00:13 I want to share something from "Finding Joe" with you guys.
00:17 This question gets asked quite a bit,
00:18 like what happened to all those interviews
00:22 and what happened to all that footage?
00:23 So I'll start dripping some of that out now
00:25 and I'll start with this one piece
00:28 that was in the movie originally, but we cut it.
00:32 If you saw the movie, right, you know we used the kids
00:34 throughout the whole film
00:35 and that wasn't really planned that way.
00:38 So there was a point in shooting, we were about a year in
00:42 and the film at that point was horrible.
00:45 It sucked, it was just unwatchable
00:47 and it was really a hard, difficult time
00:50 'cause a year later I had spent thousands of dollars.
00:54 It was my own money and mortgaged the house to do it.
00:57 I put my family in financial jeopardy
01:00 and I didn't really have much to show for it.
01:03 But I did know that we were gonna use these kids
01:07 to act out certain stories.
01:09 So I knew people were gonna tell stories
01:11 and then we would use the kids for those stories.
01:13 So that's really all I had.
01:15 So I went and shot this test, which you're about to see
01:18 and we cut it together and that's when we went,
01:22 oh my God, and it was just a magical moment.
01:25 So I want to share that with you.
01:27 So what you're about to watch is Gay Hendricks
01:30 telling the story about building a cathedral.
01:34 There's a traveler on horseback
01:44 and he's riding along the road
01:46 and he comes to a point where he sees some men working.
01:56 And what men are doing are carrying boulders
02:01 from down near the river
02:02 and carrying up a long hill to the top of the hill.
02:05 And so he watches this for a while
02:08 and he sees some men,
02:11 kind of upset every step of the way.
02:16 This thing's so heavy and that kind of thing.
02:26 And he saw some of the others, happy, singing.
02:30 Looked like they had joy on their faces.
02:39 And so he stopped one of the guys that was suffering
02:42 and he said, "What are you doing?"
02:43 And the guy said, "Can't you see?
02:52 "I'm carrying rocks up a hill."
02:54 (gentle music)
02:56 And so he stopped one of the other fellows
03:03 that had a smile on his face and said, "What are you doing?"
03:06 And he said, "I'm building a cathedral
03:18 "that's going to be up on that hill someday."
03:21 (gentle music)
03:24 And so that sense of having a life purpose
03:29 that not only resonates with yourself inside,
03:33 but also makes a contribution to the world around you.
03:36 That's such a crucial thing.
03:49 Yeah, yeah, that story gets me every time.
03:52 I love Gay Hendricks and it's really interesting to me
03:55 that this story was kind of the lightning bolt moment
03:59 and it didn't make it in the film.
04:01 And the reason it didn't make the cut
04:03 is because it just didn't fit.
04:05 Like we had it in this chapter and that chapter
04:08 and every time we watched it, although we love the story,
04:11 it just didn't gel.
04:12 So it had to go and it was really difficult.
04:14 There's a lot of moments like that,
04:15 which I'll share in the future.
