00:00 Hi everyone and welcome again to Creative Cakes by Cheryl.
00:02 Today I am going to show you how I made this very simple but quite impressive lipstick
00:07 cake.
00:08 You can see all the materials and equipment I have used today on screen and you can also
00:12 find a full detailed list of everything I have used in the description box below.
00:17 So let's get started.
00:19 The first thing I need to do is take one of the 8 inch cakes as well as a large round
00:24 cookie cutter and cut three circles out of my 8 inch cake.
00:28 Then I need to stack these three little cakes and using a large serrated knife I am going
00:33 to cut a nice angle out of the top of the cake and this is going to form the top of
00:38 the lipstick.
00:41 The next thing I need to do is stack the cakes.
00:44 So for the largest cake which is going to be the base of the lipstick I am going to
00:48 use an 8 inch styrofoam dummy at the bottom.
00:51 This is just to add some height and also because I don't need so much cake.
00:56 So the first thing I have done here is attach the cake set up board to the styrofoam dummy
01:01 and then I am going to stack my cakes on top adding a layer of buttercream in the center.
01:10 Now I need to go ahead and stack the other two lots of cake starting off with the cake
01:15 set up board and then stacking all the cakes with buttercream in between each of the layers.
01:26 Now here I have started covering my bottom tier of the cake with the buttercream frosting.
01:31 You can see I have only gone as far down as my cakes are.
01:35 I don't really need to cover the foam with any of the frosting.
01:38 So once I have got a nice thick layer of the frosting I am going to use this large cake
01:43 scraper.
01:44 You could also use a ruler if you don't have one of these.
01:48 I am just going to hold it right up against the cake and carefully rotate the cake scraping
01:54 off all of the excess buttercream.
01:56 Then I need to just neaten off the edge a little bit.
01:59 I don't need to be too fussy because I am going to come back and smooth this off a little
02:03 bit better in a moment once I have finished covering the other two cakes with the buttercream.
02:10 Now I am going to smooth over my buttercream and I am going to use this paper towel and
02:19 rub it over with the heel of my palm.
02:22 Just gently rubbing the paper towel over the top and sides of the cake is going to smooth
02:27 out all of the lumps.
02:31 The paper towel does leave a slight imprint into the buttercream but you don't have to
02:35 worry because it doesn't show up under the fondant.
02:39 For the top tier of my lipstick cake I want my lipstick to have a nice sharp edge so I
02:45 am just going to use a bit of boiling water to dip my spatula in and glide it over the
02:50 buttercream to get a nice crisp edge.
02:54 When I am finished I need to put all of my cakes into the fridge for at least half an
02:58 hour to become nice and firm.
03:06 Now I can start covering up my lipstick cake.
03:09 I am going to first brush on a little bit of water onto the cake and then I am going
03:13 to gently drape the fondant over the top of the cake, smoothing it down the sides, opening
03:18 up the pleats and smoothing it all the way to the bottom.
03:21 I am going to use a cake smoother to press the bottom nice and firmly into the edge and
03:27 then trim off all of the excess.
03:31 Then it is simply a matter of smoothing over the top surface and then repeating this process
03:37 for the other two tiers of the cake.
03:51 To support each of the tiers and prevent one cake from sinking into another I am going
04:10 to support them with these bubble straws.
04:12 I am just going to insert them into the cake.
04:15 Of course for this bottom tier it is only going to go as far as the styrofoam dummy.
04:20 Trim off the excess and then add the next tier to the cake.
04:34 Once my tiers are all stacked I am going to add a little strip of white fondant to the
04:39 base of the top tier.
04:46 Then I am going to paint this strip of white fondant as well as the second tier in some
04:50 silver edible paint.
05:00 I am also going to add a strip of black fondant to the base of the second tier.
05:07 Then I will add some branding to this lipstick.
05:09 And finally to make it look like it is reflecting against the light I have just added a little
05:14 strip of white fondant to the top.
05:21 I am using this hand held steamer to steam the entire cake and you can see what a visual
05:29 difference it makes.
05:32 So guys I hope you enjoyed this simple tutorial of this lipstick cake.
05:36 Essentially it is a three tier cake with a little bit of a twist.
