00:00 Hello and welcome to Cupcake Addiction's Giant Princess Castle Cupcake where today I'm going
00:10 to be showing you how to make this adorable giant cupcake that looks just like a princess
00:14 castle, every little princess' dream.
00:17 If you haven't already checked out my Princess Playlist, I will leave a link to that in the
00:20 description box below.
00:21 But in it, we show you how to make princess cupcakes, princess cake pops, princess cookies,
00:26 pretty much everything you'll need to make your princess party absolutely perfect.
00:31 Tools and equipment that you'll need for today's tutorial, I've got some fondant in white,
00:35 purple and pink.
00:36 I've got a plunge cutter which is a flower shape but any flower-shaped cutter will do.
00:41 A pizza cutter.
00:42 I've got an iced cake board so I will leave a link to our tutorial on how to ice a cake
00:45 board in the description box below.
00:49 I've got some melted candy melts or colored chocolate in pink and purple.
00:53 And I've also got a little container of edible pearl sprinkles just to give a little bit
00:57 of detail.
00:58 I've pre-prepared our giant cupcake today using our Giant Cupcake Basics series which
01:03 I'll also link to in the description box below.
01:05 I've used a pink cupcake case instead of a chocolate case.
01:08 And I'll also be showing you in this tutorial how to turn that basic giant cupcake into
01:12 a surprise piñata candy-filled giant cupcake.
01:16 I've got some of our perfectly pipeable buttercream frosting in purple.
01:19 I've got that in a disposable piping bag today paired with a large open round piping tip.
01:24 And I will link to our buttercream recipe in the description box below.
01:29 I've got some cornflour, a little bit of tap water.
01:32 My candy today, I'm using some musk-flavored Lifesavers.
01:35 These are pink Lifesavers with the hole through the middle.
01:38 So if you can't find musk specifically, what you're looking for is a roll candy about this
01:43 size that does have that hole through the middle.
01:46 So you may need to have a think about what your equivalent might be depending on where
01:49 you live.
01:50 You'll need a toothpick.
01:51 I've also got a paintbrush, a fondant rolling pin, a knife, a serrated knife, a spoon and
01:56 I've got a couple of miniature ice cream cones with the pointy tips.
02:01 Off to the side, I've got a little bit of egg crate and I've pre-made some little pink
02:05 flowers using that little plunge cutter.
02:06 I'll be showing you how to do that later in today's tutorial.
02:10 So let's get started.
02:11 The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to take that plain old regular
02:13 cupcake and turn it into a surprise piñata.
02:16 So carve it down as you normally would and then you want to take a circle cutter.
02:19 So I will leave dimensions for this circle cutter in the description box below.
02:23 Basically, you want to carve out a circle but you don't want to go right through the
02:26 base of the cupcake.
02:28 You want to carve it out on that bottom half and then you want to carve out the top section
02:32 of the top half or the centerpiece before using your knife to cut around it.
02:36 You don't want to try and push that circle cutter all the way through because you're
02:39 probably going to split that top section.
02:41 Take a bit of your ganache, put it into your cupcake case as usual before sticking down
02:45 that bottom piece.
02:46 A little bit more ganache on the sides but try not to get it in that little hole that
02:50 you've carved out.
02:51 And then pop on your next piece.
02:53 You can put a little bit more ganache on the top here, once again, not getting it inside
02:57 the hole.
02:58 Take your candy and I've chosen all princess-colored candies in pinks and purples and push them
03:03 into that hole.
03:04 I like to push these down on top because I want there to be a really nice satisfying
03:08 spill effect when the birthday girl cuts into her cake.
03:11 Take the top down and then I just like to cut the very very top of the point off before
03:15 adding that ganache as a bit of a crumb coat just like we would for a normal giant cupcake.
03:20 If you've got any questions about the making and the baking of the giant cupcake, make
03:24 sure you check out that Giant Cupcake Basics Series which will answer everything you need
03:28 to know to get your cupcake to this stage ready to decorate.
03:31 Alright now for the decorating, we're going to start with our little tops of our turrets.
03:35 So you want to take those miniature ice cream cones and we're going to roll them around
03:38 in that purple candy melt about up to the line where it kind of splays out to the little
03:43 ice cream cup.
03:44 Give it a good shake off and then just pop it off to the side.
03:46 You want to do this first because these actually take quite a while to dry.
03:49 Now you want to take your roll candy, you can see the little hole in mine, unwrap either
03:53 end but not the rest of the candy.
03:55 Pour some of that melted pink chocolate or pink candy melt into a ziplock bag, seal it
03:59 up and snip off just a little fine tip.
04:02 Fill the center of your roll candy with that melted chocolate.
04:05 You want to get it all the way to the top but just check the bottom to make sure you
04:08 can see a little bit of that chocolate poking through and make sure that it's really nice
04:11 and full.
04:12 Take a bit of your pink fondant now and I always put down a bit of cornflour first but
04:15 we're just going to make a couple of these daisies.
04:18 Using that plunge cutter, you just want to push down into your fondant, give it a plunge
04:22 and then release your flour.
04:23 Pop it into the egg crate and ideally these should be done about 4 to 6 hours in advance.
04:28 That's just going to give them time to set so they've got a bit of structure and a bit
04:30 of shape before they go onto your finished product.
04:33 Take about a teaspoon of your melted pink chocolate, stick it on your cake board and
04:37 this is going to be used to glue your giant cupcake to the base.
04:40 Using your piping bag and that purple frosting, you just want to do like a line around the
04:44 rim and then use your knife just to smooth that down.
04:47 This is just going to be to make sure there's no ganache peeking through in between the
04:51 purple frosting and the pink base.
04:53 For our top, we want to make a tiled effect.
04:56 So you want to squeeze out and as you squeeze out, you also are flattening off.
05:02 So essentially you're squeezing out like a dot of frosting and then using the piping
05:06 tip to flatten the back of it off.
05:08 So what you get are these really cute little kind of petal effects.
05:11 You want to do that all the way around that bottom layer and when it comes to doing your
05:14 second layer, you want to make sure that you're overlapping in between the creases of each
05:18 of those petals.
05:20 Keep on using that technique all the way around the cupcake and when you come to the top,
05:23 you're just going to need to do a couple of really cute, neat petals all coming into the
05:28 center.
05:29 You want to take your purple fondant now, once again with a bit of cornflour.
05:32 Roll that purple fondant out really nice and thin.
05:35 Use your pizza cutter to cut just a bit of a rectangle shape and we're just going to
05:38 measure it up the side of our cupcake case before rounding off one side of it.
05:43 This is going to make like our little door.
05:44 Put a little bit of just plain tap water on the back and then position it up against your
05:48 giant cupcake.
05:49 Position it first before using your fingers to push it down so it's nice and secure.
05:53 Use the rest of that fondant to cut a couple of thinner rectangles.
05:56 And we're going to use this to kind of cut a couple of cathedral-style windows.
05:59 So I cut one, stick it back down on the piece of fondant and use that as my template to
06:03 cut the second so they're both the same.
06:05 Once more, a little bit more water on the back.
06:08 And either side of your door, you just want to stick down your two little windows.
06:12 Use your serrated edge knife to trim that ice cream cone just to the line where you've
06:15 dipped it.
06:16 And you'll see there it fits perfectly on top of my roll candy.
06:19 Your chocolate should be set.
06:20 So when you unwrap that roll candy, what you've got is all of the candy sticking together
06:24 and a really nice, firm support base for your turrets.
06:27 Roll out a bit more of your purple fondant now.
06:29 Get that really nice and thin.
06:31 And then you just want to sort of measure up the thickness of your turrets before cutting
06:34 off a couple more of those rectangle strips.
06:37 We're going to cut essentially 4 really small cathedral windows.
06:41 So I've done 4 turrets, 4 tops and 4 cathedral windows so that we've got 4 turrets on our
06:46 princess castle.
06:47 A little bit of water on the back of each of those.
06:50 And you just want to apply them onto those roll candies.
06:52 The water's going to stick them straight on.
06:54 But make sure you leave a little bit of room at the top for that turret to go on so the
06:57 turret's not covering over the window.
07:00 Once you've completed all 4 of those, you stick the turrets on by simply dipping the
07:04 top of your roll candy into your melted candy melts or chocolate and using that as a glue
07:09 to affix the turret.
07:10 If you can't find those pink lifesavers, here's a roll of white ones that I actually covered
07:14 myself in a thin roll of pink fondant.
07:17 We're going to make some of that draping.
07:19 So get your white fondant now and you want to roll it out as thin as you possibly can.
07:23 Cut it into a couple of sort of big, chunky rectangle sort of shapes.
07:28 And there's no exact size or shape here.
07:30 You want to fold that like an accordion.
07:32 So flip it over, fold one side towards you and then turn the whole piece and fold it
07:36 back.
07:37 Repeat that process until you've got 3 or 4 folds.
07:40 Now you just want to use your fingers just to kind of splay it out a little bit.
07:43 But don't worry if it's not too neat here.
07:44 And then just kind of kink it into a bit of a semicircle.
07:46 You're going to need about 5 or 6 of those to go all the way around this cake.
07:50 Once you've got them done, you want to just trim off the edges.
07:53 And then we're going to use a little bit of that melted purple chocolate to affix it straight
07:57 to the side of the cupcake case.
07:59 But don't affix it to the frosting or it will fall off.
08:01 You actually want to use chocolate to affix it to that chocolate cupcake case like so.
08:06 Start in the middle of the door for your first 2 drapes so that your first 2 drapes meet
08:10 perfectly in the center of the front of your cupcake.
08:14 And then you can go around either side because if you're going to have any shorter drapes,
08:18 you want those ones to be at the back.
08:20 Once you've got all of your drapes applied, you can take some of those flowers which should
08:22 be kind of set by now, a little bit of chocolate on the back.
08:26 And I just applied them in between the little joins of the drapes so you couldn't see where
08:30 they joined.
08:31 Your castle should be looking something like this.
08:34 It's time to insert those turrets.
08:35 So as I push these in, I'm kind of twisting them with my fingers.
08:39 Be really gentle.
08:40 That melted chocolate is going to hold them together but you don't want to break them.
08:43 I did one turret in the middle, 2 shorter turrets on either side and 1 very short turret
08:48 right at the front.
08:49 For final detail, I just put a line of plain water around the rim of my door and then I
08:55 just used those little edible pearls.
08:57 The water will act like a glue.
08:58 I just used the little pearls to completely line the door and the 2 windows just to give
09:02 a little bit of bling and a bit of detail.
09:04 My castle was still missing a little something so I ended up cutting out a little love heart
09:08 out of some of that pink fondant and sticking it to the front door.
09:11 So there you've got your completed, absolutely gorgeous Princess Castle Giant Cupcake.
