00:00 In Kilkenny, which likes to call itself the Marble City, all is not as it seems.
00:08 For the city's been putting on a false front, especially for the making of a
00:13 film which is set in the London of the 18th century. Whole streets have been
00:18 transformed and already old buildings have been made still more ancient as
00:22 Kilkenny throws itself wholeheartedly into the business of making an epic. For
00:27 the film Lock Up Your Daughters has been shot entirely on location here and it's
00:32 costing 1 million pounds. Optimistic local businessmen are gleefully
00:37 calculating that anything up to 200,000 pounds will be left behind in their
00:41 shops and pubs when the film makers leave. With all that money floating
00:46 around most of the people here have turned a deaf ear to rumors that this
00:50 picture is going to be a sort of unexpurgated version of Tom Jones. There have been
01:00 reports of wild orgies in some of the bedroom scenes and while the film
01:04 company hasn't admitted that they're true it hasn't denied them either for a
01:08 soupçon of sex is good box office. The producer David Deutsch put it like this
01:13 I'd say it's lively more than sexy. What about all the rumors though? Well the
01:18 rumors about the hundred and fifty prostitutes from Limerick. Are there 150
01:22 prostitutes in Limerick? Limerick would be very ashamed if it was true but this is
01:27 not true then in fact. No I only wish it was true. How about the scene of the
01:31 naked girl running down the street? Well it's not in the script so I don't
01:34 suppose we'll shoot it. The press handouts issued by Domino
01:37 Productions speak of a bawdy boisterous restoration comedy based largely on
01:43 Hogarth and some of the characters fit into that famous illustrators
01:46 uncomplimentary view of his fellow citizens.
01:51 Do it up. Yes. It's tight enough. For Elaine Taylor who's one of the 15 big
01:59 names in the picture the job of getting in and out of her period costume each
02:03 day can be a bit breathtaking.
02:12 Blood rushed to my eyes. They're about halfway through the shooting now and Kilkenny is
02:17 getting adjusted to what's going on. For the unsophisticated citizen to whom a
02:22 nightclub is something a policeman hits you with when the pubs close it's all a
02:26 bit mystifying but the law is on hand to make sure that the innate purity of the
02:31 Irish isn't sullied. The town clerk Peter Farrelly is one of the local officials
02:36 who's been drawn into the somewhat unworldly atmosphere of picture making.
02:40 Well now I've seen a lot of shots of this film I've seen rushes of it I see
02:44 nothing that anybody could be ashamed of. I'm certainly not ashamed of having this
02:48 film in the city in fact I'm very proud it's been made here. There's nothing bawdy
02:52 about it. The extras blend into the surroundings of Kilkenny in an uncanny
02:56 manner. The city was picked as the location for the picture because of its
03:00 resemblance to the London of two centuries ago. A slur which Kilkenny has
03:05 managed to overlook and the character seemed to be almost a natural part of
03:09 the scene. It's uncharitable but probably true to say that some of them wouldn't
03:13 look a great deal different in their ordinary everyday clothes.
03:18 Thank you.
