00:00 The island was our own little world.
00:04 Come on.
00:06 Sapelo Island, seven miles off the coast of Georgia.
00:11 Cornelia Walker Bailey's family has lived here for nine generations.
00:16 Our community was never integrated.
00:19 We wanted the culture and other stuff to stay intact.
00:22 We pretty much self-governed,
00:26 and that would be the simplest way to put it.
00:30 Amid the saltwater marshes and tall oak trees,
00:33 her boys hunt, fish, and explore the island.
00:36 I told her, "Good Lord, all I want to do is see that them three boys finish high school
00:52 and start doing something for themselves."
00:54 But will they want to stay?
00:57 Not only do I love the boys, but they're the next generation.
01:03 So they're it.
01:05 The selfish part of me wants them to stay because I want them to help keep my community going.
01:12 We're so bored on the island sometimes.
01:14 It gets very boring when no one wants to play with me.
01:18 We started planting some red peas.
01:22 I built my own little garden.
