00:00 It is Pomona's Israel Mercado
00:03 taking on Mexico's Jesus Correa.
00:07 Six rounds of boxing scheduled.
00:10 TJ DeSantis, Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher,
00:13 appreciate joining us live here on UFC Fight Pass
00:15 for Tom Loeffler and 360 Promotions
00:18 Hollywood Fight Nights.
00:19 [crowd shouting]
00:23 [whistle blows]
00:25 [crowd shouting]
00:28 You ready?
00:31 [bell dings]
00:32 Here we go, we are underway.
00:34 Mercado in the silver.
00:36 Correa in the blue.
00:38 You'll see a lot of head and upper body movement
00:46 from Mercado.
00:47 He has a loose but aggressive boxing style,
00:51 but he likes to work off his jab.
00:53 Sometimes he keeps his hands down at his waist.
00:57 We'll see if he can get away with that against Correa.
01:00 Correa's one of those dudes he gets in mid-range
01:02 or in close and then he drops hard combinations.
01:06 He's here to bomb.
01:07 Action here early.
01:19 Right in front of the body with that right hand is Mercado.
01:21 I figure both guys are gonna come in here
01:28 with a lot of confidence 'cause Correa,
01:30 he's got the confidence earned by having traveled
01:33 to the US before and defeated up and coming prospects.
01:38 And with Mercado, it's like,
01:39 it's that pride of having been a top rated amateur,
01:44 but also kind of earning the respect from,
01:46 you know, the top flight lightweights
01:48 that he sparred with like Teofimo Lopez and Ryan Garcia.
01:51 And now he's being trained by Jose Benavidez Sr.
01:56 So he's been training up in Seattle
01:57 at Jose Benavidez Jr.'s camp.
02:00 So he's around, you know, champion level boxers
02:03 in that whole stable.
02:05 That'll also add to a fighter's swagger.
02:08 (speaking in foreign language)
02:12 - Doubling up on the jab there is Mercado.
02:22 - Stop, stop, stop.
02:23 (speaking in foreign language)
02:27 - Two minutes down here in this opening round.
02:31 (crowd chattering)
02:34 - Good acting first round, not bad.
02:49 - Yeah, I'm trying to figure out who has the advantage.
02:53 I don't think either guy has an advantage yet.
02:55 Both men are trying to impose their style on the other.
03:00 - Neither has imposed anything yet.
03:01 - Under 30 seconds left here in this opening round.
03:09 Nice right hand fighting home for Carrillo.
03:11 - And that's what I'm looking for.
03:13 You know, as this round comes to a close,
03:14 who has landed the cleaner shots?
03:17 That was a nice straight right to the body landed by Mercado.
03:20 There's another one.
03:23 (crowd chattering)
03:26 One round down, five to go.
03:34 In scheduled for six here.
03:36 Seemed like the momentum started to switch a bit
03:43 towards Mercado in the latter part of that first round.
03:47 We'll see how it can capitalize off of that.
03:49 Your thoughts on the opening statement?
03:52 - I thought it was a hard to score round.
03:55 I thought it was really close, it was competitive.
03:58 I thought Mercado, as you said,
03:59 I'm sorry, Carrillo started well,
04:01 but I thought Mercado took it in the final 30 seconds.
04:04 Those straight rights to the stomach.
04:06 - Here's some of the action, Abel Walker, sir.
04:08 - Yeah, well, Mercado, I think,
04:09 is trying to find the distance, trying to find the spot.
04:13 But he's not fighting an easy fight.
04:19 - We go inside the corner of Jesus Carrillo.
04:22 Mercado Garcia, the lead second.
04:29 Both these men have a comparable reach,
04:34 69 inches for Mercado, 68 for the Mexican and Carrillo.
04:39 Delayed, delayed knockdown.
04:42 - Three.
04:43 - Chavarri's issuing the count.
04:46 - Over there, six.
04:49 (speaking in foreign language)
04:53 - Carrillo can recover here.
04:54 - We'll see if Mercado goes for the knockout.
05:00 Or at least tries to score another knockdown.
05:04 - Aggressive here is Carrillo.
05:07 He's recovering.
05:10 - Carrillo recovers quickly.
05:14 - Yeah.
05:15 - That was a legit knockdown.
05:17 - He felt something that put him to a knee.
05:19 And now he's up and he's pressing the action.
05:22 Forcing Mercado to the ropes.
05:24 Mercado might have stung him with another right cross, though.
05:29 - Carrillo definitely game here as he was knocked down,
05:34 but still very much in this fight.
05:35 One minute down in round number two.
05:37 - Carrillo's chin can hold up.
05:40 We have the Macans for a sweet shootout.
05:46 - His legs may not be 100%
05:48 - It's 360 promotions of Carrillo.
05:50 There you go.
05:51 - Did just that.
05:52 - Very nice.
05:52 With a smile on his face.
05:55 He has a sense of humor about it.
05:57 - Halfway point of the round.
06:02 - Looks like Carrillo's a bunch of choices to book.
06:05 - Puts a lot behind him.
06:07 - I'm impressed by Carrillo's ability to recover.
06:15 Trying to throw some offense away from Mercado now.
06:17 - I really like the way Mercado's going up the middle
06:21 with an uppercut, trying to get the separation
06:24 of the hands to come back outside.
06:26 - You see the upper body movement.
06:32 He can be right in front of Carrillo
06:37 and he can kind of lean in and out of range.
06:40 (crowd cheering)
06:43 - Stop.
06:51 My break.
06:51 - Mercado's slowing Carrillo's
06:53 movement down here.
06:54 Grabs a clinch.
06:55 Now back at space.
06:56 30 seconds left here in round number two.
07:02 - Ooh.
07:05 - Is that going to count as a knockdown?
07:06 - Yes.
07:07 - It looked like Mercado was off balance,
07:09 but he went down in a punch.
07:11 - That is a huge statement for Carrillo
07:13 to get that knockdown here in the second round.
07:15 - Yeah.
07:16 - We got replay.
07:17 We got replay.
07:19 - And it's rare you see traded knockdowns
07:20 in a single round.
07:22 - Right hand to the left.
07:27 Matchup here to close this second round.
07:30 - So with the 10 point must system,
07:35 I'm scoring that round even.
07:37 I'm going to make it 10-10 in case people are wondering.
07:40 - I appreciate the help.
07:42 - They map this hard in general.
07:45 - Inside the corner here of Carrillo, you know,
07:49 really solid stuff by the Mexican to get dropped early
07:53 and then come back.
07:54 I mean, we'll see what happens.
07:56 - There's a lot left in this fight here.
07:58 - Yeah. I think he recovered quickly.
08:00 - There's the delayed effect.
08:02 It was a right cross, like just above his ear.
08:05 And Carrillo got up.
08:07 - Oh, here? Okay. Here's a, yeah.
08:08 - And he recovered quickly.
08:12 - I had the three judges and the supervisors
08:15 who would do what it stands.
08:17 - Your thoughts on that knockdown?
08:18 - He hits you.
08:19 - Not much of a knockdown.
08:20 It was a left hook, but it wasn't, I think he was,
08:23 he got tangled.
08:25 - The right hand landed squarely.
08:26 And then I think Mercado got sort of tripped up
08:30 in the ropes and then a grazing left hook sent him down.
08:33 - Well, round number three underway.
08:37 Whether it was the cleanest knockdown,
08:39 it was regardless.
08:40 Mercado gonna have to respond and gentlemen,
08:43 we've got a pretty good fight on our hands.
08:45 - Oh, no doubt about it.
08:48 If I was going to give a fighter the edge in that round
08:52 where they traded knockdowns,
08:53 I'm going to give it to Mercado
08:55 because I don't think Mercado was hurt.
08:56 - Right.
08:57 - I think Carrillo was actually hurt.
08:59 - I mean, you could see the replay.
09:00 Carrillo really couldn't find his feet.
09:02 - Yeah.
09:03 - Underneath him.
09:04 - But man, he acquitted himself well, didn't he?
09:05 - He did.
09:06 - Stop, stop, my break.
09:13 Separate, separate.
09:14 (crowd shouting)
09:17 - This is round number three, scheduled for six.
09:28 TJ DeSantis, Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher,
09:32 appreciate you joining us here live on the UFC Fight Pass
09:34 for Tom Laughlin in 360 Promotions,
09:36 Hollywood Fight Night.
09:38 Carrillo really commits to that left hook.
09:46 It's a right hand by Mercado,
09:48 tries to answer with his own.
09:49 Swing and a miss by the Mexican with that uppercut.
10:00 (crowd shouting)
10:02 - Stop, stop.
10:06 Hey, scooch a minute, don't hold.
10:08 (crowd shouting)
10:10 - Nice right to the body from Carrillo.
10:20 (crowd shouting)
10:30 - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, bring him up.
10:32 - One minute remains here, round number three.
10:34 Crowd here coming live for Israel Mercado.
10:43 Head movement here on display by the Mexican Carrillo.
10:50 - I think Carrillo had a really good two minutes
10:56 of this round.
10:57 I think Mercado's boxing nicely now,
11:00 this final minute.
11:01 I don't know if it's enough to take the round though.
11:04 I think Carrillo has landed the real punches of substance.
11:09 He's definitely outworked Mercado in this round.
11:12 - The spot should be as close as you can to Mercado
11:16 in the ring, but Mercado isn't even moving.
11:18 - Yeah.
11:19 You're saying, Abel, for Carrillo,
11:25 the closer the better, kind of smiling.
11:27 - Yes, smiling, yes.
11:29 Mercado needs a little more room.
11:32 - Three rounds in the books.
11:34 Doug, your thoughts and how you would score that
11:39 on your unofficial scorecard.
11:41 - I've got it even, 29-29.
11:44 The first round went to Mercado,
11:46 second round I scored even,
11:48 and the third round I thought Carrillo edged it.
11:51 - Take a look at some of the action here, Abel.
11:55 Walk us through.
11:56 - Yeah, Carrillo had the better part
11:58 of the first of this round.
12:00 In the first two minutes,
12:01 and I think Mercado came on,
12:02 with Carrillo being close, he was able to land,
12:04 and Mercado needs a little more room.
12:06 So I believe that Carrillo needs to be
12:10 as close to him as possible,
12:11 and moving his hands, moving his body,
12:13 moving his upper body, moving his head,
12:15 but just landing short punches.
12:17 - Inside the corner here of Israel Mercado.
12:21 Doug Fisher, you have an even after three.
12:23 What would you like to see Mercado do
12:25 to start to take this fight down the stretch?
12:27 - I'd like to see Mercado use that slight reach advantage,
12:31 put that amateur background into play,
12:35 and really work off his jab.
12:37 Don't let this guy get too close,
12:38 'cause that's what he wants.
12:40 He's a guy who needs to be right in front of you,
12:43 needs to be at least mid-range,
12:44 likes to be chest to chest,
12:46 and that's his element,
12:47 so control the distance with the jab,
12:49 and you do that with not just the jab,
12:50 but lateral movement.
12:52 But he's gotta get respect.
12:53 He's also gotta land body punches,
12:55 gotta land power punches,
12:56 gotta land that right cross.
12:58 But I think it starts with the jab.
13:02 - Stop, stop, stop.
13:06 Should I punish him?
13:08 - That's another thing.
13:09 If you let Carrillo in, Carrillo will,
13:11 he'll tie you up.
13:12 He'll hold, and he'll get rough in there, too.
13:15 (crowd cheering)
13:17 Volume here by Mercado.
13:25 Rio, though, in his face,
13:29 marching him down.
13:30 (crowd cheering)
13:36 More volume here from Mercado.
13:43 (crowd cheering)
13:45 I'm impressed with the comfort from Carrillo,
13:46 because again, talking about when he ate that shot
13:50 earlier in the fight,
13:51 it looked like he didn't have his wits about him,
13:53 but he's definitely got him back in,
13:56 very much in this fight.
13:57 Halfway point of round four.
14:00 (crowd cheering)
14:03 (crowd shouting)
14:06 Now rushing is Carrillo.
14:16 (crowd shouting)
14:32 Round four.
14:33 (crowd shouting)
14:35 I think Mercado's shown us some slickness,
14:42 some punch accuracy in this round.
14:44 I do think there are moments when he's backing up
14:46 with his hands down,
14:48 and he's just leaning away from punches,
14:50 back and full some of the judges,
14:52 depending on where they're sitting.
14:54 It looked like Carrillo was landing.
14:56 - Carrillo seems to, whenever he backs up
14:58 and goes forward, seems to have better balance
15:00 than Mercado Carrillo.
15:01 - Yeah, when Mercado backs up,
15:02 he seems to be turning his body
15:04 in a completely different way.
15:05 - Right.
15:06 (crowd shouting)
15:07 And I think in his mind, it's like,
15:08 well, that's to be more elusive,
15:10 but it can look bad to the judges.
15:14 That was nice, the way he kind of slipped off
15:15 the ropes there.
15:16 (crowd shouting)
15:19 All in all, though, I think Mercado's
15:21 had a pretty decent round.
15:22 (crowd shouting)
15:24 Final 10 seconds here of round number four.
15:26 (crowd shouting)
15:29 (bell dings)
15:30 Four down, two to go.
15:31 (crowd shouting)
15:34 Abel, how would you score that round?
15:36 - I scored it for Mercado.
15:37 I think Mercado was more effective with his punches.
15:40 I just would like to see him go back against ropes,
15:42 and when he moves away, to be in better balance.
15:44 So, not so straight up in the air,
15:45 and his feet are crossed sometimes.
15:48 Well, Carrillo doesn't do that.
15:50 - Doug, do you agree?
15:52 - Yeah, yeah.
15:53 And I also scored round four for Mercado.
15:56 - You're on the same team.
15:57 - Yeah.
15:58 - So, I think he's got it.
15:59 - Yeah.
16:00 - You see all that?
16:00 Just make it work, Doug.
16:01 (crowd shouting)
16:03 - Inside the corner here of Israel Mercado.
16:06 (crowd shouting)
16:09 If you're in the corner, Doug, of Mercado,
16:13 do you talk about the way he's moving
16:15 and the way that it might be?
16:16 - Absolutely.
16:17 - Speaking to the judges?
16:18 - I would tell my fighter that, you know,
16:20 you're creating the impression
16:22 that this guy is forcing you back,
16:23 that he's landing punches.
16:25 You know, stay on your ground a little bit,
16:27 rather than go straight back.
16:28 - Yeah, move around him.
16:30 Don't back up while you're twisting and turning
16:32 with your hands down by your waist,
16:34 'cause it's just a bad look.
16:37 As I said, depending on where the judges are sitting.
16:39 - No, no, no, no, stop, stop, stop.
16:41 No grab the cabeza.
16:42 Cuidado, cuidado, okay?
16:43 - I guess depending on the judge.
16:45 (crowd shouting)
16:48 (crowd shouting)
16:51 - Right hand to the body.
16:59 My career, now trying to triple up on that jab.
17:04 - There you go, Hase.
17:05 - Nice little right hand there.
17:07 (crowd shouting)
17:10 Mercado is scoring with this jab.
17:17 - Who knows, I mean, in the eyes of the official judges,
17:21 that could be the difference between a lot of
17:23 hard to score, hotly contested rounds.
17:25 - You see some blood there over the left eye.
17:29 - No real.
17:31 - Of the Mexican career.
17:32 - It seemed like that came off of,
17:34 yeah, I think Jack Reese just motioned to somebody ringside.
17:38 Maybe the judges, that cut came off of a punch,
17:42 not a headbutt.
17:43 (crowd shouting)
17:45 - Approaching the halfway point here,
17:57 round number five, more volume this round here for Mercado.
18:00 - No, no, no, get off his head, Jesus.
18:11 - Brio very aggressive here,
18:13 but I think the quality of shots
18:15 have been landed by Mercado.
18:17 - Yeah, I would agree, and the cleaner punches.
18:19 But like I said, depending on the judge,
18:26 some judges, they'll give a lot of credit to the guy
18:28 who's making the fight, quote unquote,
18:31 making the fight coming forward and moving his hands,
18:35 even if those shots aren't landing.
18:37 - Stop, stop, stop, stop.
18:39 - Back of the clinch.
18:41 But I think that cut is proof
18:44 that Mercado's landing some quality shots,
18:46 even as he backs up.
18:48 - He was a very old season cut man in a corner
18:54 in the middle of the zone.
18:55 That cut will be taken care of.
18:57 - 30 seconds left here in round number five.
19:04 You never want to be cut, but if you're Correa,
19:06 you got to feel good about the fact
19:08 that the cut came in the fifth round
19:09 rather than the first round.
19:11 - And it doesn't, I mean,
19:13 I can't get a really good look at it.
19:16 Maybe it is getting into his eyes a little bit,
19:18 but nothing seems to bother Correa.
19:21 - Five down, one to go.
19:34 - Very good work on the cut.
19:38 (whistle blows)
19:41 - In the corner here of Correa.
19:44 Did the cut go to work on that left eye?
19:46 - That is Ruben Gomez.
19:48 A Ruben Gomez sighting.
19:49 It's been a while.
19:50 - Here's the replay.
19:52 The truck saying that the cut came from a clash of heads.
19:54 - Yeah, the heads did come together.
19:55 - It was right there.
19:57 - I don't know if Jack Reese saw that.
19:58 - He did.
19:59 - 'Cause I saw him indicate to the judges
20:01 that it was from a punch.
20:03 That's a nice right to the rib cage landed by Correa.
20:07 - And there's, yeah, there's, yeah.
20:08 It was so that the heads came together
20:10 as Correa was coming in with that body shot.
20:12 - Nice catch by the truck.
20:15 - Very good work by the guys in the truck.
20:27 - Shout out Paul Gazetta.
20:28 He's the son of the director.
20:32 Pressure's on him.
20:33 - Well, no wonder.
20:34 - Yeah.
20:35 - Boy, he's so sharp.
20:37 - Sixth and final round here underway.
20:39 Israel Mercado, Jesus Correa, TJ DeSantis,
20:42 Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher.
20:44 Appreciate you joining us here live
20:46 on UFC Fight Pass for Hollywood Fight Night.
20:48 - No, no, no, no, no, no.
20:53 - Off balance there did Mercado.
20:55 - You're right, you're good.
21:06 - Nice swing and miss with the right hand by Correa.
21:09 - I would like to see Mercado keep him at his range
21:15 in this round and just box him from the outside
21:17 and land his shots.
21:36 - The first one throwing him is Correa.
21:39 - Yeah, Correa had a nice moment there.
21:42 Let's see if he can keep it going.
21:49 - Correa very comfortable in this fight,
21:57 even though he's cut and been hit a bit,
22:00 but still very much game.
22:02 (crowd cheering)
22:05 - Stop, stop.
22:13 - Mercado backing up a bit more in this round,
22:14 playing the game more of his opponent.
22:18 Nice left hand.
22:19 (crowd cheering)
22:22 Much over a minute remains here.
22:36 They've come together for a bit of a firefight
22:41 in this final round.
22:42 - Yeah, some nice shots now from Mercado.
22:45 Mercado is making pretty good miss
22:46 and making them pay with counter shots.
22:50 - Correa causing the sweat to fly off of Correa's head.
22:54 But I still feel like it's anybody's round.
23:01 30 seconds to go.
23:02 - Maybe each day can happen with every round.
23:09 - Inside the final 30 seconds of this fight.
23:18 - Correa pushing forward in this clinch.
23:22 Zachary's gonna separate him.
23:25 Final 10 seconds.
23:26 (bell ringing)
23:37 - Good fight.
23:38 That was a close round.
23:40 I think Mercado just edged it.
23:42 (crowd cheering)
23:47 - We have two celebs come out tonight
23:49 at Hollywood Fight Night.
23:50 Shawn Sweeney, the assistant head coach
23:51 of the Dallas Mavericks,
23:53 hanging out here at Commerce Casino.
23:55 Appreciate him coming out.
23:56 Appreciate you joining us on UFC Fight Pass.
24:00 Judges gonna tally their scorecards here.
24:03 Good competitive fight.
24:05 - I think so.
24:07 I've got Mercado winning it by a few points,
24:08 but I wouldn't be shocked if one or two of those rounds
24:12 that I scored for Mercado went for Correa
24:14 versus one or two of the official judges.
24:18 It's that kind of style matchup as well.
24:20 - I wouldn't be surprised if it's a draw.
24:22 - Yeah.
24:23 - That wouldn't surprise me either.
24:26 - Fun night of fights here inside the Commerce Casino.
24:37 Again, Tom Laughlin 360 Promotions,
24:39 Hollywood Fight Night.
24:42 Six rounds here with Jesus Carrillo and Israel Mercado.
24:46 All these up to our main event
24:50 a little bit later on tonight.
24:51 King Callum Walsh, the undefeated fighting pride
24:53 of Cork, Ireland is back in action.
24:56 He takes on Carson Jones.
24:58 Can't wait to see that one, but again,
25:03 competitive fight, fun fight for Israel Mercado.
25:07 Talk about him trying to make up for some lost time.
25:10 - You know, he definitely had a good showing.
25:12 We're going to see some action here.
25:14 Judges can have their hands full,
25:15 but a good competitive fight.
25:16 That's what you like to see on Fight Night, David.
25:21 - It was a nice flurry from Mercado.
25:24 He's tired.
25:25 Yeah, he's tired,
25:26 but I think in the final 30 seconds,
25:28 he was the guy landing the clean shots,
25:31 the accurate punches.
25:33 - There was a lot of talk at one time a while back
25:35 about making them five and seven rounds and nine rounds
25:38 instead of the even rounds.
25:40 - Less possibility of a draw.
25:43 - But then you get a 10-10 round and that's-
25:45 - Exactly.
25:46 Which is what I did.
25:47 Guys like me.
25:50 - All right, the judges have rendered their decision.
25:54 It rests with Joe Martinez.
25:56 - Ladies and gentlemen, after six rounds of action,
26:00 we go to the judges' scorecards and here are the totals.
26:04 Pamela Hayashida scores at 58-56, Carrillo.
26:09 Dr. Lumer at 59-55, Mercado.
26:11 And Zach Young scores at 57-57.
26:15 This bout is a split draw.
26:19 - Well, the crowd groans inside Commerce Casino,
26:24 but Abel Sanchez, I think you were right.
26:27 I think you were proven correct.
26:28 - Yeah, you know, difficult rounds to score, as Doug said.
26:32 And both guys had their moments in every round.
26:36 I think it was a fair call.
26:37 Yeah, I'm not mad at it, even though I--
26:38 personally, I think Ricardo won that fight.
26:40 Just the way--
