00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:14 This is Chris Randall, and I'm teaching you
00:15 Desert Rose, effects with just a napkin you can do.
00:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:37 At the end, I put on the best one of all, seven digits.
00:40 The trick that I've done more than any other trick in the
00:42 world, because it tries to pick up women and get their
00:45 phone number.
00:45 And in the same process, you give them your number.
00:49 That's all right here on Desert Rose.
00:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:18 There you go.
01:19 Broke.
01:19 Oh, shit.
01:20 Sorry.
01:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:29 Oh, no.
01:29 He did it!
01:31 There you go.
01:32 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:35 Hi, my name is Chris Randall.
01:36 We're here to teach you Desert Rose.
01:39 This is a great way to hand out the paper roses.
01:42 I first saw Kevin James, or David Copperfield, on
01:45 television, do the floating rose effect by Kevin James,
01:48 where he would twist a paper rose, float it in midair,
01:51 light it in midair, and it would change to a real rose.
01:55 It's an amazing, beautiful effect.
01:59 It's not a very practical bar hopping trick.
02:01 And so when I was going around and trying to pick up women
02:04 and doing a lot of bar magic, I came up with a lot of
02:08 methods to do napkin rose stuff impromptu on the spot.
02:12 First, I'm going to teach you how to
02:13 actually make the rose.
02:16 This might seem simple for some of you.
02:18 Some of you might not be.
02:20 This alone is worth the price of the DVD or
02:24 download or whatever.
02:27 So you're going to start with a cocktail napkin like this.
02:30 There's two kinds of cocktail napkins.
02:31 One is double layered, and it's more cottony and soft.
02:37 And then there's more of the cheap ones.
02:39 There's a single layer.
02:40 It's very papery, like hard.
02:43 It's not soft.
02:44 This is what you want because it'll hold the form of the
02:47 rose better.
02:48 So start with a cocktail napkin, standard size.
02:52 You take the top edge of the napkin.
02:55 You're going to fold it down about one inch.
02:58 You crease along the top.
03:06 And now you're going to make some small
03:07 tears along the top.
03:10 Michael Mode makes the napkin roses where they're colored.
03:13 And he showed me this idea of tearing the top like this to
03:16 make little petals.
03:18 It looks really cool.
03:20 So you have the one inch strip and about seven or eight
03:24 little tears along the top.
03:28 Now you're going to have the strip on the right
03:31 side right here.
03:33 And you're going to roll the napkin into a tube.
03:35 There you go.
03:45 Now once it's in the tube, the one inch with the tears is
03:48 right here.
03:49 I'm going to take my finger, put it in the middle of the
03:51 tube, finding the exact center.
03:53 Now my finger is about one inch down.
04:00 My middle finger's on the outside, thumb on the outside,
04:03 pinching everything like this.
04:05 Now you're going to twist the rose.
04:07 Just below where my finger is, I'm going to grab and begin
04:10 to twist.
04:11 With my thumb, I can fix the sides and make
04:16 it look really nice.
04:17 As you're twisting the rose, you're going to fix it and
04:21 make it look pretty and all that.
04:24 I use a lot of pressure with my hands so that the rose
04:27 doesn't start unraveling.
04:29 You really give it a little muscle as you're twisting it.
04:31 It'll keep its form better and last longer.
04:35 I've had roses that I've twisted for people last years,
04:38 and they've shown me years later.
04:39 Not a lot of magic has a good giveaway at the end, other
04:43 than a signed card, and that's not that great of a giveaway.
04:46 This is a great giveaway.
04:48 It seems personable.
04:49 Now once you've twisted down the stem, around 75% down,
04:57 you're going to stop.
04:58 Now you'll see a loose corner right here.
05:02 Grab the loose corner and you fold it up.
05:07 That's going to create a leaf here in a second.
05:09 Hold on to that corner and continue twisting down.
05:14 Now when I get to the bottom, I really twist hard to kind of
05:25 seal the end off.
05:26 You can even take and wet your fingers a little bit.
05:29 And when you twist it, it'll really seal it like that.
05:33 Now you can fix the rose.
05:35 You pull the leaf out, spread it out a little bit.
05:38 Kind of make it nice.
05:41 And there's your napkin rose.
05:46 Cool.
05:47 Now the napkin rose didn't have a lot of effects with it.
05:50 And this is where, when I was sitting around, hanging out,
05:54 trying to impress girls, I wanted a trick.
05:56 Even if it was a small trick to give away the rose.
06:00 So the move I started playing with and came up with is this.
06:04 You're going to flip the rose down and up.
06:06 And that's it.
06:07 It's very simple.
06:09 Hold the rose between your first finger and thumb.
06:11 Then I re-grip it between first finger, middle finger,
06:17 ring finger.
06:18 That way I can just flip it down with my thumb.
06:20 That's kind of a cool appearance.
06:24 Even that, if you do that, that's just better
06:26 than just giving out the rose.
06:28 What you can do now, now that you've made one of these,
06:32 you can make another one.
06:34 You're basically making a gimmick.
06:35 You're making an impromptu gimmick, which is kind of neat.
06:39 This is all done beforehand.
06:43 So you have another one.
06:45 You're gonna do, fold over one inch.
06:48 Start making your tears.
06:53 Roll it into a tube.
06:54 Start to twist.
07:02 Here's something you can do.
07:11 It's kind of a neat idea.
07:12 You go down to the other end.
07:13 You start one here.
07:17 (tears)
07:19 So now you have kind of a double-ended rose, like this.
07:28 Which also has a few effect ideas,
07:36 but I just rip it in half to make two gimmicks.
07:38 But there is even stuff you can do with this.
07:40 If you came out with the one rose, pluck this off.
07:46 And then it came back.
07:47 Even that's cool.
07:48 So you have an extra one.
07:51 You're gonna tear.
07:52 So this is your gimmick.
07:54 What's neat is it's kind of a crushable gimmick.
07:56 So I'll show you how to use that
07:58 and other things to do with it.
08:00 So I use this as I'm going to give away a rose
08:04 at the end of my act.
08:05 I'll do the card to mouth routine with the girl.
08:07 She gives me a kiss,
08:08 and I wanna give her something as a giveaway.
08:10 So I'll go into my case and grab the rose.
08:12 When I go into the case,
08:14 you just wanna give away the rose as a quick thing
08:16 instead of twisting it and making it a whole thing.
08:19 You're gonna need to flip this down
08:22 and add this to it.
08:24 Okay, as a nice illusion of one rose.
08:28 And so that way,
08:29 when you bring it out from your case or anything,
08:32 it looks like one rose.
08:34 When you go to hand it to the girl,
08:36 the head will fall off.
08:38 Just drop it.
08:39 Now, if you have a table or a bar situation,
08:41 you can scoop this right off the table onto the ground.
08:45 There's nothing here.
08:46 And when you bring your hands together,
08:47 just flip that up.
08:48 Act like you restore it.
08:51 It's back together.
08:54 Flash paper is really cool.
08:56 It's the cleanest way of doing it, I think.
09:00 We'll take some flash paper.
09:01 And as you get good at this,
09:07 you can twist the roses pretty fast.
09:10 And I've done this trick hundreds of times.
09:13 Even if nothing else, I've twisted thousands of roses.
09:18 So that's your gimmick.
09:26 Now, very, very important with this.
09:29 This is big key.
09:30 Fire is dangerous.
09:32 I know that we think flash paper is like magic paper,
09:35 but it's actual fire.
09:36 And the no hair on the back of my hand
09:40 is proof of that.
09:41 'Cause when I learned the Kevin James floating rose,
09:43 I did it wrong.
09:44 And thread wraps around my hand one time.
09:46 As I lit the rose, my entire hand went on fire.
09:49 So this is fire still.
09:51 And don't forget that.
09:52 So when you have the flash paper piece,
09:56 this is a regular napkin, not flash paper.
09:58 Big key.
10:00 Only the top is flash paper.
10:02 So now I don't have to worry about ditching the piece.
10:05 It'll just vanish via fire.
10:09 And watch all I'll do is the rose falls off.
10:12 Now the rose falls off.
10:13 Now, instead of picking it up, scooping it off the table,
10:16 putting it back together like this,
10:17 if you're in a bar situation,
10:20 people are smoking cigarettes
10:21 and everybody's partying it up.
10:24 You go to give the rose out,
10:25 or you can even rip it in half.
10:27 And now they light the lighter.
10:29 Make sure the paper is completely gone
10:33 before you toss it across.
10:35 As I've gotten better with it,
10:36 I can time it a little better.
10:38 So I can wait to the last second and then toss.
10:41 But if you toss too early,
10:42 you're throwing a ball of fire to paper
10:45 and you're gonna light it on fire.
10:46 So big key, do not do that.
10:48 Make sure this is gone, then toss.
10:52 And even if they don't have to toss it
10:55 too much close to the napkin,
10:58 even that, I kept the napkin way over here
11:01 and it still looks cool.
11:02 It's fire.
11:03 It's gonna distract them.
11:04 And then when their eyes kind of come to,
11:07 they'll notice that the rose is restored.
11:10 Also, because I said, this is a crushable gimmick.
11:14 So let's say you do a Leipzig torn or restored papers.
11:18 I will just crush this gimmick
11:20 as I'm putting the pieces back together.
11:22 So if you rip it in half,
11:23 as you bring your hands back together,
11:25 just start balling this up in your hands.
11:28 So now when you do this, it's a crushable gimmick.
11:30 You can get this as small as possible,
11:32 like Leipzig papers or you're hiding it in your hand.
11:34 You can use a thumb tip to vanish it.
11:37 This is a really small piece
11:39 where if you put it in a thumb tip, it's gone.
11:42 Now it's restored.
11:43 I don't have to worry about like having the gimmicks
11:48 because I can just find another napkin,
11:49 make another gimmick and it's all on the spot.
11:52 If you don't wanna use the extra piece,
11:54 you can just use one rose.
11:56 Taking the one rose, you're gonna flip this back
11:59 as you act like you take the top off.
12:02 You make it disappear,
12:03 focusing all of your attention on where it's supposed to be.
12:06 (popping)
12:07 And then it jumps across.
12:08 Even that's a pretty cool trick.
12:10 And at least it's a trick with the paper rose.
12:13 There wasn't really any effects out there
12:14 that were practical that you can just do on the fly.
12:17 If you have any questions, the paper rose,
12:21 also you should contact Michael Moat.
12:23 He has this really cool napkin roses you can buy
12:26 where they're red and green, the top part is red
12:29 and the bottom part's green.
12:30 So when the rose is twisted,
12:31 you have this really nice giveaway rose for people.
12:34 Also, you can do color changes with it.
12:37 With those napkin roses,
12:38 they have a white head and a red head.
12:41 So you can take the white head,
12:42 rub it like this, and it restores.
12:45 Here's a little tip as well.
12:46 I live in Las Vegas, my hands are very dry,
12:49 but if you have moist hands
12:51 or something cool you can do with this,
12:53 I would lick my thumb for me or grab a glass of water
12:56 and get the condensation off it.
12:58 But the napkin sticks to your thumb really good,
13:00 so when you do the restoration,
13:02 and this works good if you wanna color change the roses
13:05 with Michael Moat's napkin roses that he sells
13:07 that are green and red.
13:09 I'll take the, in that little pack,
13:12 he'll give you a white one or different colors
13:14 if you buy the cube.
13:16 Take the white one or a different colored one,
13:18 rip the head off,
13:19 and you can do a color changing effect with it as well.
13:22 So when you wanna do the restoration,
13:25 this is kinda neat if you're kinda sticky.
13:28 So with your thumb, as you go to like,
13:30 put the pieces back together,
13:32 you place them back together after you've ripped them apart,
13:35 and then with your thumb, you just grab the rose
13:39 and you start rubbing back and forth, like that.
13:43 As you do, you flip this up,
13:45 and because I'm a little sticky,
13:46 now I can keep that and it comes away with it.
13:50 At this point now you can crush the gimmick,
13:52 ditch it, give the rose out.
13:55 Like I said, if you have very moist hands,
13:58 it works really good.
13:59 I have a buddy who does it and just,
14:01 it looks great, so.
14:03 That's all the stuff with the napkin rose.
14:04 It's really cool that you can just pick up some napkins
14:07 and do a ton of magic with it,
14:09 and at the end, give 'em some kind of a giveaway
14:12 that they remember you by.
14:13 A year later, they will come up to you and go,
14:15 I have the rose that you made me.
14:18 There you go.
14:19 So all the napkin rose.
14:20 Thank you very much.
14:21 My name is Chris Randall.
14:23 (upbeat music)
14:27 So let's say you're doing napkin rose stuff at the bar,
14:29 and it looks like it's going pretty good.
14:32 This is a bonus for you.
14:33 This is one of my most famous tricks.
14:35 It's called seven digits.
14:37 It is a way to get somebody's phone number.
14:39 So with the napkins already on the table,
14:41 this is a great lead-in to seven digits.
14:45 So with seven digits, you pick up a napkin,
14:48 you show it both sides.
14:50 You ask the spectator to hold out their hand.
14:52 You make a little banter with them.
14:54 They squeeze the napkin.
14:55 You pick up a pen, you write above their hand.
14:58 And when they open it up, your phone number is on it.
15:01 Like this.
15:04 Okay.
15:08 It's a very simple thing.
15:10 You're just switching out pieces of paper.
15:13 One of them has your phone number on it.
15:15 You can have your wingman or your buddy slip this to you
15:18 if you're on the spot.
15:20 That's actually a really good tip.
15:21 If your friends, you know,
15:22 kind of have a signal to set up the phone number trick
15:25 for you if you're on the spot.
15:26 So write your phone number down on a cowtail napkin.
15:31 Ball it up.
15:31 And palm it in finger palm like this.
15:37 Cool.
15:38 I like a pen with a cap on it.
15:42 So when you're doing the effect,
15:43 I really adhere to the Levant Fundamental Rules
15:46 of stage magic.
15:47 And whenever palming an object,
15:49 it's best to hold another object at the fingertips.
15:53 When concealing a palmed object,
15:55 have another object in your hand.
15:57 Hence the magic wand, why we use it so much.
15:59 Cool.
16:01 So you have the phone number written down.
16:06 Okay.
16:07 Phone number written down.
16:10 You have your pen with a cap on it and you're ready to go.
16:13 So now you notice the stack of napkins.
16:15 With your right hand,
16:16 you're gonna pick up the top napkin.
16:18 And immediately I show it both sides,
16:22 saying it's blank without kind of,
16:26 I don't want them to think
16:27 there's gonna be writing on it later,
16:28 but you know, it's blank.
16:30 They don't really say it's blank.
16:32 It's not a good term for it.
16:34 But just regular napkin, hold out your hand.
16:36 And as you say, hold out your hand,
16:37 you're gonna start crushing up the napkin.
16:39 You clip it and you do the Bobo switch.
16:46 There you go.
16:48 So now you've switched them.
16:49 You put this in their hand.
16:52 Now, this is why I like the pen.
16:53 I can take the cap off the pen.
16:55 So that way I'm holding an object at my fingertips
16:57 while concealing a palmed object.
16:59 Now with the pen, you write above the person's hand.
17:03 Now, they open up the napkin.
17:09 So that's why you still have all this palmed in your hands,
17:11 but they will open the napkin themselves.
17:13 And as they do, you say, wouldn't it be incredible?
17:16 Or actually if you need a tour guide of Las Vegas,
17:18 that's the next line.
17:19 If you need a tour guide of Las Vegas or wherever from,
17:22 now you know where to find one.
17:23 And when they open it up, they find your number
17:26 and they have the number for a tour guide around Las Vegas
17:29 or their date for the evening.
17:31 So your number has been given to them.
17:34 Now, if it looks like they're really excited
17:36 and you wanna get their number,
17:37 you still have this palmed in your hand.
17:39 What I do is take the pen.
17:40 I just touch the top of it like this,
17:43 letting the other one drop out from below.
17:45 I just produced the ball somehow.
17:48 I pulled it out of the cap.
17:51 Any pen and coin cap stuff, whatever, just, okay.
17:56 That's not a really crazy trick for them.
17:59 It's not a trick at all, I think.
18:01 It's just gonna lead into the part
18:03 where you're gonna get their number.
18:04 So you'll tap, their number's here.
18:06 Now I take the pen, I do the flip stick vanish.
18:09 Okay, you can do it a lot of different ways.
18:12 But you're just taking the pen
18:15 and flipping it into your hand.
18:18 Keep your wrist straight.
18:20 When you have a larger wand,
18:21 you're gonna keep your wrist straight.
18:23 With your other hand,
18:25 you're gonna give a little tension this way.
18:27 And so that way when it vanishes,
18:29 it has a nice instant vanish to it.
18:32 Okay, and get used to flipping it back out
18:36 and in and back and out.
18:38 If you're younger and you're in school,
18:39 this will give you something to do all day.
18:40 That's how I learned it.
18:42 So the pen vanishes.
18:44 And now I look down at the napkin
18:46 and I say, "Wouldn't it be incredible
18:48 "if your number was on there?"
18:51 They will kind of freak out and go, "No way!"
18:54 And as they start to open it,
18:55 they're gonna realize, "No way, there's no number on it."
18:59 So the number's gone, nothing's on it.
19:02 And they look up to you.
19:04 You snap your fingers, reproduce the pen, uncap the pen,
19:09 put that in front of them and say, "Like I said,
19:11 "wouldn't it be incredible if your number was on there?"
19:14 Nine times out of 10, they write their number down,
19:16 they give it to you, and you start
19:18 a long, happy life together.
19:20 (upbeat music)
19:23 (upbeat music)
19:26 (upbeat music)
19:28 (upbeat music)
19:31 (upbeat music)
19:33 (upbeat music)
19:37 (upbeat music)
19:39 (upbeat music)
19:42 (upbeat music)
19:45 (upbeat music)
