
00:56 finish.
01:12 Others are already looking ahead to the Tour de France which starts in just three weeks.
01:17 We head to Savoie and the Alps today with 170km between Nantua and Crevelans, just over 3000
01:41 metres of elevation gain.
01:43 Four climbs in total and three of them come in the last 25km, the Côte d'Azavi, Notre-Dame-de-Belle-Combe
01:49 and Crevelans itself.
01:50 There are bound to be fireworks with a potentially fascinating battle between the breakaway and
01:56 the peloton.
02:10 It took a good hour and a half for the breakaway to form just after Pierre Latorre had led
02:14 the way over the first climb, the Frenchman taking the polka dot jersey from Donovan Grandin
02:19 who had abandoned earlier in the day.
02:23 Fourteen riders made the move including two from Sunal Quick-Step, Baggioli and Devenance
02:28 and three from Total Energies, VMO, Bergado and Vershi.
02:33 They were joined by Peters, Castroviejo, Amador, Zimmermann, Trentin, Jorgensen, Zingle, Kradica
02:39 and Guglielmi, so some real firepower in there.
02:44 Zimmermann was the best placed on GC at 6 minutes and 28 seconds.
02:54 Heading into the last 40km the road began to rise and the advantage began to fall, coming
02:58 down to around two minutes.
03:01 UNO-X and DSM setting the pace in the peloton.
03:06 The bunch just controlling things on the roads of Haute Savoie.
03:10 UNO-X is at Tobias Johannesson and DSM's Max Puhl perhaps thinking of making a move, with
03:15 Giulio Ciccone's Trek-Segafredo team also putting in a few turns.
03:20 The 14 breakaway riders still together as they've reached the intermediate sprint where
03:24 Trentin took a maximum haul of 10 points.
03:28 And it wouldn't be long before the front group splintered on the lower slopes of the Cors d'Izerravi,
03:32 7.8km at 5.7%.
03:36 Surprisingly Jorgensen was one of the first to drop.
03:41 Castroviejo and Bergodeau going clear at the front and they were soon joined by Zimmermann,
03:46 but could they hold on?
03:48 Four riders in pursuit, Pieters, Baggioli, Trentin and Guglielmi, but they were losing
03:52 ground.
03:53 The leaders at the summit with 35 seconds on the chasers and now a minute and a half
03:57 on the peloton.
04:00 And the GC favourites seemed happy enough to let the men at the front contest the win,
04:04 their advantage even increasing slightly going into the final 10km.
04:09 Bergodeau leading the way over the penultimate climb and virtually securing the polka dot
04:13 jersey, but he was no doubt more interested in adding to his sole career victory at last
04:18 year's Paris Nice.
04:20 The three leaders really starting to feel it as they hit the final climb.
04:24 Zimmermann was the first to attack with 2km to go and it didn't look like Castroviejo
04:28 or Bergodeau had the legs to follow.
04:31 The German started to waver on the steepest section and Bergodeau went all in to close
04:35 the gap.
04:36 It would be a two horse race for victory.
04:39 Vingegaard had a late zig from the GC group but he didn't drop any of his rivals and they
04:43 all finished together, but who was going to snatch the win?
04:49 And Bergodeau has gone very, very early now to try and win today's stage.
04:54 Has he gone too early?
04:56 Zimmermann now counterattacks.
04:58 Bergodeau had this in the bag and Zimmermann now attacks.
05:02 Zimmermann, Jorge Zimmermann into Marche, his first world tour win.
05:10 If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.
05:13 In his ninth breakaway of the year, Zimmermann finally has his first victory.
05:18 The 25-year-old taking just his second professional win and also the second in France after a
05:23 victory at the Tour de l'Art in 2021.
05:26 The German showing that he is a force to be reckoned with by securing his first triumph
05:30 on the world tour.
05:31 To be honest, I cannot really believe it at this moment.
05:36 I just gave my best and tried everything to be as good as possible and it worked out perfectly
05:42 all day long.
05:43 I felt yesterday incredibly strong but it didn't work out.
05:47 Then today I tried again and go full gas and in the end I win the sprint.
05:51 Now I'm completely speechless.
05:55 Zimmermann with his first podium finish of the season, taking the win ahead of Bergodeau
05:59 and Castroviejo.
06:00 Ciccone led in the GC favourites at 48 seconds with Landa and Godou both losing more time.
06:09 No problems for Vingegaard who remains a minute and ten seconds ahead of O'Connor overall.
06:14 The Dane was unable to gain any time on the final climb but he is still very much in command
06:18 of the race.
06:22 Laporte still leads the green jersey standings although Trentin cut the gap to 20 points
06:27 after getting into the breakaway.
06:28 Alaphilippe is third ahead of Vingegaard.
06:34 Bergodeau didn't get the stage win but he comes away with the polka dot jersey after
06:38 moving on to 13 points.
06:40 His team mate Latour is two back followed by Vingegaard and Zimmermann on five apiece.
06:46 Bjerg is still in the white jersey but his lead is down to a measly two seconds over
06:50 Johannesson, Jean-Paul Saint-Paul and Rodriguez, who are all within 20 seconds.
06:55 Saturday is a proper mountain stage.
06:57 The riders will tackle the Col de la Madeleine, the Col de Mola and the Col de la Coimbatre
07:01 4,000 metres of climbing in just 148km.
07:05 It will be spectacular.
07:06 Do join us tomorrow.
