00:07 The Little Red Hen, a folktale classic by Paul Galdon.
00:12 Once upon a time, a cat and a dog and a mouse and a little red hen all lived together in a cozy little house.
00:23 The cat liked to sleep all day on the soft couch.
00:30 The dog liked to nap all day on the sunny back porch.
00:36 And the mouse liked to snooze all day in the warm chair by the fireside.
00:43 So the little red hen had to do all the housework.
00:49 She cooked the meals and washed the dishes and made the beds.
00:54 She swept the floor and washed the windows and mended the clothes.
01:00 She raked the leaves and mowed the grass and hoed the garden.
01:05 One day when she was hoeing the garden, she found some grains of wheat.
01:10 "Who will plant this wheat?" cried the little red hen.
01:15 "Not I," said the cat.
01:19 "Not I," said the dog.
01:22 "Not I," said the mouse.
01:26 "Then I will," said the little red hen.
01:30 And she did.
01:32 Each morning the little red hen watered the wheat and pulled the weeds.
01:37 Soon the wheat pushed through the ground and began to grow tall.
01:43 When the wheat was ripe, the little red hen asked,
01:47 "Who will cut this wheat?"
01:49 "Not I," said the cat.
01:51 "Not I," said the dog.
01:54 "Not I," said the mouse.
01:56 "Then I will," said the little red hen.
02:00 And she did.
02:02 When the wheat was all cut, the little red hen asked,
02:06 "Now, who will take this wheat to the mill to be ground into flour?"
02:11 "Not I," said the cat.
02:14 "Not I," said the dog.
02:17 "Not I," said the mouse.
02:20 "Then I will," said the little red hen.
02:23 And she did.
02:25 The little red hen returned from the mill carrying a small bag of fine white flour.
02:33 "Who will make a cake from this fine white flour?" asked the little red hen.
02:38 "Not I," said the cat.
02:41 "Not I," said the dog.
02:44 "Not I," said the mouse.
02:47 "Then I will," said the little red hen.
02:51 And she did.
02:53 She gathered sticks and made a fire in the stove.
02:57 Then she took the milk and sugar and eggs and butter
03:03 and mixed them in a big bowl with the fine white flour.
03:07 When the oven was hot, she poured the cake batter into a shining pan and put it in the oven.
03:15 Soon, a delicious smell filled the cozy little house.
03:20 The cat got off the soft couch and strolled into the kitchen.
03:26 The dog got up from the sunny back porch and came into the kitchen.
03:32 The mouse jumped up from his warm chair and scampered into the kitchen.
03:39 The little red hen was just taking a beautiful cake out of the oven.
03:45 "Who will eat this cake?" asked the little red hen.
03:49 "I will," cried the cat.
03:51 "I will," cried the dog.
03:53 "I will," cried the mouse.
03:56 But the little red hen said,
03:59 "All by myself. I planted the wheat. I tended the wheat. I cut the wheat.
04:04 I took the wheat to the mill to be ground into flour.
04:08 All by myself. I gathered the sticks. I built the fire. I mixed the cake.
04:14 And all by myself. I am going to eat it."
04:20 And so she did to the very last crumb.
04:25 After that, whenever there was work to be done,
04:29 the little red hen had three very eager helpers.
