00:00 Hi guys, my name is Biz. For now we're gonna keep it at that. We're here in
00:05 Romania filming something I like to call PopFly. PopFly is actually a move
00:12 where a card visually shoots out of the deck and it's clean, it's smooth. There's
00:20 a lot of variations and applications that we're gonna get into right now.

01:50 - Hi guys, thanks for buying this.
02:00 It really does mean a lot.
02:02 Now we're going to go into the explanation for the PopFly.
02:07 We're going to go step by step.
02:08 First I'm gonna show you the basic method
02:11 and then we're going to go into the different handlings
02:14 and applications to it.
02:16 But please keep in mind one single thing,
02:18 this is a very versatile move
02:20 and you can expand it in a lot of ways.
02:23 Don't be limited by what I show you.
02:25 And this is in hope that the stuff that you will come
02:29 will be better than mine.
02:30 (upbeat music)
02:34 Okay guys, so I think first of all,
02:43 I should explain how to do the actual pop
02:46 before going into any other variations
02:48 or applications to it.
02:50 So the basic idea behind it is that you have a card
02:54 and you're about half an inch out of the deck,
02:58 as you can see.
03:00 You place your pinky finger, your right pinky finger,
03:03 right hand, right hand, yes.
03:05 You place your pinky finger on the right side
03:08 of the selection, your third and middle finger
03:10 on the right side of the deck, like this.
03:14 Your thumb on the left side of the deck,
03:17 towards the end, as you can see.
03:19 And your index finger rests on top of the deck.
03:23 You start dribbling the cards on the table
03:28 while you gently push with the pinky finger
03:32 on the corner of the card, like this.
03:35 Gently push.
03:36 And as you go with the dribble,
03:38 you start pushing harder and harder
03:41 until it gets to your selection.
03:43 And then it pops.
03:46 Let me actually show you how it pops.
03:50 The card is like this.
03:53 And just when it gets to your selection,
03:57 it's gonna bend.
04:00 And because it bends, it's gonna spin out of the deck.
04:06 So the key point behind the entire pop
04:08 is that when it gets to your card,
04:13 so you push gently, the key point is that
04:16 when it gets to your card, you release the card
04:20 from the thumb, and that's what makes it pop.
04:24 Pop, yeah.
04:26 And then you continue dribbling the card.
04:28 One more time.
04:35 So you injure the card about half an inch.
04:37 Pinky on the right side of the selection,
04:40 third and middle finger on the right side of the deck,
04:43 thumb on the left, index on top.
04:45 You start pushing gently on the card.
04:49 Start riffling the deck on the table,
04:54 and you push harder.
04:55 And then when it gets to your card,
04:59 you push with the pinky,
05:03 and you release from the thumb.
05:05 And that will make it pop a hell of a lot.
05:09 Okay, the card is.
05:11 And that's it.
05:14 (upbeat music)
05:18 Okay, so now that you've learned how to do the actual pop,
05:27 and you've mastered the technique,
05:30 I think we should actually go into integrating it
05:32 into an actual trick rather than just popping
05:35 random cards from the middle of the deck.
05:37 So you have a card selected, spectator looks at it.
05:42 Then you get a pinky break above the selection.
05:48 Now there are a lot of ways to get an in jog,
05:53 but here's two I prefer.
05:54 First one, you pull the selection with the pinky finger,
05:59 and you immediately square it.
06:02 With the deck, getting an in jog like this.
06:06 Or you could pull with your pinky finger,
06:11 and then with your right hand,
06:13 while you place the deck in the right hand,
06:16 right in the position for the pop,
06:18 you square it and get the in jog.
06:21 So let's do that once again so that you get the interaction.
06:24 You like pull it with the pinky finger,
06:28 and you immediately place it in the position for the pop.
06:32 From that point on, you just go on as explained beforehand,
06:37 start dribbling the cards,
06:39 then you pop and reveal the selection.
06:43 Okay, so once more.
06:48 You have a card selected,
06:52 spectator looks at it, remembers it.
06:56 Get a pinky break above it, you pull it out.
07:01 You could either just square it with the pinky,
07:04 and go from there,
07:06 or pull it out and square it with the right hand.
07:10 And from that point on, you start dribbling the cards,
07:14 and you pop the card.
07:16 Yeah.
07:19 Okay, so here are other ways of getting into the break,
07:23 rather than the standard way of doing it.
07:26 You could have a card selected,
07:29 let's say they take it out and show it around, okay?
07:33 You take it back and you insert it
07:35 somewhere into the middle of the deck.
07:37 Then as you square it,
07:40 you get the in jog.
07:43 Okay, maybe some of you don't know the method,
07:46 so let me show it to you.
07:48 So you have the card,
07:50 out jogged, you push it to the left,
07:56 and then with your thumb, you square the side,
08:00 and you have it angle jogged,
08:03 and now just like as you do the pop fly,
08:06 you just square it using your left finger,
08:10 or just the pinky finger, and then you have an in jog.
08:13 If it's too big, you could just adjust it with the thumb,
08:18 so that it's half an inch.
08:19 Yeah.
08:23 That's one way.
08:24 The way I prefer it is to have a card peeked at like this.
08:28 So you hold the deck in your left hand,
08:31 using your index finger, you riffle the deck,
08:36 and you have the spectator memorize the card,
08:39 then you riffle that card and get a pinky break above it
08:44 as you riffle the rest of the cards on top of your pinky.
08:51 Just like that, you have a pinky break,
08:53 and from this point on, you just go into the pop fly,
08:56 pull the card out,
08:57 then apply pressure,
09:02 card pops out clean, smooth, take it,
09:07 you build some dramatic tension and turn it,
09:11 and then they go crazy.
09:14 (upbeat music)
09:16 (upbeat music)
09:19 Okay, so now that you know how to get a selection and puppet,
09:26 let's go into different ways of revealing it,
09:30 'cause there are a lot.
09:32 There are a lot, seriously.
09:35 The very first one, which I do often,
09:38 I call it the thread method.
09:39 So you're here, and you're preparing the puppet,
09:45 but instead, while you're getting the preparation
09:49 for the pop, you tell the spectator
09:52 that every card has a thread attached to it,
09:55 and the only thing you have to do
09:56 is just get the thread from their selection.
09:59 So just pretend you take a thread,
10:01 like seriously, see the thread, take it,
10:05 and then try to pull it first,
10:08 and their attention is gonna be here
10:11 when you pull it, when you pull it, sorry.
10:14 Then you start dribbling, you pull once,
10:18 but don't do anything, so pull once,
10:21 and then you pull again,
10:23 and the card will pop out of the deck.
10:25 And it really looks like there's a thread attached to it,
10:30 and just pull the card out.
10:33 So again, like take the thread,
10:37 just like that,
10:42 and you show their selection, 10 in this case.
10:47 You could go two ways with this.
10:50 You could either pull the string,
10:53 or the spectator could pull the string,
10:55 which requires a bit more practice,
10:57 but it's totally worth it.
10:59 So you tell the story, and then you have them
11:02 just take the thread, let's say they take the thread,
11:06 and they don't do anything,
11:08 just tell them pull whenever you feel like it.
11:11 So let's say they go like this,
11:13 and you start dribbling,
11:14 and even if they pull earlier,
11:18 you just do the pop immediately,
11:20 even if you drop half a deck,
11:23 it doesn't matter, 'cause they won't notice.
11:25 Okay, so if you want this to be 100% sure,
11:30 you have to get the selection
11:32 somewhere around the top of the deck,
11:34 like this, or there, it doesn't matter,
11:37 just not really towards the top.
11:39 So you need, let's say, two, like 10 cards
11:43 down into the deck, you get your in-jog,
11:48 and they'll be forced to pull the string
11:52 thus earlier, because you won't have
11:54 any more cards to dribble.
11:55 So let's say you start dribbling,
11:58 and they don't pull, if they don't pull it,
12:00 you see they don't wanna pull it,
12:02 they wanna mess with you,
12:03 you dribble the cards really slowly, like this,
12:06 and then when they pull it, just do the move,
12:09 react, it takes a little bit of practice
12:12 to react to their hand movement,
12:15 but even if you don't get it like
12:17 exactly when they pull, it doesn't matter,
12:19 'cause the card popping out of the spread
12:23 will be in the center of attention,
12:25 and they won't really notice that
12:28 you popped it a little bit later.
12:33 Yes, that's the word.
12:35 Okay, so that's the string idea.
12:39 Start dribbling, they take the thread,
12:41 they pull it out, and then they could take the card,
12:46 and then they faint.
12:50 Yes, they just faint.
12:52 Another method of revealing the card
12:58 is a method I like to call the now method.
13:02 So you get your in-jog, and you tell them
13:06 that whenever they want to see their card,
13:11 they just call out now,
13:14 and the card will pop out of the deck.
13:17 And while you say this, just stare them into the eyes,
13:20 like look into their soul, but pay attention to their mouth
13:24 so that you time the pop just when they're about to say now.
13:28 So if they say, just when they wanna open their mouth,
13:32 that's when you just pop the card.
13:34 So it looks like them saying now
13:38 actually triggered the pop.
13:41 So that's just a cool way of doing it.
13:47 You look at their face, and just when they're about
13:51 to say now, you pop it, you time it,
13:54 so that them saying now triggers the pop,
13:59 and you have yourself a miracle.
14:02 (upbeat music)
14:04 One of my favorite ways of revealing the card
14:14 is by spread.
14:17 So you like throw, just like this.
14:20 You throw the cards on the table, they spread,
14:23 and their selection is revealed.
14:26 I'm telling you how to do it.
14:30 It's really easy, you just have to do the pop fly
14:33 and throw the deck, not at the same time.
14:38 So it's something like this.
14:39 Just when you prepare to throw the deck,
14:42 you do the pop, so you like do the pop,
14:45 and then you throw the deck.
14:47 But the time between them is really, really,
14:52 really, really small.
14:53 So it's something like this.
14:55 You do the pop fly, and you throw the deck.
14:59 And the card will pop, and the deck will spread
15:02 at the same time.
15:04 Just one more time.
15:07 Have your selection, yeah.
15:11 Give your break, your in-jog, throw the deck.
15:18 One card pops, the dramatic ending, their selection.
15:24 (upbeat music)
15:27 (upbeat music)
15:30 So another way of revealing the selection
15:37 is by just doing a pop.
15:40 Not the pop fly, no, just the pop.
15:43 Like this, you have your in-jog,
15:46 and then you pop the card out,
15:48 and they take it, they look at it.
15:50 That's it, the card rotates, it pivots around this point,
15:58 and tell you how it works actually.
16:00 So just like in the pop fly, you have your in-jog,
16:05 and you apply pressure with your pinky finger,
16:08 and you do the pop, this part of the deck goes up,
16:13 but the outer left corner still applies pressure
16:19 on the other half of the deck.
16:21 And this will make the card rotate around that point.
16:25 So let's do it.
16:26 (upbeat music)
16:29 Then you do the pop, and the card will rotate
16:34 around that pivot point right there,
16:39 and it will stay like that, reveal the selection.
16:42 Once again, you have your in-jog.
16:45 One thing to remember is that it's not always gonna go
16:53 as you want it, so if the card doesn't pop,
16:58 and doesn't rotate around the deck, and it just pops out,
17:04 don't worry, just pretend like that's what you want it to do,
17:08 and they'll still be amazed, it's no problem.
17:11 Improvise.
17:12 (upbeat music)
17:22 One way of using the pop fly is for a sandwich effect.
17:26 Let's take out the two black fives.
17:29 Where's the other five?
17:31 Right here, take them, place them on the table
17:35 while we have a card selected.
17:37 Say this one, the king of spades, almighty king.
17:42 You in-jog it, and you're gonna do two things,
17:46 one after the other.
17:48 You're gonna pop the card, and right after that,
17:52 you're gonna place your thumb on the five,
17:54 press, and just lift it up, that's all.
17:57 Just catch it in between the fives.
18:03 The king of spades.
18:06 (upbeat music)
18:17 Another way you can go with the pop fly
18:19 is to produce two cards instead of just one.
18:22 So you have two selections, looked at and remembered,
18:26 and then you in-jog them using your favorite method.
18:29 Now, when producing two cards,
18:32 you need to have two things in mind.
18:33 The first one is that you need a big bunch of cards
18:36 in between the first card and the second one
18:39 so that you can produce the second card
18:41 after the first card without any trouble.
18:47 The second thing you have to keep in mind
18:49 is that the in-jog of the first card,
18:52 the one closest to the bottom,
18:54 needs to be bigger than the one closest to the top.
18:58 As you can see, this in-jog is bigger than the second one.
19:03 Thus, my pinky has freedom to pop the card
19:07 without disturbing the first card.
19:09 Okay, so let's do this at normal speed.
19:14 So you pop the first one, and then the second one,
19:17 right close to each other.
19:22 There's selections, in this case, a 10 and a six.
19:25 They can take the cards and look at them.
19:28 Don't worry about the deck.
19:32 It's gonna be messy.
19:34 You can't control it all of the time.
19:36 Don't worry.
19:37 Another interesting sandwich you can do using the pop fly.
19:42 Let's take out the two black threes from the deck
19:46 and place them on the table.
19:50 And you're gonna break the deck into halves.
19:55 And from the half on the left,
19:58 you're gonna have a spectator just touch a card.
20:01 I'm sorry.
20:03 Let's say they touch this one.
20:04 You take it out and get a pinky break beneath the top card
20:09 and perform a double, show them, in this case, the five.
20:13 Take the top card, which is a different card,
20:18 and place it out jogged.
20:19 You can either place it out jogged
20:22 or just square it in the middle.
20:23 It's up to you.
20:24 I'm gonna leave it out jogged.
20:26 Then you take the threes and you explain
20:30 that the two threes are going to attract your selection
20:34 in this packet.
20:36 While you talk, we're gonna place the first three on top
20:39 and the second one right beneath their selection.
20:43 Square everything up and then bury the two threes
20:47 somewhere in the middle of the deck.
20:49 Now I'm going to square up their selection
20:54 and you can either shuffle the deck.
20:58 You can give them to shuffle.
21:00 Doesn't matter.
21:01 Okay?
21:04 After they've shuffled or you've shuffled,
21:07 you tell them that their card is somewhere in the deck
21:10 and while you tell them this,
21:13 you close the spread at a point somewhere in the middle
21:19 and you get a pinky break and pull that indifferent card
21:23 and prepare to do the pop fly.
21:25 You're gonna pop this card somewhere.
21:29 You're gonna make it pop from here
21:31 and go directly in this packet
21:34 while you dribble it on the table.
21:37 This will give the illusion that their selection
21:39 popped right in between the two threes.
21:41 Watch.
21:43 I'm gonna do it.
21:44 Just like that.
21:47 Doesn't matter if it doesn't square.
21:50 You're gonna square it up immediately
21:53 and then spread the cards on the table,
21:55 showing that one card is in between the two threes
22:01 and that will be their selection,
22:05 the five of clubs in this case.
22:08 (upbeat music)
22:12 This is a cool production I like
22:22 to call Quattro Trigioni
22:25 because I use the four threes
22:27 but you can use any four of a kind.
22:30 I'm gonna take the four threes out of the deck
22:32 and for the purpose of the explanation,
22:37 I'm gonna leave them face up
22:40 so you can see at all times where their position is.
22:45 We're gonna start at the top of the deck.
22:48 It's like this.
22:49 You're gonna get a break beneath the top three
22:55 as you can see.
22:58 Cut the deck from the bottom
23:00 and cut it again
23:05 so that the three is on the bottom of the left packet.
23:08 Now you shuffle them,
23:10 maintaining the bottom three and the top three,
23:14 just like this.
23:15 So you have one three on the bottom now
23:17 and the rest on top.
23:18 From this point on, while you pattern,
23:22 for example, if you have the four aces,
23:23 you could ask them,
23:25 what is the most powerful suit in the entire deck?
23:29 And while you ask them and they answer,
23:31 you slip cut the top card
23:36 and you end jog it, just like this.
23:39 Put the rest of the deck on top.
23:41 This is concealed by the right hand.
23:44 The end jog is concealed by the right hand.
23:47 Be careful with your angles.
23:48 You can do this while you talk to them
23:50 and look them into their eyes.
23:53 Okay, now for the last three.
23:55 Not actually the last.
23:58 This is just the last one
23:59 that you're gonna place somewhere in the deck.
24:02 You're gonna slip cut it
24:04 at the position somewhere in the deck.
24:07 I'm gonna explain it right now, so watch.
24:09 Slip cut it so that there is
24:15 almost a big number of cards
24:19 between the first three and the end jogged three.
24:23 As you can see, like 15, 20 cards maybe.
24:27 That's perfect.
24:29 So you're in this position now.
24:31 One three on top.
24:33 Keep a break above the three of just slip cut.
24:38 So it's like one three on top,
24:40 one three in the middle,
24:41 one three end jogged,
24:43 and one three on the bottom.
24:45 The last thing you're gonna do
24:47 is get a break by riffling the last card.
24:51 Wait, sorry.
24:53 You're gonna riffle the last card
24:55 and get a break above it with your thumb.
24:58 Just like this.
24:59 Everything is done in a smooth action
25:04 while talking, so no worries.
25:07 From this point on,
25:08 the very first production is done like this.
25:12 That's an easy production.
25:16 You have the three.
25:17 This is in slow-mo.
25:20 You slip, just like a slip cut.
25:24 So you like take the three.
25:25 Sorry, I'm taking two cards here.
25:27 So you take the three,
25:29 and then you just throw it out, just like this.
25:32 Easy action.
25:35 Doesn't need a lot of practice.
25:36 Just get used to it.
25:38 It's like slip cut and then throw it.
25:41 You place this deck
25:44 on your left side.
25:46 And now what you're going to do
25:48 is you're gonna slap this packet on this packet,
25:53 and you're gonna release the three,
25:56 and it's gonna pop.
25:57 Let me show you one more time.
26:00 So you're gonna slap it.
26:02 As you slap, as you go down with the deck,
26:05 you're gonna release it,
26:07 and the three's gonna pop out of the deck.
26:09 It's very simple.
26:11 Just do the action a couple of times.
26:13 You're gonna get used to it.
26:15 From this point, you riffle a couple of cards,
26:18 like three or four maybe,
26:19 so that it gets this impression
26:24 that the three popped out of the middle.
26:27 And you come angle-wise,
26:30 keep your hand always so that the three,
26:35 the three that is in-jogged,
26:37 is kept away from the spectator's view.
26:41 So you keep your three fingers always at an angle-jog.
26:45 So not like this, not perpendicular,
26:47 because they're gonna see it.
26:49 Angle-wise, just like this.
26:52 Okay?
26:53 Now you come to the right,
26:57 and you prepare to do the top fly, the pop fly.
27:00 Just do the pop fly.
27:03 Dribble the cards, and the very last card,
27:07 keep it into your hand,
27:09 and then just, remember this is gonna be face-down,
27:13 so it's gonna look something like this.
27:15 Okay, that's the most simple action.
27:21 You're gonna pop that, leave it there.
27:23 This card is going to be face-down,
27:25 so you're gonna turn that face-up.
27:28 Okay, so you have your four threes on top of the deck.
27:33 You're gonna get a thumb break beneath the top three,
27:38 and you're gonna cut it to the bottom of the deck,
27:42 maintaining the rest of the threes on top.
27:44 So you have a three on the bottom.
27:47 Then we're gonna slip cut the next three,
27:51 and leave it end-jogged
27:53 somewhere towards the bottom of the deck.
27:56 Slip cut the next three somewhere towards the top,
27:59 and get a thumb break above it.
28:05 And now, get a thumb break above the bottom card.
28:09 And do the productions in order,
28:11 the first one, first one like this.
28:14 You pop the second one, you perform the pop fly.
28:16 Turn first three, second, third, and fourth.
28:23 (upbeat music)
28:28 (upbeat music)
28:31 Let's say you don't have a table,
28:37 so you wanna perform the pop fly with your standing up.
28:41 No problem if you have a spectator,
28:43 which of course you have.
28:45 You have them cup their hands like this,
28:47 like that, don't show any peace sign, okay, perfect.
28:51 So just like a butterfly.
28:53 Actually not like a butterfly.
28:54 So perfect, you have them cup like that, perfect.
28:58 Now, depending on how far you wanna shoot the card,
29:01 so let's say not for approximately here is perfect.
29:04 You're gonna have to angle it so that they don't see.
29:09 So they're gonna be somewhere in front here,
29:12 and you're gonna grab their hands and put it here.
29:15 So imagine that the spectator is there,
29:18 and their hands are here, where these hands are.
29:21 So they're not gonna see the end-jog, don't worry.
29:24 You're gonna place your hand,
29:26 and you're gonna do the dribble, just like you would
29:28 on a table, but in your hand, okay?
29:31 And then do the pop fly.
29:32 And it's gonna fly directly into their hand,
29:36 and they can immediately turn it over
29:40 and see that it's their selection.
29:42 (upbeat music)
29:54 Okay, so let's say you wanna perform the pop fly
29:56 standing up, but you don't like the cupping thing.
30:00 So you can do it another way.
30:03 You have a card selected using any method you prefer.
30:07 Say the 10 in this case.
30:09 You get a pinky break above it, and you end-jog it
30:12 using the first method I showed you,
30:15 where you pull it, your pinky finger,
30:17 and then you square it immediately.
30:19 Do this under the motion of squaring the deck,
30:24 then you get your end-jog.
30:25 Just like that, sorry, kinda small.
30:29 Just like that.
30:30 Now to perform the pop, you're gonna apply pressure
30:34 with your pinky finger on the right side of the card,
30:37 and then release, and the card is gonna fly in the air
30:41 into the right hand.
30:43 Before you do the pop, you have to keep in mind
30:45 a couple of things.
30:46 The first thing is that your thumb and your second finger
30:50 is gonna keep the top half in place.
30:53 As you can see, when you pop it,
30:55 the top half is gonna go up,
30:57 so your thumb and second finger
30:58 is gonna keep that half in place.
31:01 Another thing, your third finger is gonna go
31:04 either under the deck or under the card.
31:07 Same thing, just place it somewhere
31:10 so that it doesn't go in contact with the selection.
31:14 So keeping that in mind,
31:15 you push, snap, or whatever,
31:20 and you make the card pop.
31:21 Let's do that one more time.
31:23 Have your selection, create the in-jog,
31:28 and then you pop it in the air into the right hand.
31:33 Just like that.
31:36 That's another way of doing the pop fly.
31:38 Hope you like it.
31:50 Hi guys, some final thoughts regarding the move.
31:53 First of all, don't be afraid to bend
31:56 the corner of the card.
31:57 You can just unbend it afterwards, so no worries.
32:01 Another thing to keep in mind,
32:03 you can use any kind of decks,
32:05 brand new or really used decks,
32:08 it doesn't really matter.
32:08 The move works with any kind.
32:11 Just play around with the pressure.
32:14 Another thing, after you've mastered the move itself,
32:17 play around with how far you throw the card.
32:21 Seriously, just think about it.
32:22 You can throw it anywhere.
32:24 Throw it really close and really far away.
32:28 Just play around with it.
32:30 And just like I said before,
32:32 don't be limited by what we've shown you thus far.
32:35 You can go a lot of ways with this.
32:37 We were jamming about this,
32:38 and we talked about the lapping technique.
32:41 Also, you could stack the deck,
32:43 and the spectator could peek at any card
32:46 or name any card,
32:47 and you just pull it out of the dribble.
32:51 It could go a lot of ways.
32:52 Also, if you wanna show me some ideas,
32:55 or if you wanna ask me anything regarding the moves,
32:58 just, you can find me online,
33:00 track me down, email me.
33:02 Any kind, I'll be glad to help you, seriously,
33:05 with anything.
33:07 Once again, guys, thank you very much,
33:10 and I'll see you next time.
33:12 you
