00:00 Hey, I'm Oz Perlman and this is the instructional video for True Love.
00:14 This is an anniversary waltz type effect.
00:16 In essence, a double faced card is used whereby two cards seemingly selected at random fuse
00:22 together with signatures on both sides.
00:23 That's the classic.
00:25 This is my direct handling of it.
00:27 What you're going to need for this routine is a double faced card.
00:30 You actually need lots of these.
00:31 I highly recommend picking up here at Penguin the double faced deck, which will give you
00:35 52 cards, all of which are double facers.
00:37 You're going to be going through one per performance.
00:39 You're going to be giving this away.
00:40 It's a great souvenir.
00:41 You're going to need a double backer.
00:44 You're only going to need one of these.
00:45 Maybe after time it'll wear out and you'll want another one, but this never gets used
00:49 up.
00:50 This is reusable in each effect.
00:51 Simply two backs on both sides.
00:54 I highly recommend picking up a special assortment pack as there are double facers in there,
00:59 double backers, whether you want blue, red, whatever.
01:01 It's just a good thing to have a good side item.
01:03 Anyway, I digress.
01:05 True Love.
01:06 Here is the way to begin this routine.
01:09 You have the two cards, the double facer and the double backer on the bottom of the pack
01:13 of cards.
01:15 This is a finale.
01:16 This is something you want to close with.
01:18 So if you want to have these two gaffs set up, here's how you can ring them in at a moment's
01:24 notice.
01:25 You can keep them out of the deck at the beginning.
01:26 When you come up to approach a table, with your fingers, feel one, two cards.
01:32 Put your finger in between those cards.
01:33 This is casually while pattering.
01:35 Let everything else fall out and leave those two in the box.
01:40 I've just left the double backer and the double facer in the box.
01:44 Keep in mind, these are signed.
01:45 When you perform this, they're going to be unsigned, of course.
01:49 You perform whatever effects you're going to do with the cards.
01:52 When you're ready for the trick, you put the cards away as if you're done and then you
01:56 reconsider.
01:57 You know what?
01:58 One last thing for you guys.
01:59 Since you're a couple, how long have you been together?
02:01 Ask some sort of question.
02:03 You've rung in the gaffs.
02:05 They are now in the deck.
02:06 Now, the first moves you're going to do are going to be an overhand shuffle, retaining
02:11 the bottom card.
02:13 Here's how this works.
02:14 You squeeze with your fingers.
02:15 Notice how these three fingers are squeezing against the bottom card.
02:19 I pull all of the bottom half except for that bottom card away.
02:24 I'm squeezing that, keeping it in place, and now I shuffle off, making sure the last card
02:29 shuffled goes to the top.
02:32 All I've done is move the double backer from the bottom position to the top of the deck
02:37 while retaining the double facer on the bottom.
02:39 I'm going to try that one more time just so you can see it.
02:42 Here's an exposed view.
02:44 I'm retaining the bottom card in position with my fingers while pulling aside the bottom
02:50 half, running, running, running.
02:52 You can deal with these as much as you want.
02:54 Shuffle them off.
02:55 Just make sure that the last card that goes on top is a single card.
03:00 Turn the pack over.
03:02 You're going to do an identical move.
03:03 This is all done while patterning.
03:05 Retain what's now the bottom card, in essence, the double backer, where it is.
03:10 Keep it there.
03:11 Pull off the bottom.
03:14 As you begin this overhand shuffle, the first card I'm going to shuffle is going to be in-jogged.
03:19 That means I'm going to shuffle it off in-jogged.
03:22 That means it goes in about an inch or so from the rest of the cards and continue to
03:26 shuffle the rest.
03:29 Just so you can freeze and see what that looks like.
03:31 This card is the card right above my face-up double facer.
03:37 That's going to allow me to get a break by lifting up on this card with my thumb, insert
03:42 my pinky, and square up.
03:44 Now I have a break above my double face card.
03:48 That's the card I'm about to force using a dribble force.
03:50 Now let's go into the dribble force.
03:53 Something to be aware of is if you were to just dribble these cards right away, they
03:56 might flash this bottom double backer.
03:59 Before you do any type of dribbling, just to dribble, you're just letting cards fall
04:04 off your fingers.
04:05 You're just simply squeezing between your thumb, middle and ring fingers with your forefinger
04:08 and just letting them fall.
04:10 With all gravity, fall off your fingers.
04:15 Before we start that, I'm going to let this card along with three or four other ones stay
04:19 in my hand.
04:20 So I'm just undercutting some of the cards at the beginning.
04:24 The reason is you don't want this card to fall by itself and flash the double back nature.
04:29 I watch their mouth and I say as I go whenever you want, say the word "stop" and I let them
04:33 fall slowly.
04:35 I have a thumb break here above the double facer.
04:39 Now something to note, look up for a moment so I can show you, is that your lips purse.
04:43 When somebody says the word "stop" their mouth has to close slightly before they say it.
04:46 They go "stop" and their mouth comes together.
04:49 So you can anticipate that moment.
04:51 You can watch and you can see that moment when they're about to say "stop" and so you
04:55 can time it accordingly with your force.
04:58 So take a look.
04:59 I'm going to be watching their lips.
05:00 They're going to say "stop" and I'm going to let it fall right at that moment.
05:04 It's something you have to practice and it's a bit of timing, but as long as you watch
05:07 their mouth you'll be able to notice when they're about to say it and time your dribble
05:09 force accordingly.
05:11 Now let me show you what if they're real picky and they want to wait until almost the last
05:15 card.
05:16 The way I would do it then is as I let them fall I'm going to let my selected card pass.
05:22 If I know I've missed the force I let it pass and as I dribble some more I dribble to an
05:26 in jog.
05:28 As I'm dribbling I just pause for a moment and I dribble an in jog.
05:32 That means that I've let the cards fall just like before, in jogged, and back forward and
05:37 I go really quick.
05:38 I go "oh you missed it, you got to go faster this time."
05:41 So I make a joke out of the fact that they didn't hit the force card, they went too fast
05:44 and I let it go.
05:46 I do it again and this time I will force them.
05:48 So I'll say "go ahead and say stop a little sooner today, there, great."
05:51 I deal it down and I put my finger on here while they're signing it.
05:56 The reason is you don't want them to pick this up because they're going to flash the
05:59 double-faced nature.
06:00 This is an audience management moment.
06:02 Hold it down while they're doing the signature.
06:05 They've signed it, good.
06:07 If you feel that somebody is a little bit touchy-feely, move it towards yourself a little
06:11 closer so they don't anticipate and try and take the card for any reason.
06:15 You turn towards the other spectator, the other person in the couple.
06:18 You're going to take about half the deck and you're going to shuffle.
06:22 And remember, our double backer that we're about to force is on top of the deck.
06:26 And as I shuffle I get an in jog with the first card.
06:29 In jog the first card and then shuffle off.
06:34 Because it's a virtually identical situation to before, all I need to do to get a break
06:38 is lift up on the in jog, put my pinky inside, and square it all up.
06:43 And now we're going to do the exact same thing and do a dribble force face down for the other
06:47 spectator.
06:49 So I let the cards fall, they say "stop," and I time it accordingly and I deal the double
06:53 backer down onto the table.
06:57 Now notice when you deal this, you don't want to deal it directly on top of the other signed
07:00 card, deal it next to it and put the deck aside.
07:04 You're now going to pick up the double facer, place it on top of the double backer side
07:08 jogged.
07:09 So one is over to the right, here's the double backer.
07:13 Now what we're about to do is a two card monte move.
07:15 In essence, in the act of turning these over, it's a very subtle move that makes it appear
07:21 as if you're seeing this card and you're seeing two different backs and two different faces
07:25 of two different cards.
07:26 In reality, you're seeing the same double facer two times and the same double backer.
07:31 Here's how it works.
07:33 This little click subtlety helps tremendously.
07:35 I'm going to mention that they've already signed their card to this spectator, so it
07:39 only makes sense that you go ahead and sign your card.
07:42 As I'm tapping this like so, and I turn my hands over, here's what happens.
07:48 My thumb is going to push this top card over to the left, while simultaneously my fingers
07:55 are going in.
07:56 So this is the motion.
07:58 These fingers go in and bend, my thumb extends out.
08:02 This is the motion.
08:03 This is an exposed view without turning over.
08:06 This card gets pushed to the left, and this card gets pulled to the right.
08:10 Done at speed, actually I'll slow it down, half speed, you're seeing this is that illusion
08:14 of you seeing this card and it being this back.
08:19 If you do it with the tapping noise and you maintain the tap on both sides, it's very
08:23 powerful.
08:24 You go ahead and sign this card, so you know what, you go ahead and sign your card as well.
08:27 You pull this off and you have them sign their name.
08:30 In essence, they think they've just seen two separate cards selected.
08:32 They see two cards and they've seen themselves sign each side.
08:36 This is truly an amazing moment because in their mind, it couldn't be any more separate.
08:40 In a lot of these routines, the flaw is that there's only one card in play at any one moment.
08:45 Here, there's two cards.
08:47 Two cards and they're literally seeing signatures on both cards.
08:51 Very powerful.
08:52 Now, for the revelation.
08:56 The cards are going to be squared up and placed in your hand.
09:00 So at this moment, they've signed them.
09:01 You're going to square them up and it's going to be in a deeper mechanic's grip.
09:05 This is mechanic's grip.
09:06 This is somewhat of a gambler cop position.
09:09 The cards sit right here.
09:11 Notice how the card is sitting right in my hand and it's overlapping the edge of my hand
09:14 slightly.
09:16 At this point, I tell somebody to hold out their hand.
09:19 This is done for two purposes.
09:20 One, it gives me the misdirection of moving these cards a little bit further back and
09:25 positioning the bottom one into gambler cop.
09:27 Second, it gives them a moment to put their hand forward because you're going to place
09:30 the card in their hand.
09:32 I lift up on one card and I put this in their hand.
09:35 Notice the attention is here, focused on this hand.
09:38 My left hand, so you can see what the gambler cop looks like, is going to turn the card
09:43 down.
09:44 I notice this is concealed, so I'm going to show you an exposed view.
09:46 See how that corner is nestled right in between my ring and middle finger?
09:50 This edge goes along the meat of my thumb, this big hunk of meat right by my thumb.
09:54 Your hand drops casually to your side.
09:57 Nobody is going to be looking here.
09:58 Don't act guilty.
09:59 Don't be tense about it.
10:00 Just let your hand casually relax.
10:02 Imagine there's nothing there and it'll show that way.
10:05 The card gets placed in their hand.
10:07 Now, suiting actions to words, I'm going to tell the other person to hold their hand out
10:10 and place their hand on top.
10:12 Notice what I'm doing here.
10:14 I'm showing them in a gesture what I want them to do and I'm simultaneously concealing
10:19 the card and gambler cop.
10:20 My hand goes on top of this one and then turns up.
10:23 Be very aware of your angles.
10:24 You don't want to turn up first and then put your hand or it's going to flash.
10:28 You want to bring your hands together and then turn them together like this.
10:31 I'm concealing this card and gambler cop in my right palm.
10:35 Now, the spectators are suiting actions to words and they're both putting their hand
10:38 on here.
10:40 I don't even mention it but at this moment, I palm the card off and I simply move the
10:44 deck out of the way.
10:46 That's it.
10:47 The deck just moves over.
10:48 Don't point it out.
10:49 It'll be a moment that's completely forgotten.
10:50 You've palmed off the card and moved the deck out of the way.
10:53 They're both holding the cards between their hands.
10:55 This is the magic moment.
10:57 This is the moment where you're going to talk about two hearts combined.
11:00 Two lovers that have known each other for years.
11:02 You can ask how long they've known each other.
11:03 50 years they've been married.
11:07 Snap your fingers, create a moment and say, "Boom."
11:10 Open your hands.
11:12 This is when you let them discover it for themselves.
11:14 Don't say anything.
11:15 Let them see what's happened.
11:16 Let them etch this magic moment into their mind.
11:19 They're going to feel it.
11:20 Everybody's going to look to see if this is somehow glued together because this is so
11:23 strange.
11:24 Then, they see that it's their card with both their names on its side.
11:28 That's the moment when you let them keep it and say, "You'll remember today and you'll
11:31 remember me as well."
11:33 Give them both a big round of applause.
11:35 That's true love.
11:36 Now, I want to give you a second handling because the gambler cop with the palm can
11:41 be slightly intimidating.
11:42 I don't want that to shy you away from doing this effect because it's absolutely incredible.
11:46 Here's an alternate handling if you feel nervous about that or your angles don't allow it.
11:51 Here's what you're going to do instead.
11:53 You've got your double-backed card and your double-faced card.
11:57 You've just reached the moment where they've signed the second card and you've picked them
12:01 both up.
12:03 What you're going to do is have them hold out their hands.
12:05 I'd say, "Do me a favor, hold out your hand."
12:07 I'd say, "No, no, your hand."
12:09 This moment of gesturing, of saying, "Oh, no, wrong hand, the other hand," as the other
12:13 person comes over, that's going to create an offbeat moment of misdirection where you
12:17 can pick up the deck and you can ditch the top card.
12:21 I've got to break between these two with my thumb and I'm simply going to put the deck
12:26 aside.
12:27 It's as if the deck comes close for a moment.
12:29 No, come closer and my hands just blend together.
12:32 No, no, not this hand, this hand.
12:35 Notice how my hands come together for a split second, the deck goes away.
12:39 The deck touched the card for a split second, the deck gets put away, I lay it in their
12:43 hand and you continue as before.
12:45 Put your other hand on top, squeeze those two cards tight.
12:49 Make sure to say, "Squeeze those two cards."
12:50 It creates that impression.
12:51 And then, same moment, they open their hand, there's the revelation.
12:56 Give this to them to keep.
12:58 That's true love.
12:59 [music]
